Would you buy a ball for just one tournament?
« on: February 14, 2008, 06:28:35 AM »
Title says it all.  I have no need to use particle in league, and as far as tournaments go I bowl Nationals every year and usually city.  The last few years at Nationals I've had a hard time getting the ball to move, so I'm considering buying a particle ball.  But I would use it for 9 games (at most) and then be done.

So do you struggle with what you have, or spend $200+ on something that is going to spend most of the time in your bag?

It depends on how much money I could make by having that different piece in my bag.  I like the reaction of Particle pieces, so if I thought it would work for a tournament, I would have no problem picking one up just for that.

I would have one in my bag. I have one ball that I use maybe once or twice every so often and trust me it comes in handy. Its a heavy oiler and I don't even use it in the PBA league except for on the shark pattern. Heavy oil balls, most people are not going to use but I rather have a piece that will work in heavy oil as opposed to not having it.

Last year at Nationals, I had great movement with a Black widon and an SR300. Check my videos to see.

I wouldn't, but I do not feel like I would make enough money with it to justify the cost.  Plus I'd get my butt whooped for spending $200 on something I use once.  I buy balls to fill spots and if necessary I will adjust the surface to suit what I'm seeing.  I'd rather dull up an existing ball to handle the oil than drop a big pile of money to gamble that it will be worthwhile.

That said, if you're looking for a versatile ball that will handle its share of oil, look at some of Lanemasters strong particles.  Dull they'll handle as much oil as you want, polished they'll give you great reactions on medium to medium-heavy lanes.  Most would look at something like an NS2 or AMB Particle and say "too condition-specific" and at 320-grit like the AMB comes, you're right, but the higher RG and a lot less surface will make a great, usable ball.

You're left-handed, so it doesn't count

My two options are

Particle Ball
Special Agent - 2000
TRoad Pearl - OOB
Spare Ball

OR

Special Agent - 600
Black Widow -1000 to 2000
TRoad Pearl - OOB
Spare

Why not simply take a ball from your arsenal and adjust the surface for the tournament? Giving it some more surface, you'd probably get the extra traction you need. Buying a new or extra ball is IMHO not worthwhile, since you also need to get a feel for the ball (I'd never blindy play any equipment in league or tournament) beforehand - with an adjusted surface, you will still have the benchmark reaction in kind. And the ball is easily re-adjusted after everything is over

Yes I would!  This game is all about matching up the correct coverstock to the pattern.  If your bowling a tourney and know that a particular ball will give you a better chance at scoring higher then yes buy it!

If you only put 9 games on the ball this season then it should be plenty fresh for next season's trip to nationals.

Brunswick Mammoth - High load particle that is very affordable(great bang for the buck in heavy oil) so you would not have to worry about only using it 9 games a year!
