Nice vid Nick. I think i have to show my driller how to do that . BTW, a suggestion: can you make a vid that shows how to drill a ball with sarge ester grip?

Why? its the same as drilling a ball normally, just different pitches and span, Its not like you need to do anything special... And the people that wanted to see the find the pap video... you do realize it takes about 5 seconds you line the track with the armidillo(sp) and bam, there is the pap...

As far as the PAP, if I did a video to show how to find it, it'd be hard to replicate to most without the proper tools. I could do it, that is no biggie.

For those of us without an Armadillo, how about doing it with the 3 methods from the BR FAQ?

quote:
PAP (POSITIVE AXIS POINT)
The axis of the ball during the first few revolutions that is created totally by the bowler's release style. The point on the ball that is equidistant from all points of the release ball track.

Ways to find it:

Least accurate: Draw a perpendicular (90°) line 6.75" from your track through grip center the end of the line will be close to your PAP.

Very accurate: Use an Armadillo Axis point locator tool. Place the Armadillo on your track using the line that most closely represents your track arc and mark the spot indicated by the Armadillo.

Exact: Roll low flare (spare) ball down the center of the lane where the highest concentration of oil is then using a grease pencil trace your track. Place the ball in a spinner with the track down and orient the ball to where when it it spinning the trace line doesn't wobble up and down. Then take the pencil and place it on the top of the ball and move it around until it goes from making a circle to a defined dot, or use a quarter scale/pro sect tool and draw a line connecting your track at points that are 180° from each other and repeat the step at a point near 90° from the first line where the 2 lines intersect is your PAP. If you do not have a low flare ball you can use any ball as long as you use the track that is closest to your thumb and farthest from your fingers. This is the release track, because as a ball flares the track migrates away from the thumb and towards the fingers.

what exactly do the vacu-grip do?  I know you use vise grips, but whats the thing in having the top of the hole bigger than the bottom?  Is that in case your fingers swell or something?

Nick, another very helpful video.  I want to start replacing my own grips, since my local pro shop charges $10 for that service  So, what kind of glue are you using, and what tool(s) will I need to be able to replace my grips?  Any tips on replacing grips?  Thanks.

Exactly!

Finger sizes swell, grips stretch to accomodate.

For the PAP, how many people here have Armadillos that DON'T run a shop? I know I wouldn't!

A quarter scale, yes.  But not an Armadillo.  I think a PAP video would be nice personally.  The biggest problem I've had in locating mine is finding enough oil on the lanes.  It is very tough to do on dry lanes, even with a low flaring ball.    No oil=no track lines.

duvallite,

All you really need to replace grips is a small flathead, a good knife like the ones Vise sells, and some good glue. I recommend Plasti-Zap, which is sold at hobby shops or online for about 4.00 a bottle.

What a coincidence as I just returned from my driller. He's redoing 9 balls that I had vacu-grips put in. They felt great and worked as advertized but I lost the "feel" if I had to do anything much more than fluff the ball. I'm not criticizing them per se' because I know they work well for a lot of people (in fact the driller that is replacing mine uses them), but for me I like the feel of my fingers coming off the ball and I lost it with the vacu-grips....too much of a marshmellow feeling (as one local driller described them).

Good work though Nick....your videos are great!

Doesn't gluing in all four sides defeat the purpose? How does the insert expand? I was told to glue in the front and back just as you described in your video and leave the sides alone.

WALLSHOT,

Certain inserts don't stick so well, so gluing the front and sides is OK. The back top is unglued, but the bottom of the back is glued. If the grip is sticking up, gluing the sides is a must!

Did you go down in grip size 1 - 1.5 when doing the Vacu?

Yes, the fit really was perfect, just didn't like the feel when releasing in "power mode".

Good info, Nick.

Armadillo, no.  Quarter scale, no.  Spinner, yes!

I'm sure I could get my pro shop to give me a grease pencil.

The whole "trace the track with grease pencil, then put on a spinner and......." thing just sounds confusing.  That is definately something that would be easier to understand if I could see it.  Part of my problem is that the centers I bowl in do not have a pro shop on site.

I love the fact that he used a contact zone.  It is only the second or third I have seen (mine being the first).  Way to go nick!

It was out on the rack, so I decided to adopt it to use for my demo.

I'm suprised nobody noticed that I was drilling on the serial # side.
