On ruining bowling!

Thoughts on Baker formats!

I have have often had the "pleasure" of watching for some reason the Collegiate woman''s championships on TV sometime every winter.
I''ve noticed they use the Baker format and often have very exciting scores of like....oh...165 vs 143!

Many times after watching this excitement I have thought....that show could singlehandedly KILL bowling.  The non bowler watches it and says...."My Grandmother just had a 147 last week using an 8 pound ball and bowling for the first time in 17 years!"  "She could have been runnerup in the National Championships!"  She''s 79!

Well...recently I went to a state high school championship!  Baker format for teams and NOW I sort of get it!  It was competed on a lovely house crown!

1.  It''s fun.
2.  The crowd goes wild.
3.  There is teamwork.
4.  Because of the long breaks the players are completely cold and lots of pressure.

I came up with these conclusions!

1.  It''s fun....on a house shot!
2.  The crowd goes wild...on a house shot!
3.  There is teamwork....on either shot house or tough!
4.  Because of the long breaks the players are completely cold and could never splice boards without some sort of more even flow.

MY conclusion....Baker is OK!  Baker on a Sport shot....killer....and not really fair to the bowler''s in allowing them to display their real talents!

You''re thoughts!

Lefty,
I have to agree with you. I aave watched many a collegiate tourney and wondered a few things.
1. Why do they look like they are all using the exact wrong equipment.
2. After the first 3 players go high or light why don"t they try something else.
3. And finally why am I wasting the time watching this. But truth be told it is love of the game and any bowling on TV is still better then other shows.
As far as the Baker format, it is a lot more fun doing then watching in my opinion.

I bowl a baker tourney every year, my GF's Dad runs a tourney where the the High School team bowls against the coaches and various adult teams. At first when he told I pretended to be excited and thought "man 5 games of baker I will be asleep before we are done"

Ended being a great time, no real money on the line but that is no huge deal, we had a great time almost won it. This season we will do it again bringing our scratch team for Thursday night to bowl. GFs Dad is excited to have the kids bowl against a true Adult Scratch mens team he figures it will be a great experience for the kids.

I think one of the reasons that the Baker format is used is for time purposes.  For a two day tournament, Saturday is used for the normal 5 man team event and usually 6 games are bowled.  On Sunday, 15 games are bowled in Baker format.  Because the Baker format is used these games are done quickly and teams are able to get on the road.  Some schools travel 7-8 hours by bus to get to these tournaments.  Baker is like the ultimate team game for bowling.

I agree with the lots of pressure, but the breaks are no longer than when two five bowler teams compete.  --  JohnP

I have heard that the collegiate baker system is really coach based.. you throw where and what your coach tells you to throw.. For some reason the coaching isn't "go get a strike".. It is like you are throwing the ball the way the coach wants you to regardless of what you know the outcome will be..

maybe not that extreme but that is what I have heard about it.

Guys...Ladies the problem IS Baker on sport seems to often lead to low scores and to compound it...that is what is televised ruining the general publics perception of the skills of the bowlers!

The point being...our sport is so precariously weak in this super weak economy that it doesn't need any nicks in its public personna AT ALL.

My suggestion....no more Baker tournaments televised except on the most scorable of conditions....and the only televising of Baker sport tournaments should be by short circuit TV into the homes of bowling coaches and low scoring aficiondos that enjoy 157 to 139 matches.

The end....

My thoughts...

They throw where their coach tells them because sport bowling IS a team sport.  If everyone works together, the lanes break down correctly and the shot gets a ton easier.  If everyone doing their own thing, the shot goes to hell.
