Why Are You Still Bowling

I know I haven't been bowling as allot of people on this forum but I think I have reached the end.  It was great but getting tired of the sport because its becoming more of a job than fun.  I have achieved all that I think I really can and thats not saying to much but it was fun just getting tired of the pressure to always having great games and then looked at crazy or being called a sand bagger..  

Why do most of you still bowl?

I still bowl because it's fun for me.  Though it is fun for me, it also feeds my highly competitive side(side pots, regionals, etc).  I still bowl because there is something(no matter how small) I learn each and every week.

I don't hate the guy(s) .. but I don't feel I have to support them. My feeling is if there are 10 brackets .. no-one should be able to enter more then 5 .. being good at a sport and getting better is fantastic .. if you are better then anyone you bowl with .. it's time to MOVE ON! I thought leagues were for FUN bowling .. thought the PRO's were for making money .. guess I'm under a misconception .. sorry!

Kind of like what Kevin Costner and the Ray Liotta characters said in "Field of Dreams." Every time that ball rolls off the ends of my fingertips, my elbow is in, my arm is straight and relaxed, my head is still and my eyes are on target, watching that ball roll right over it, take the path I imagined for it, pick up great revs, pound the pocket, and blow the whole rack in the pit--that's when I know why I bowl. Nothing more, nothing less.

i too ask myself this all the time. In fact every year i say this was it. I always wind up back and usually hate myself for it,because i just dont seem to be getting it.
   When I started it was with friends,the friends i started with are all well beyond me in average and ability. I am still stuck in the lucky night once and awhile mode. Now i usually go to a league and find a team with a spot and fill in but the friends hanging out is basically gone. The thrill of the lucky night is still nice and the occasional pot win is great,but i guess the reason i still bowl is that when i am not bowling i am lost. I miss it too much to let it go. The sounds ,the feeling of going for the big game and my incessant need to belong.
    I will probably never bowl 800,or average over 205,but i cant say honestly that i can just give my equipment away and never bowl again. Acctually the thought of not bowling is frightening cause its really all i have left.
     Bad knees, bad back,wrist and elbow. Most days now i cant even get my fingers in the ball,but for the notion that the next time i bowl i might shoot 300 or someone might hand me the money from the pot,i might even shoot a turkey in the 10th for the win on a 160 game. Might pick up the greek church or the 67 10. The feeling of the ball coming off your hand on what you know is a perfect shot. And for me the dream of one day being a killer,or having someone come up to me and say i remember when you told me... and it still works.
    I still bowl because i love it. Its my crack and i haven't found anything to replace it. if i could bowl 7 days i would. So anybody know a good drill for the mutant or a new surface prep for my fast to make it less flippy on dry but less skiddy in oil hit me back when i get back from bowling.

It's an addiction, much like gambling.

Despite having no talent and no skill, I bowl just well enough just often enough to keep me coming back for more reward and continued punishment.

With a 186 average, 279 high game and a 761 high series I have plenty of room for improvement particularly with converting spares.

So long as I continue to improve I'll continue to play.

This yr, i kinda was in the same boat, i was like well maybe i can just sub, and then i show up and have no team ! opps talk about bad karma, well ends up i get on a team, and the itch is still there.  I guess its because it's not just a throw 15 to 10 and watch the strikes.. Its a second shift league after a ladies league, so the lanes are always different.  

Plus its man to man points play, and I hate to lose my point!!!  I'm averaging about 205, but i work for it every nite.  Plus while my other team mates are not nearly as good, its a fun time...

I don't get in any pots or brackets anymore simply because I'm tired of hearing the complaining about being a higher average bowler winning "their" (less skilled player) money.

This is my last year of public center league bowling. It's useless and a waste of time and money. It's not enjoyable to be good at something and have everybody against you. Standing on the big dot, throwing it over the 2nd arrow for a repetitious 36 weeks is a boring waste of time. The league suckers can have their repetitive boring game.

Obviously you must be the best bowler on the planet and anyone that bowls  you is either a sucker or is against you. Since bowling leagues is so boring why not put a few lanes in your house, don't invite anyone to compete against, and tell yourself how great you are. Nice attitude about other bowlers and their abilities. Find a scratch league or try the regionals-then assess where your game is at.
