Intentionally blow up a wall shot
« on: October 12, 2004, 06:08:12 AM »
Do any of you use a ball way too aggressive to last all night just so you can blow a big hole in the oil?  My Monday scratch league is a major THS with a bunch of overinflated averages and egos.  I have been using a super-duper-monster-hook ball for a few weeks now in the first 2-3 games of a 4 game series because it carries very well, but also because I dries out the lanes.  It totally destroyed a pair of one-dimensional down and in type players one week.

Last night, I think it even got in the head of a ultra premier type player.  He even commented after the first game about the ball I was using.  I flat told him that I was going to blow a hole in the pattern.  I'm not a flinger, but I'm a mere hack and nowhere near the level of my competitor last night as he is an all-world stud.  However, this strategy seemed to work this time.  He really only put up one big game, one average game, but had 2 horrible games.  I realize he wasn't at his best, but I wonder if my strategy did play into his demise somewhat?

We are still early, so I may be catching some players by surprise and they may figure it out the second time around and crush me.

Now I see why some players do end up switching balls so much.  They are using a ball that they know is too strong to make it all night, but one that has potential to explode for a game or 2.  I am a much better spare shooter than most in the league, so I like to take away the carry contest if I can.

Sweet strategy!  I've been thinking of this, but I don't have any trouble getting movement on the ball, so I'd probably be chunking it in the left channel at 35 feet!  Then I'd get it two ways 1) people mad at me because I'm messing up their shot and 2) people saying I'm a blatant sandbagger! LOL.

I've heard stories of people doing this or throwing plastic balls during practive to carry down the oil on a certain parts of the lane.

While not in Robert Smith’s range, ksucat gets pretty good revs.

I really think it was more psychological rather than physical. Most of the ones I’m thinking of are pretty one dimensional and if you get into their heads just a little they are done.

In all reality if anything you made a good tube shot for them.

Keep this up and you’ll ruin your nice guy image and they will start thinking of you like they do me , a big #($*%&.

I forgot to mention that this is second shift, so I don't need 400 grit, just not shiny.  I'm also not sacrificing any score when using this ball as my first 2 games are very high with my super hooker.  That is the primary reason I started using it.  The hole in the pattern came by accident at first.

I'm struggling a little the last game if I have to switch balls.  I've been able to make it all night a couple times so I just need a little more experience to learn how to make the ball change real successful.  Right now, it is hit and miss.

Please don't consider this sandbagging as I will not be low enough to get any handicap from tournaments.  I'm just trying to win.  Well...maybe a little bit of punishment to the opponent, but mostly just trying to win.  Watch out for those that appear to be quiet, nice guys.  They are busy thinking.

The current BJI has an article that alledges that 3 Storm staffers (Himmler, Peterson, and Healy) did something similar on the tv pair to Chris Barnes (Brunswick staff) in the tournament of champions lst year.
