Here in Houston, we have been spoiled a little with league prize funds. Im use to bowling in leagues where the payout is $3000.00 to 6500.00 for a 5-member team. It has gotten as high as $10,000.00 in some leagues before.

With that being said, I would have to say I wouldnt bowl without a prizefund.

It gets very rough, and competative here in the high payout leagues in this area (AND WE LOVE IT). Because of a high prizefund, it makes for good pressurized bowling week in and week out.

Some of these guys AND women think that they are bowling on T.V.  (lol!)

Earl

Thus, a partial reason for the demise of most leagues from 1985 - 2005.

If 85% of the current league bowlers can't gamble and risk the rewards of a big payout, they wouldn't bowl at all.

This is the death of the Integrity of bowling, not the high scores.

Greed has become the reason to learn to bowl well.

I bowl to win period. But I also bowl tournaments to win and win the top prize in the tournament, Im not paying to bowl in a tournament just for the trophy, I want the cash too, gets me more equipment and more tournament entries.

I would if it was a PBAX league, with a prize at the end of the year.  I'm not saying money, but something like a bowling ball?

Now as for the demise of league's,  And people not taking The PBA seriously, I believe that's the fault of the ABC/USBC and 99% of every league out there.

Why??  because of all the cupcake House Shot's that make's some average joe, shoot 220 all day long with out a clue.

If the USBC would crack down and make a sport shot the regulation shot, the PBA would get some respect.   Cuz then you wouldnt have house Hacks saying stupid crap like:  " Hell, I could shoot 190 if i was in the PBA "  or  " I beat that guy who bowled on TV, so I should be able to bowl on TV "

Now as for the salaries of the guys in the PBA, yea i think it's cheap how a few years ago, top prize for a tourny was 40k and the Major's was 100k, and now it's like half that.  WTF!!!!!!!

Also if the PBA really wants TV time, move the show to Tuesday's like they had it, a few yrs ago, instead of Sundays.  And get a decent TV deal going with ESPN and get some major sponser's to pony up the $$$$   then you'll have guys making 100-200k with no problem.

I bowl in a (parent/chil) league with my 7 year old son.
Bonding, education, and bowling - all in 1 fun morning event! No prize fund, but the experience is well worth the lineage/fees.

When I go bowling, I go because I enjoy bowling win or lose and I enjoy visiting with other senior bowlers in my league, so I would have no problem bowling for the lineage cost plus the secretary's fee.

I don't really care about the money, I love the competition.  Spending a season competiting with some good friends striving for victory every night is what it's about.  Very few things beat the feeling of sharing a hard earned team victory with some of your best friends.

I realized a long time ago that you normally cannot feed Ethiopia on you league winnings.  So if things are ok I'd bowl with no prize fund.

Out of curiosity, not wanting to HI-JACK this thread, what did people bowl for before there were big prize funds or the P.B.A.?

Why was bowling so popular that it NEEDED a sanctioning body in the first place?  The A.B.C. was formed in 1895 to govern bowling and to create the playing rules so that everyone, everywhere would be playing the same game/sport.  Something about bowlig made it attractive to many participants, even back then. What was it? Sure wasn't big prize funds.

I, myself, enjoy the sport and the competitive nature of it. I enjoy the personal challenge to always improve my knowledge AND my skills.  Tiger Woods made a comment about golf recently.  He was asked a question about playing the game and mastering it when he replied that " You never MASTER the game, that if you want to be the best, you are constantly learning everything about it you can and ALWAYS trying everything you can to improve your skills, knowledge, and abilities".  That is how I feel about bowling.

If winning brings me money, great, I can use it.  If it doesn't, that's fine too, because I'm not in it to get rich, I am in it because I love doing it and want to be the best bowler I possibly can.  Tiger Woods probably feels the same way about golf, just got lucky and was great at a sport that pays tons of cash, but I believe he would play for nothing, if that's the way golf was. I think he loves the game, money or not.

I have bowled in leagues where there was no prize fund and I'd do it again because I just love to bowl.

I have before and there's nothing wrong with it. However, the one I bowled in didn't even offer trophies. I would like at least a trophy or a patch at the end if my team won. Gotta compete for something more than pride otherwise, you're basically just practicing alongside 63 other people.

Jugg, High Rollers and tournaments of the like have kept many great bowlers from wanting or NEEDING to become pro. That is a real problem. The Professional level of the game/sport should be the ONLY place ANYONE can make real good money.

These alternate levels of bowling (semi-pro, professional Amateur etc.) have drained the competitive spirit right out of scratch bowling. The ultimate goal of a bowler should be the Professional level. Not High Rollers, TAT, ABTA, etc.

JLB I think your missing the reason why the money and bowlers went to the alternate levels of bowling. Because in the early 90's the PBA became a joke.

So bowlers found other ways to compete and make money without having to jump through the PBA bullsh*t.

Look at Rash in TV last week with the PBA fining him $1100 ?? With so many rules and codes to go by, why anyone would wanna be in the PBA (on tour) is beyond me. Now you got these house hacks that avg 200 for 2 seasons and get a card just to get ball discounts (LOL...tell me that doesnt have an effect on the veiw of the "PBA" ?

Like I said, it didnt all happen at once, you gotta look at the reason why the money and bowlers went to other methods then the PBA.
