Looking for a good dry lane ball.
« on: May 13, 2006, 04:03:05 PM »
What is the best dry lane ball?
I am looking for balls with cores, not three piece spare balls.
I am looking for balls with long arcing cores and non aggressive reactive resin coverstocks.

Lane #1 Bullet or XXXL (XXXL has plastic coverstock, but a really powerful core)
Roto-Grip Mercury or Saturn (Pearl or Solid)
Brunswick Power Groove Dry/R
Storm Big Hit or Tropical Storm

It always amazes me, the answers I read to this question.  When a weight block (which there is only one ball that has one) is in a ball, it gives the ball power/energy, which creates flare and drive, not to mention the hitting power.  This brings me to the conclusion that Lane 1s XXXL is THE BEST by far; regardless of whether you love or hate them, they HAVE the best dry lane ball on the market.  This ball is 2 balls in one, as it skids/slides in oil for spares, and when it is dry, will not over hook due to the polyester/plastic cover.  People go out and spend 50 bucks on a spare ball, and later buy a different one, and by the time it is over, they could have just spent the 120.00 for a XXXL.  CI, do yourself a favor and splurge for the XXXL, and I guarantee that you will not be disappointed, if you are, I will be surprised.

Geez, man.  There are so many out there to choose from.

Brunswick - Power Grooves, Reactive or Dry/R
Columbia  - Scout Reactives (One of my faves)
Ebonite   - Tornados
Storm     - Big Hit is okay, Tropical Storm
Track     - Dry Heat, Desert Heat (Most dynamic and expensive of the bunch)
Visionary - Slate Blue Gargoyle  (Most underrated of all of them)  Urethane cover with a solid core.  Advertised as a urethane ball with the hit and performance of a reactive.

Of all these, the Power Groove Reactive is probably the smoothest rolling of the bunch.  The Tornado and the Tropical Storm probably have the most backend of the bunch.  Good luck with whichever one you choose.  Hope everything works out for you.

My personal vote goes to the Slate Blue Gargoyle. I haven't played one, but it would be my first choice. Luckily, I got my hand s on one of the last Black Pure Hammers in this country, also an option. The Dry/R is also a very good dry lane ball. Underrated, too, since it is "only" a Power Groove - but anything you might need or ask for on burned surfaces.

I have also seen and tested an XXXL (a friend got one), and it did not impress me much. Sure, it moves due to the core, but the polyester coverstock does not keep the pins as low as a urethane or reactive shell. Ugly spares are a frequent risk. You get IMHO the same splashing erratic carry as with a 3-piece polyester, just paired with a hook and end roll.
But if you are playing on total toast, it surely is a ball to consider since it is the ball with the weakest shell AND a coverstock around.

I really like my Vibe on dry lanes. It has a core with a similar shape to the Vicious Strike of a few years ago.  It was real strong when I first got it, but after about 9 games it's become what I bought it for.  I very good drier lane ball.

Desert Heat by Track. A little more expensive but it hits harder then most of the others mentioned thus far. The XXXL a friend of mine has and it seems to be a nice ball too but he doesn't use his thumb so it's hard to tell, and the Visionary Slate Blue Gargoyle also looks good but I haven't used one. I use the Desert Heat and I'm constantly surprised how hard that ball hits the pocket.

I only have experience with Lane #1....

If you want a reactive for dry, nut no toast (still a hint of oil left in the heads), go with the Bullet. I shot a 288 with this sweetie in a tourney a few weeks back. Nobody could keep their normal stuff on the right side of the headpin. I was able to play the Bullet right up the track (2nd arrow) and was absolutely loving the fact that I had a trick in my bag that nobody else had.

If you have complete toast, a reactive will hook right off your hand. Go with the XXXL. I have only had one chance to use this ball effectively as a strike ball. Only once have I actually thrown on extreme toast. I mostly use it as a spare ball.

I prefer to use a good medium oil ball with a 5+ inch pin, a weak drilling, and also alot of polish. Most dry lane balls I have seen or thrown I think are a joke but, I will say the Mercury looks good on my buddy.

Hit, Big Hit or Tropical Storm

I have experience with these and for my style they are exactly what I look for in dryer equipment

The ulra sonic seems to be a good one to me...
drilled 5x2 or so.... not polished up yet but it does not seem too overly reactive

i know they dont have cores but check out old uretethane faball hammers.  the pink one is great on dry.  they all arc very evenly and you wont loose hitting power at all.  plus they have really hard covers that will last a long time.
