Wrist Trouble

Im sure alot of us have some wrist tweaks and pains at some times. Im wondering what I can do to keep them from continuing. It gets very bad at times where I don't feel pain until the very bottom of release and it makes me jerk up or throw it slower. Its starting to piss me off haha. Any exercises or things I can do to help. I wanna know what you guys do. PLEASE!!! lol

As much as I hate to say it, a wrist brace may help you a lot. I know many people call them "crutches" but I'm not a pro bowler -- I bowl for the competition and the fun -- so if I have to use one to alleviate pain, I'll do it and the naysayers can bite me. It's not their wrist, and bowling's not that important compared to your ability to make a living and have good quality of life.

I've gotten into a rhythm now where I can use a brace for two weeks, then bowl "naked" for three weeks, then back to the brace for two, etc. I ALWAYS warm up with the brace on even though it might leave me hunting for the first frame or two of the game. But if you're on THS, it shouldn't matter that early in the first game.

If you're having bothersome pain, though, go see a doctor at least to get a diagnosis. If it's just tendinitis, the only thing that's going to cure it is not bowling (or, at the very least, using a brace). But if you've got bone spurs or a cyst in there, you need to know.

I'd check where the pain actually comes from. It can be a bad ball fit, but also "wanting too much", if you force the ball or try to steer and overpower it.

One important thing is what Deadbait mentions: too much cupped wrist puts a lot of stress not only on your wrist, but also on the fingers' and thumb tendon, it can thoroughly ruin your hand.

Instead of trying to force the ball, rather try to paly with a "flat" wrist as your basic release, and work on the timing for a proper release and to stay behind the ball thorughout the delivery and keep the wrist/hand in a stable position without breaking or overturning/topping. You will be astonished how much hook you can generate without effort, and with much less stress on the hand! I'd just keep the cupped wrist in store for cases where you really need some extra revs, e. g. on long, oily lanes or for deep lines. Just do not take this 120% case as a standard.

Additionally, you can do some wrist training through weight lifting, but it takes some weeks to show effect.

You could also try drilling something up that's 1 pound lighter to see if it's pain free. But definitely see a doc.
