How would you react to this?
« on: January 02, 2004, 12:40:54 AM »
Say a guy on your team who bowls right handed decided that next year he was going to start bowling left handed on league - as a fellow team member, how would you react to this information?  I'm not talking high $ scratch leagues, but just a recreational handicapped mens league with low prize fund.  Just curious, 'cause I've been toying with this idea for a while now...  It would mean a drop of avg from mid 190's to probably mid 130's-140's starting out.

Honestly, I'd tell him to bowl right handed one night and left handed another night.  That way, he wouldn't hurt the team he's already on.

if you have some talent all that handicap will come in handy at the end of the season.

Not sure I follow you Porkchop... Are you saying to keep bowling right handed on my current team and join a different league to bowl left handed?

Yea I would tell him to practice left handed on his own time. Bowl right handed in league until you can get your average of 190 left handed.

I don't think I would appreciate it to much unless you hurt your right arm. You can't switch back and forth between left and right handed. You would have to start out the beginging of the year and establish a new average left handed. So you really wouldn't hurt the team that much. Just king of insulting to the other members of the team that you don't take them that seriously.

To answer your question 9, yeah.  As a matter of fact, we have a guy on my Tuesday night team that does that very thing.  On Tuesday night he bowls right handed and on Friday he bowls left handed.

Thanks for the replies!  There are not any physical ailments to stop me from bowling right handed.  I've messed around open bowling before and noticed that I can put down a decent shot left handed (I've thrown 5 strikes in a row lefth handed) but my spare game from that side is horrible.  I think there may be potential enough to match my right handed avg in a couple of years.

Then, throw in the fact that there are generally MUCH FEWER left handed people playing the lane and moving the oil (or absorbing it with their sponges) and I just wondered if my scoring potential would increase due to less traffic on that side of the lane.  I'm not saying lefties have it totally easy, but the thought of not having 9 other guys constantly changing (drying out) the lane every night is rather appealing to me.

More importantly though, I wanted to see how such a decision would affect my team psychologically.  The avgs on that team are 194, 191, 181, 163, 139.  I think I have my answer, and that would be to join a separate social league to work on my left handed game in a competition environment and keep bowling righty on my current team.  A couple of you mentioned you would feel I don't take the team seriously, and since I'm the high avg on that team, that's probably how it would come across.  Thanks again for the replies - if I follow through with this in the future, I'll let you know of my results!
