PBA Experiance and Sport Shots
« on: August 22, 2007, 05:55:26 AM »
At the center I work at I control the patterns that are laid out for whatever function.  I have created many THS, Sport, and modified house shots.  We also put out the PBA shots along with many other tournament shots from other houses.

Here is the thing I have probably 200 shots stored in my computer.  In the past two days school has started and all the new students are coming back to campus and there are alot of bowlers that I hadn't seen before (very good thing).

I have had 4+ people in the 16 hours of work ask about what sport shot I have out.  Now the way they ask the question "what sport shot" is a little odd.  From these discussions they believe that the only sport shots are the PBA shots.  I see this as a problem as a sport shot can be anything as long as it is within the proper ratios.

It seems that (and correct me if you feel I am wrong) these people who have bowled in the PBA Experience were not educated about other sport shots as well.  I commend them for learning about the PBA shots but when they begin to argue with the staff about sport shots that where I get upset.  I have great pride in my center and the lane conditions.

In short I feel that even those bowlers who have stepped outside the THS and joined a PBA Experience league still need more education about lane conditions.  A sport shot does not have to have an animal name.  THERE ARE MORE THAN 5 SPORT SHOTS.  That and a they don't realize that most shots have a place where a good ball reactions can be found and there ball doesn't have to slide all the way down the lane for it to be a sport shot.

Challenging angles, different types of transition, weak carry on border line shots, equipment changes- these things and more are what a sport shot embodies and we have a long way to go even with those who want to learn to educate the bowling public.

Sorry about the rant but I hope you gain something from it.

Calm down a bit and think about this!  You have bowlers here who are not clamoring for easy conditions, and actually are interested in what challenge they are facing - this is definitely a GOOD THING!  So take the opportunity to arm yourself and expand their knowledge.  Find and print up any articles you can find that outline differences between Sport patterns and PBA patterns.  Include some lane "oil charts" as examples.

Then the next time they question or argue, you can come back with "yes, but there is a difference".  Basically, it's not that your bowlers are stupid, they are just confused on simple terminology.  So they call the PBA shots Sport Shots?  No biggie. In the big scheme, it sounds like they enjoy the challenge and they will probably be excited to hear there are even more shots out there to take on!  Feed the hunger and keep them coming back!

I just have to vent from time to time I didn't mean to be harsh but I was afraid of this reaction to the PBA Experience and branded patterns- also only encountering one of these guys asking I am protective of my staff that has to hear it about not knowing the conditions.

Counter staff are there to work the counter they aren't there to know how to program the machine.  They run one pattern on x number of lanes then the sport on the others.  I don't want them messing with the machine due to the fact that they are student workers and not all of them bowl (we also have very good billiards players that work here).  These bowlers are bowling for the school team and we have a pretty decent recruiting class but I find that they as well as many house hacks believe they know much more than they do.  You give a little bit of info and from there they think they know conditioning.

Like you said feed them the info as we will here, but I was not expecting the hostility of these people to my staff in the first week for not knowing the lane conditions.  It is set up by what I my manager and the coach would like.

But all will be well after tryouts and a week long education of challenging conditions.

From the original post, I didn't get that the customers were being hostile.  That being the case I understand your frustration.  It's good that they're interested, but unfortunate that people (especially SOME bowlers) can't be civil to the counter help.
