Scorekeeping poll.
« on: November 11, 2004, 09:39:35 AM »
With many on this board possibly growing up knowing nothing but computerized scorekeepers, I was wondering how many people don't know how to keep score.  Although, this might not only applies to newbies, as I used to know a few bowlers back in the grease pencil days that would dodge the duty of keeping score when it was their team's turn to do so.  I thought they were just lazy or selfish, but looking back, maybe they didn't know how to do it?

So, do you know how to keep score?  I do.

I remember bk25 saying a while ago that he had no idea how to keep score. I've grown up with computer scoring and i know how to do it.

I bowled back in the pencil score keeping days and know how to do it.  I really miss it sometimes.  Some of us remember well those tied score games.  We'd all recheck the calculations and sometimes find a mistake which would break the tie. Nowadays, what you see is what you get.  I'm sure many errors slipped by unnoticed back then.

I still run the calculations in my head periodically.

I actually knew how to score before I started bowling leagues.  (I bowled a little bit during the summer before my first season last year).

I add up my score all the time.  I'll play out scenarios of what my score will be if I do "X", or if "Y" happens, etc.

I use to be the one that would jump right in to score on league night .. sort of miss it .. and all the superstitions tied to marking the score! Give me a FENCE .. don't fill in the strike box .. don't fill in the score if I have more then a three strike string going .. etc. Use to get a LOT OF LAUGHS!

There are a lot of things I don't know how to do - but scorekeeping is NOT one of them.
In 1972, when the Calif. Women's State Tournament was in San Jose, I kept score for EVERY squad. 9 PM Friday, Noon, 3 PM and 6 PM (might have been 9 PM too) Saturday and 9 AM, Noon, and 3 PM on Sunday.
(added on Edit) The tournament ran from April to August. Every Weekend

This was for team event - and they always gave me the Classic or A division teams, because I was one of their best scorekeepers. I was 15, and made enough money that summer to buy my first car!  I used to clean up on the tips, too - because I was good...

I miss keeping score.

My Thursday nite league still has hand scoring, and i dont mind it lol.  I notice the computers mess up all the time, expecially late pin falls, or pins that are outa place.

Last Monday, the computers where messing up almost every frame, would count most strikes as 9- or a spare was a miss, talk about frustrating.  you dont get this with hand scoring.

Yes you do get mistakes with handscoring but if you check your scores or actually pay attention you normally catch them before its too late.

OMG!!! LOL I remember the fence. If I bowled real bad I would build a brick wall. Sort of miss those days. Stupid computers mess up to much.

Back when I was a young'n bowling, we had over head projector scorers, we were given a big plastic sheet with a different color for each game and a pencil and we went to town.

I've known for a long time.  The center where I learned to bowl didn't get computers till I was 14, where I bowled for my high school team never got them.  When I was 19 I was in a junior travel league, we walked into a house that didn't have computers, only myself and one other team member knew how to keep score. The look on their faces when they saw the over head projectors was priceless

Going way back,...I used to keep score for pot games,...12 guys bowling across 6 lanes,...$1 a game up to 8 guys,..9 and over $2...
what I really miss is the scorekeepers for the old PBA tournaments,..when the Quaker State tournament was held in Ft Worth I'd take vacation to keep score for the pros,..for free. Greatest seats in the house..!!!
