Title: Why do you bowl, and what does it mean to you?
Post by: HamPster on May 27, 2003, 09:49:41 AM
That pretty much says it all.  I took it up after I graduated high school, and found I was actually good at it.  I have very few friends, and I really enjoy it.  I bowl because of those reasons, and what it means to me is that I can finally enjoy doing something I'm good at without people making fun of me, and being at a place where I'm respected instead of ignored.  Anyone?

I got interested because of the noise.  My mother was at a bowling center the night before I was born, so I think the sounds of the bowling balls hitting the pins must have stuck in my memory.

Anyways, my father and uncle were always bowling so I got interested in it and I found out that I had a bit of talent for the sport.  Never had any talent for any other sport, so my Saturday mornings were spent at the local bowling center, then later in the day we would watch the pros bowling on TV.

Lol, I didn't recognize you for a moment there, Kristi!  But the KB and then of course your new high series kinda clued me in once I paid some attention!  Yeah, it's mental.  LOL, you wanna know what's really sad though?  I'm so used to watching Ron and all the rest of the guys on Tuesday nights, that I'll get up to the line, and I'll catch somebody throwing a shot in my peripheral vision and pay more attention to them than my own shot.  Of course I'll screw up, but the habit of watching is getting me into trouble!

I like to watch the pinsetter go up and down.

Hypnotic isn't it?

The majority of people I've met in league are either weird funny, satirically funny or just flat out humorously funny. I like that big variety of funny.

Plus it's a fairly cheap boys not out night to have fun and have some competition where alot of the people actually have the chance to win the league.

With as many times as I have moved in my life it has always been a good way to meet new people with a similar interest(s) fairly quickly after moving.

But most importantly alot of the people I have met are just some of the nicest people you could ever meet like Sawbones, Hose, Everclear, Mike DeSantis, Strider, Pchee2, Toma, BrianN, Thong Princess, Sr. Kegler, PPig, Turd, Coach Jim, Ric Wunder, Magic Carpet. If i left off anyone I met in NC I appologize for having a bad memory.

I started because of a coupon for cheap bowling and my friends and I were bored.  I stayed because I vowed to learn something new each year, and bowling seemed reasonable (was I deluded).  I continue because it's fun to see what you can do that you couldn't do before, the competition is fun enough, nice people, warm in the winter, cooler in the summer, and I've spent too much money on balls to quit now...

I bowl because I love the challenge of kicking someones' butt in league.  I bowl because I know I can improve to the level I want, all it takes is effort and time.  I bowl because I enjoy having a couple beers with my friends after league.  I bowl because of the complexity of selecting the right equipment and understanding the mechanics of the game.  I bowl because it's FUN!  When it isn't fun anymore then you know it is time to quit.

I had bowled when I was a 13 year old but it was a week end thing with my friends. At that time I was involved in a lot of sports. After I was married there was work/work and more work. My wife's Uncle asked me to sub one night even though I hadn't bowled for years. In a couple of weeks I was a permanent .. and I've been bowling ever since.

Love the people and the challenge. Never thought of going further then a league. Love tournaments and bowl as many as I can but always respected the other guys ability. The last few years I found that a GOOD bowling ball HELPS .. I now have more bowling balls then the local pro shop .. My average has improved .. but not to the point that I would take on some of the BBR group .. I never knew and don't EXPECT to know what some of the young bowlers that write here DO KNOW!I give them a LOT OF CREDIT!

As a teenager I bowled because it was something I was good at. In my thirties I bowled because it was relaxing and helped take my mind off work. Now in my fourties I bowl because I enjoy the learning experience.

I had always wanted to join a league and when I blew my knee out playing basketball I needed a sport that didnt require as much jumping/running. Dont get me wrong, bowling is still strenuous on my knees just not as much as basketball was. In any case, a friend asked me to join his Friday night fun league. I had lots of fun and since then have improved and taken the game much more seriously. I continue to do it because it is fun and challenging, plus I enjoy the people I bowl with.

Why do I bowl?
I bowl because I enjoy it, I'm reasonably good at it, and I like most of hte people I bowl with!
If it's not fun, I'm not gonna do it. I quit for 11 years when my kids were little. I never missed it. Once I started back up (1995), I never thought about quitting again.

Lol, I'm a RABID perfectionist, which I suppose I get from my mom, when it comes to sports.  I mean, how hard is it when the ball is a foot wide to get it close enough to the pocket to score with?  Yeah, I'm probably too hard on myself, but you ought to see me when I'm practicing.  I tone it down on league nights cause I don't want to look like too much of an idiot, but if you see me going off, you can pretty much bet it was my fault instead of bad ball reaction or carry.  I wish I could stay calmer like you, and focus better.

I started bowling because it was a family thing to do from age 4.  Bowled in match point leagues in my 20's for the money and the competition.  Got married and went from 40+ games a week to 3.  Hated it and not having fun at all.  So I wanted to retire from bowling.  I still had the drive but the sharpness was gone and had very little time.  I quit for about a year and went back to school to finish 2 college degrees and I had the itch.  My father retired bought a Pro Shop and started bowling SASBA.  He approached my wife about creating a Slide Sock for approaches.(She came from a bowling family also)  Boom she needed testers and to keep from looking silly I started bowling more.  Her business has been nutz with new products and patents coming about. It's grown all over the country. I'm not at the level I would like to be yet but I'm working on it. It's still a challenge!

Why do I bowl?  To get out of the house one night a week.

What does it mean to me?  It means I don't have to change my daughter's diapers that night.
