One Finger Lift!!
« on: August 17, 2006, 02:21:08 AM »
Over the yrs i've always felt that i havent been getting the full lift off two fingers the reason i say this is that my middle finger is 1/2in longer than my ring finger. Now my drillers say we measure it the way we should and it should be ok,but if i hold the ball and roll it off my hand slowly it certainly looks like my ring finger comes out first and my index finger still has a 1/4 inch to go so i think i am only getting lift off one finger. I dont know if anyone else thinks they have this problem. I have seen balls drilled with one fingerhole above the other but never thought of asking them why.Might be me being a bit stupid but the thought is always there. Can anyone give me any ideas on this, any advice will be appreciated. Thank guys.

To get a proper lift, IMHO rather the ring finger should have more lift when exiting a ball. Middle finger lift rises the track and leads to inconsitent reactions and weak carry.

This can be a drilling problem, when the span and/or pitch is not right, but also a user problem. Did you try a "ring finger lead" release (or do it)? Try to "chase" the ball when you release it with your ring finger throughout the follow-through. Tucking your pinky finger might also help a little, but this is IMHO not a long-term solution since not everyone has a hardened body for this.

If this all does not help, I'd consult a third party driller to check your hand and balls.

Most people middle finger is longer than their ring!

But the standard set by the hand fit guru is that when CUPPED on the ball!

If the middle finger is 5/16 longer than ring (again when cupped on ball) then the spans are the same.

Another way to do it is just put hand on ball stretch out over your finger holes and see how far joint is over lip of finger hole.  Many drillers say joint past the lip 5/16 of an inch is just perfect.

A little insight on to why the ring finger can be 5/16 of an inch shorter in a cupped position than the middle and spans end up the same...remember your thumb is offset in relation to your ring finger! (ie you are not a chicken with a thumb dead in between your ring and middle).

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS my middle finger straight up hand held in front of my face is at least 1/2 inch longer than my ring BUT when I cup on ball the ring finger is only 3/16 of an inch shorter than middle.

Thus I use a ring finger span 1/8 longer than middle.
Table is thus.
Cupped on ball
ring shorter than middle 3/8 middle finger longer by 1/16 of an inch
ring shorter than middle 5/16 spans are equal
ring shorter than middle 1/4 ring finger 1/16 longer
ring shorter than middle 3/16 ring finger = 1/8 longer
Ring shorter than middle 1/8 ring finger = 3/16 longer
You get it! and so on
ring shorter than

Normal hand, middle finger is longer than ring, but when placed in a bowling ball my ring finger is actually further away from thumb(righty). however, I do know there is a technique in drilling called "dropping the ring finger" (shortening the span)which some people prefer. One driller did that to a new ball of mine, without telling me about it, and screwed up both my game and the ball until I figured out what was wrong. This was in my earlier days in bowling before I had any knowledge of drilling. I am a high-tracker anyway, and that dropped-ring finger caused me to track over fingers AND thumb-holes, and the ball(killer instinct) wouldn't hook two boards! After taking ball to new driller, and finding out where the problem was, I started doing my homework on drilling and layouts! The up-side is that I found a new ball-driller(Billy Rohde) whom I trust implicitly! He does EXCELLENT work, and will talk with you and explain everything he thinks would be right for your style, type of ball, and lane conditions you plan to use it for. A little homework can really keep from having mistakes happen on $100+ piece of equipment.

LuckyLefty,

Since the mayority of the persons middle finger is longer then the ring finger. Is that is why some drillers have a drop down for the ringer finger hole on the bowling ball. The finger holes on my bowling balls has a drop of 1/8 for my ring finger. I can feel that both  finger tips are still inside the ball when I release it. Before both holes had the same span and I felt that my middle finger tip was the only one holding the ball during my release. Because of my middle finger being longer my ring finger will come out first. Making my middle finger the sole support of the ball in my final release. Now it feels more comfortable, with the drop down ring finger, with equalize effort on both fingers. Is this the same of B. Taylor's explaination.
