going from two fingers to three...
« on: February 03, 2007, 03:15:50 AM »
recently got an ebonite sr300....and i've always thrown with just two fingers...only been bowling for about 2 years...but as soon as i got the sr300, i could not keep it on the lane to save my life....it was drilled with ebonite's #4 pattern.

and i've never been able to hook the ball with my thumb in the ball...so i figured..well...might as well put it in there, and see what happens...so wednesday night bowled 12 games, a couple 130's while i got used to it...and up to a couple 207's...

as the lanes started drying out, the ball started hooking...just didn't seem to hit the pins with any force...and i was bowling the same speed i usually do.

went out again last night, and just could not get the ball to move hardly at all...and my forearm hurts like hell  i feel like i'm really coming around the ball, and it looks like i got a lot of revs on it, but it's just not moving...

i brought it home last night...sanded it down to 1500 grit and gave it a hot water bath...maybe go out tomorrow night, depending on how the forearm feels.

any tips on getting used to the 3 fingers other than practice?

Sounds like your're not throwing the ball correctly.

When you come around the ball on release, try to keep your thumb pointing up towards the ceiling. Once you go too far, you'll get the reactions as stated above.

It may start rolling out too soon now.

My team mate was a 2 finger bowler who was using an old urethane ball. He would spray the ball all over the place but get good pin action because of the amount of revs he put on the ball. He maybe averaged 160. He wanted to join my team but I would not take him until he switched to a normal grip. He got a Big Deal drilled up stacked leverage and after 50 league games, his now averaging about 172.  His game is much better now. Just keep practicing fundamentals and in time, your game will be much better.

I think he means 3rd finger is the thumb. The thumb is still considered a finger to most people.

A guy in my league throws with 3 fingers.....and a thumb. He averages 231 with 3 honors already this year.

Work on your release into a pillow.  I used to bowl with two fingers, and then one of my coaches convinced me to move to a conventional grip.  What I did to practice was put a pillow or two on the wall, and just go though the bowling motion slowly using a one step approach.  It helped me get used to the release much quicker than I thought I could.

Also, what kind of two fingered bowler were you?  Were you under handed, or did you get your hand more to the side of ball.  Finally, get you span checked.  My original ball I used had a span 1/4 of an inch to long for me, but I never notice because I only threw two fingered, but when I started to use my thumb, the extra length killed revs and speed I could of had on the ball.
