Would you call this excessive bowling? :P
« on: September 02, 2006, 12:48:18 PM »
Well I have been bowling on average 7 games a day for the past month. Sometimes less, sometimes more but they make up for it. For example I bowled 14 games today and 14 yesterday. I’ve been using the same two very aggressive balls (Polished PBA Shark and Hawg Zilla) for both heavy and light oil. I use both balls about the same amount of time with all of these days. Starting out with the hawg for heavy and moving to the skark when my line dries up.

Now here in lies my problem. I’ve had these balls for exactly a month today bowling on average 7 games a week. The longer I have them the more my scores drop. I started out averaging around 205. I have now dropped down to somewhere around 165. Now if you haven’t notice by my horrid typing skills I’m only 14. I’ve been trying to convince my parents that I need a new ball. We have talked to my local pro shop numerous times about getting a new ball and he has squashed me every time by saying that I just need to improve my skills. Now my response to this is that I’ve been bowling the exact same way I have been when I first got the ball but my ball just won’t react like it used to. I’ve already tried different coverstock alterations including sanding and rejuvenation.  My local house also really barely has heavy oil and both balls are really meant for heavy oil even though I normally bowl on med-light. I would want to buy a radical inferno. My birthday is on the 13th and it would be a perfect gift to get a new ball.

Can anyone give a nice (long if possible) explanation on why I would need a new ball?

Hmm, i can try to make this long i guess...

Like you (almost), i'm also 13, which is pretty much the same age. You would probably need a new ball, just because well, it's a NEW ball! A newer ball, right out of the box, is usually stronger than it is used for about 20 - 50 games (it's obvious!).

I will tell you my lesson, from getting a new ball. Back when i was 9 or 10, i had a 120 somethin average (hahaha) with a Power Groove Proactive (used for about 2 years). I then needed a new ball. I got the Hammer Switch Blade (RIP ), which improved my average by 25 pins (yes that's unbelieveable. Then my average started raising more and more, until i got about a 157.

Until this year i still only have a 165 average. UNTIL now.. I just got a NEW Columbia Action Packed. My first new ball since i was 10. The Packed sure Packed up my average as well. I went from 165, to consistent 195 - 205 averages (yes again, unbelievable!).

This is my little lesson from getting a NEW ball. It's great to get on because sometimes it could mean everything! I hope this helps, because this is pretty much my bowling career, in words, lol.

The thing is....ive put well over 200 games on the ball and i think it died. I tried out one of my friends ball (new ball) and even though it didnt fit I threw a 10x better game than i did with my own ball.

I just think the ball has lost its hook and its greatly screwing my average over and my parents think that since its only a month old its imposible even though ive bowled more games than most people do in 6 months!

Maybe you should get a New ball, and a Spare ball. The spare ball can be for practicing. Not just shooting spares and keeping score but just to practice everything else (release, approach, target shooting, etc.). Then if you use your spare ball for practicing, you won't have to worry about overusing a ball...

Just a though..

Clean it, resurface it, bake it. If the reaction doesn't come back, your parents should realize by that time that you're not just suffering from a bad case of "newballitis"...

But try to bring your existing equipment back first. A 40 pin drop says that there's something wrong besides "worn out" equipment. If you're averaging 205, then drop - you shouldn't drop to less than around 185 - because a 185 average bowler is still picking up MOST spares.

Try CPR on the ball(s) that died.

Our house has a summer special: from May 15th to August 15th for $179 you can bowl anytime all you want. I typically put on 14-20 games per session but have gone as high as 24. I figured I easily bowled 400 games this summer and although I did rotate equipment there were a couple balls I routinely took to almost each session ( Vapor Zone and Atomic Charge). Both of these balls are entering their second full season of use (and I bowl in 3 leagues). So, you can add on a full season of league and the additional practicing I do during the season. I can't even fathom how many games these balls have on them but I'll tell you this: they still react just as they did, or very, very close, to when I bought them.

I clean my equipment AFTER EVERY USE and have NEVER experienced dead ball syndrome. I have a Super Charge that I bought used on Ebay and it's going on it's third season. I've shot many, many leagues and tournaments with this ball (not to mention practicing) and it's still got the same punch it's always had.

So, my advice is: if you can finagle your parents into buying you a new ball then get in the habit of religiously cleaning it/ them everytime you use 'em. Don't let them sit for days after having absorbed oil. I use Isopropyl Alcohol for routine maintenance and Ultimate's Black Magic Rejuvenator or Storms Reacta Clean for more thorough cleanings.

Here, look at my "arsenal"...there's not one ball there that's "dead" and it's because I treat each one with great care because a bowling ball is an investment, not something that should be considered disposable simply because it has x amount of games on it.

I agree with Mycroft...When I go practice, I get the lanes to shut off the monitor above the approach. Also, practice is good, but too much can hurt you. Your arm might be tired, just take it easy. But a coach is something to look into. They can help you with the little things that you might not be seeing. They are your extra set of eyes that are watching your walk, arm swing, where you hit on the lane roll of the ball, ect... But keep practicing, just take it easy.

Read the reviews for any random ball.  You'll see that everyone averages higher with a brand new ball ("I shot 735 the first night in league."  "I threw another 300 after two practice sessions with this new ball.").  The 205 is not indicative of how well you really bowl.

You are bowling a lot.  A lot.  If indeed the balls are dead, you're only reinforcing bad habits by trying to make them work.  Likewise having condition-inappropriate balls.  Nevertheless, with a 165 average, you should be picking up more spares.  A lot of people don't try as hard to pick up spares in practice, or they'll only practice picking up spares, so your average during practice sessions may not be indicative of your ability.  Learn to throw what you have straighter or get a plastic ball.  There are lots of really cool looking ones out there.

My opinion is you are trying to over-correct the problem. You play one day & see your average score has dropped. So then you go the next day & notice its dropped again, so you believe you must go again in order to achieve higher scores & so on.

This happened to me, but a bit less extreme than yourself. I was in a slump early last month & i went straight to the bowl to play a few games. Nothing improved for me but i continued to go, continuing to get bad scores & playing awful.

Eventually i got sick of it & literally 'starved' myself (on purpose) of the game i love to play. Then i went to practice, & all of sudden, i remembered 'how to bowl', just like i used to play.

Ever since then, i have scored so much better & i cant wait for my season to start next Thursday. BRING IT ON!!

Most of my first post was exaggeration. I did this to purposly lie becuase theres no way of convincing them. The amount of games was correct but the average was not. After my most recent league I had an avrg. of 193. The numbers I gave you weren’t exact but were also numbers from random practices in which I had HORRID ball-pattern match ups and my balls would/still are (oiling machine is broken and cant put anything close to heavy down) rolling out on me. Those numbers are from having tons and tons (I mean at least 5 a game) hard splits. So many I’ve learned to pick up the 7 6 10 like its child’s play. I did get a coach, the same guy in the proshop who is telling me other things than he’s telling my parents probably because I’m just a “kid”.  He is telling me I need to just adjust. Now sometimes another (much better) coach is just hanging around and he thinks it’s the ball and I’m throwing perfect and actually asked to speak to my parents about putting me on a varsity high school bowling team when im only in 9th grade.

Basically I’ve had plenty of people tell me I’m throwing fine and I’m just getting horrid pin action and horrid splits that are too hard for me to convert. My average is also based upon have normally a 220ish first game then complete garbage the next two after everything breaks down.

Ill probably be taalking to this other coach later today about talking to my parents about getting me a new ball.

Strike for show, spare for dough.

Lessons and a plastic ball (preferably a White Dot, as I'm biased) are in order.
