different focus levels?
« on: December 26, 2003, 01:12:02 AM »
In tournaments i rarely miss spares, miss my mark or breakpoint or have a messup in mechanics, i'm real consistant and hammer the pocket its usually just a question of carry.

But in leagues i dunno, i just dont have the same focus level. I mean i'm trying and im not just goin up there slinging the ball, but i just don't have the same mindset, i miss spares alot more (altho not alot), i do make mechanics mistakes and i do miss my target more often.

any suggestions to help me get in the same mindset for league as i am for tournaments? I did stop getting in league pots and stuff maybe that has something to do with it

The difference is probably in time between shots.  In a tournament it's easy to maintain focus when your shots are fairly close together.  In league, you usually have to wait 5 minutes or so between shots and this can throw you off.  Taking a few extra seconds before your shot to refocus yourself on the task at hand is a good start.  Take a deep breath, cose your eyes and envision the ball arcing to the pocket or taking out the spare.  Remember, there's no rush, so taking your time is ok.  Once you are on the approach, set yourself and go.  Taking too long once the ball is in your hand and your feet are in place is usually detrimental to your game.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

It is called "mental game" Game In a BoxLC.
As many of us do, you give some priorities to your competing arenas subconsciously and vary your focus level. I'm not interested in the physical reasons of it coz a solid bowler should/must maintain his/her focus in any kind of situation (unless of course there is a tragic factor to disturb this). For sure there are timing differences as well as the general atmosphere difference between leagues and tournaments. But again it's a matter of mental practicing.
Tom Corus quotes in his book: 35% of bowling is physical game where as 65% of it is "mental game".

Just my 2 cents..
