why do the pros throw so many revs....
« on: October 28, 2003, 05:01:10 AM »
well this might sound like a stupid question, but here is my point.  i thorw with a good fair amount of "hand" and my ball carries and hits exceptionally.  i throw a good shot i get ten.  thats it.  i don't have the revs they do though.  wouldn't lowering there revs help to increase there consistency, witch i understand is already phenomenal.  i guess i figure if you throw a good shot you don't need all the power in the world, and if you throw a bad shot all the power in the world is not going to keep you outta trouble.

sawbones --  Quote: "Some of it is a natural ability and some of it is learning how to stay under and behind the ball with the fingers left in the ball a second or two after the thumb comes out."

Let's see, it takes the ball about 3 seconds to get to the pins, so this bowler should be coming in to see you for a fingertip transplant!!  LMAO

Seriously, to respond to the original question, they throw that way because they can do so AND STILL BE ACCURATE.  That's why they're pros, they can do things the rest of us can't.  --  JohnP

I think the real question should be.

What are the common characteristics of the great bowlers vs the rest.

High or low revs is not it!
Because there are greats at both extremes.
Ernie Schlegal(low) and Robert Smith (high).

The common traits of the best the 230 league averages and up and the pros.
1.  Ball within two inches of ankle at release on many throws and great balance at the line.(caused by ball within 2 inches of ankle).
2. Good and consistent timing.
3. Good release, thumb out cleanly with a lot of time before finger release.
4. Level landing on lane most throws.
5. Great Sparemaking
6. Great mental strength.

Both the pros and the 230 and up league bowlers have 1-4.
Then the best pros have a ton of 6 and 5 in that order!

From what I have seen, WRW puts a decent amount of revs on the ball when he wants to. I think that a lot of people have the mistaken idea that WRW doesn't have hand, and this is just plain silly. I am aware that this so-called "fact" is often repeated by people like Jowdy, but from what I have seen, WRW is pretty solidly in the middle of the pack as far as revs go.

Average Revs... great accuracy... great versatility... increadible mental game... World Champion

Actually, WRW has LOADS of revs.  It is just that his revs are more forward, end over end, so they do need seem as impressive.  Watch his speed.  He has to keep it up because of his forward roll and the number of revs he throws.  He ain't average for the pros -- he throws more, it's justa different roll leading to a straighter shot and more accurate.
