Better strategy for "get a ball" league?
« on: April 30, 2017, 01:10:59 AM »
The alley on the navy base I'm stationed at is having a summer "get a ball" league. I don't have a huge amount of details, i.e. No clue on jackpots or prize money, but stated so far is the weekly price can range from $11-$20 depending on the ball you want.

I do have a need for a weaker piece but at the same time, I'm wondering if it would be better just to pay out of pocket for a weaker ball and pay the full $20 a week and get something top of the line. Or just lower my weekly fee and get a weaker ball from the league.

I'm curious to hear suggestions of what you guys would do.

You could subtract the lineage fee from what you are paying weekly and then multiply by the number of weeks the league will play to figure out what you are paying for the ball through the league.  Then go to your local pro shop and price the ball you wanted, to see which way is cheaper for you.  Does the ball you get from the league include the drilling cost?  If not, you would have to add that into the equation.

Most have-a-ball leagues I've ever supplied balls for are priced cheaper to the bowling center for the league than you are going to be able to do on your own.  This may not be the case if you are buying through a shop on base, but if it is try to do both through the league if you don't mind waiting.

The ball league I help supply balls for does save the bowler money vs. paying retail for the ball.  We also include the majority of drilling costs (the bowler pays for inserts if needed).  Ours requires cooperation from the house and pro shop owner, but it has worked well for many years.

Another suggestion is that if you want to bowl the league anyways,  Is if you have a friend/teammate who wants a new ball but may not be able to afford the High End price, to have them buy you the weaker ball, and you give them the High End Ball you get from the league.

I think he mentioned that it would cost him more per week to get a high end ball.

I know he inferred that, but depending on some people schedule, maybe the have a ball league is the only league they are able to bowl.

It happened to me quite a few years back.  I was working multiple jobs, and a have a ball league was the only one that I could fit in the schedule.  I personally have no use for the high end equipment, so I offered someone I knew who really needed a new ball the deal.  The extra 30 dollars or so that i paid didn't bother me, I just wanted to bowl something to get my practice in, and keep timing.  The other bowler got a ball he wanted/needed, and it saved him 40 or so dollars.

The pay it forward mentality.

Another suggestion is that if you want to bowl the league anyways,  Is if you have a friend/teammate who wants a new ball but may not be able to afford the High End price, to have them buy you the weaker ball, and you give them the High End Ball you get from the league.

I bowled one of these leagues before. I did it to get my boy a ball, movie character ball and marvel ball?? I don't remember. Anyway, why not have fun bowling then get a ball for my kid.

If had no choice but to bowl a league like this, whatever ball they gave at the end, I would def. sell that ball and use that money on something else or add to another NIB that I actually wanted.
