help with fingers
« on: January 06, 2005, 02:48:33 PM »
heres the story -

for whatever reason, my fingers just arent able to hold up to the wear and tear of long formats.  after two years on the JBT, both of which were very successful but could have been 10 times better if not for this problem, i have come to realize that my fingers just arent capable of holding up for 4-5 straight days of bowling, or 2 consecutive days of long formats.  i have bowled 15-20 games before, on numerous occasions, but its mainly because i have a high tolerance of pain and am able to bear with it.  after a while, i just cant get the same hand in the ball as i had earlier in the day because of swelling and soreness.

after having yet another brutally painful weekend of tournaments and league(new years day WMG and league sunday morning), and yet another tournament where i did okay but could have done much better, i am ready to experiment.  i have come to the conclusion that my span and inserts are comfortable and arent the problem, and that the solution lies solely in my fingers.

i was thinking of getting a latex/rubber glove, the ones that are skintight, and using the middle and ring fingers while i bowl.  i could go 1/2 size bigger with the inserts to accomodate the extra size of the covering, and hopefully this will give me the durability i am looking for and the grip(i found some online that are textured at the fingertips) i have always had.  this may sound completely stupid to some, but i am looking for honest opinions, or even if this has already been done(im not sure if there is a product out there like this already).  thanks in advance, as im very interested to hear what everyone has to say.

Exactly what type of pain?I have really bad fingers as well.I am I Martial Arts instructor and I have broken my fingers countless times. My joints swell up also after extended bowling.I use a product called steel fingers. They look like two stupid popcicle sticks on my hand, but, I have a lot less stress on my fingers.I also feel with this product that I get a lot more fingers into the ball. The only problem I have with them is in the summertime when my hands sweat. They start to smell.

mainly soreness and irritation, sometimes swelling...i looked at the steel fingers you mentioned, but i am talking about something for the fingers themselves...not to help relive strain on the fingers.  my main problem has to do with the skin, not my arm and wrist strength.  i think im going to try my contraption when i get a chance and see how it works out.  anybody else have an idea?  thanks for the info snowman.

Eric,

Another BR friend is a gardener by trade. His hands and fingertips got pretty beaten up. I suggested a hand cream that contains Vitamin E (an oil) and/or Aloe Vera, which is a natural healer. He indicated that they worked well for him. My skin can crack just below the fingertip joint, when I unconsciously shove my finger below that joint, into the insert.  It doesn't hurt a lot, but the crack oozes blood which makes the release slippery. Therefore, I keep my inserts tight enough that I can't shove them in too far. When I do, Vaseline brand handcream with those 2 ingredients helps heal my fingers. There are other brands; check supermarkets and large drug stores. Use after each bowling session for a few moments before goign to sleep might help a lot.

YOu can try the latex/rubber gloves, but I wonder if their friction will still rub the skin on your fingertips, when you lift and release the ball. I think Pete Weber uses a leather glove to protect his fingers. I'm not sure how thick it is, but it will be thicker than the 1/2 size you're thinking of using.

jeff,

thanks for the info.  ive been using the aloe hand cream for the past few weeks, but this past weekend at the WMG really got me to thinking of a new way to get around this problem.  im not sure if the latex glove would work either, but i figured id try it during a practice session to see how it feels during and after bowling.  if nothing works, ill have to look deeper into the issue of the insert sizes im using, and anything else that could be affecting it.  thanks jeff.

I would simply use the new bowler’s protective tapes that stretch.

Vise makes several different types.  You see guys on the tour using this type of tape all the time. Just cover the bad areas.

charlest,

I think the glove Pete Weber use is a golf glove.  I may be wrong, but it's not as thick as say... a batting glove.

hotwire,
How's it going?  You ever tried/considered pickle juice?  I know it sounds odd, but it is common among pitchers who have problems with blisters.  Hell, Nolan Ryan use to soak his fingers early in his career.  It toughens the skin a bit.

Vernon,

I know Weber's is supposed to be a golf glove; I imagine there are 49 of them, like there are in bowling. I think the important factor may be that the material is thin leather, not as thin as latex, and very fine stitching so as not to lose feel.

When I was a kid I used my father's ball but had to wear a street leather glove to make my hands fit his huge thumb and finger holes. What a hoot! Oh, and it made the grip a fingertip for me. He had a large hand.

im not exactly sure of the pitches, but if none of these little solutions help or fix the problem, i am going to talk to my driller and see if there are any possibilities.  my fingers feel comfortable and flexible in the ball, its just the fact that my fingers get very sore and irritated after awhile depending on the weather, format, and amount of down time between rounds.  as a result, i cant get as much hand in the ball, which i see as a big disadvantage, especially if i have been throwing it well up until that point.  thanks for all the info everyone...keep it coming.  im going to try the latex glove, or something like it, at some point in the near future...and ill probably try everything else thats been mentioned.

I think he means more of less its not his joints but his skin? Correct me if Im wrong though. If thats what you mean, why not just try some of that stretchy colored tape? As for soreness of joints and such, why not TRY different pitches? You may be having to bend your fingers to far and your just used to it so you dont realize it.
