Title: Worst ball of 2016, and why
Post by: Impending Doom on January 20, 2017, 07:36:41 PM
Come on, friends. Which ball did you drill this year that makes you wonder why you put holes in that turd? 100 different surfaces, 3 drills, and 12 different houses, and it just didn't suit you at all.

Bonus points for mentioning if you gave it away and someone went and WRECKED with it.

Hyper cell skid. Should've been the hyper cell skid go forward. Gave both away to a youth bowler.

I was drinking the phaze and fight Kool aid...Let's just say I got a first batch phaze....And the fight was so-so on sport oil...

But there were some horror stories with that phaze holy moly

The Hammer Scandal !!

I honestly tried. I made surface adjustments from 500 to 4000 grit. I've used it on fresh and second shift THS conditions in different houses. I've used it on different sport conditions, most recently 47' Statue of Liberty. Disappointing is an understatement.

The ball rolls very early, and recovery in the forward transition from oil to friction is sub-par. I've seen a few high speed THS bowlers have some success with the Scandal bouncing it off the side wall friction, but that's not what I bought the ball for.

I just had my Scandal completely plugged and redrilled. I went with my favorite symmetric pin up drill pattern that works for me on just about everything. After a few practice games, it does seem better, but still not what I had originally expected. I almost never completely give up on a ball, but the Scandal is getting close.

These replies absolutely fascinate me!

I have a Hyper Cell skid that I put four different drills on, and still can't get it to roll right!

Yet, I bought a Fight, second hand from a fellow bowler,.......never re-drilled it, used it as is, and scored on a sport shot with it the first time out. I have also used it successfully on a medium heavy house shot!and used it successfully on the fresh medium house shot.....go figure!

Now I know I have to try this Phaze.......just because so many folks have turned their noses up on it!

I just bowled league this past Monday, and there were 4 people on my lanes with this ball, scoring like crazy!!! WOW! Go figure!

Fanatic BTU. I'm pretty sure I expressed my opinions about this ball multiple times on here already. I'm not the only one in my area who did not like it. Nothing like what it was advertised as. My son now has it. Not sure how he likes it.

I had the Phaze. I think the ball could have been decent if I had it in the weight I use and also if the box finish was knocked off.

Every Phaze I have seen has been unimpressive, but what baffles me is that the Phaze II seems to roll really really well.

I don't know what year the Motiv Graffiti Tag was made, but it was the worse ball I owned in 2016.

I didn't see anybody throw that ball well, either.

FIGHT was a terrible ball.  Suppose to roll like my IQ Tour.  Not a chance.  Waste of money.

Without a doubt the Storm Phase, a very expensive spare/ urethane ball.

Like I said, I've seen some league bowlers have some success with the Scandal too. I've also taken mine up to 4000 and it worked OK on our THS. That's fine, but there are many mid-range balls that work as well or better on a THS. The Scandal's little brother, the Solid Rebel, is just one example. That's one fun ball to throw!!

I'm talking about the performance of the ball on it's intended condition, which is heavier/longer oil. It's not just me. I've seen many very good bowlers use the Scandal in my two sport shot leagues, and it almost always goes quickly back into their bags.

A few weeks ago, I had my Scandal completely plugged and redrilled to my favorite Symmetric pattern, and at least in practice, it's rolling better. Maybe I'm being overly harsh. Still, I have many oilers in my rotation (3 Gurus, The Mix, and a Marvel-S) that perform much better in heavy oil. I just got a Pitbull drilled up and will throw it for the first time in practice tomorrow opposite the Scandal.

But as you say, go figure.

So, the Scandal is a ball for heavy oil? If so, than that would explain the adjustments that I made to be able to score in our third game. I went to the extreme right of all four of these folks with a hybrid piece, more pearlized than solid!

Worst ball I have seen from Motiv.  I tried to like it and use it, but it was always a disappointment and never really worked well for anything. Gave it away for a beer.

Two guys in my league use the Tag and bowl pretty well with it, one of them being my uncle and the other is the centers PSO.

Yes indeed...

At least that's the way Hammer markets the Scandal. On the Hammer site, they say it's the strongest hooking Hammer ball ever produced. I should have known better after buying the Hammer Deadly Aim. The company should have issued a recall and apologized after releasing that round wonder.

I don't want to rag any further on the Scandal. I threw it again today in a practice session after the complete plug and redrill, and I see a place for it on my second shift THS league. I think it will fill a nice medium condition niche where I need to move further in and tighter on a breaking down condition. But I don't see it matching the marketing hype, which is why I bought the ball in the first place. It's a disappointment, but I'd like to remove it from my list of the "worst ball of 2016". It's not that bad.

Probably why this should be titled "Worst Ball Of 2016 For You, And Why".

Almost every ball that someone hates, another will love.

Agreed, if the Tag was a total loser, it would never have made it out of development.
