X-Hole Question
« on: February 26, 2009, 07:21:32 AM »
I know this is vague but generally speaking where is the general location of an extra hole placed in attempt to give a ball a touch more pop in the backend?. I drilled up a Dynamo with a negative pin layout (pin slightly to left of middle, right handed) and the ball needs just a little more in the back. Not even 100% if this applies but if so and anyone could help I would appreciate it. Thanks.

An x-hole will almost always make a ball start into its roll a little earlier, thus acting to defeat a strong skid/snap to a certain degree.

Regardless, I still use them to get a bit more "pop" at the back end.  I usually drill the x-hole 2" to 3" down from my PAP and the VAL and usually go with a smaller deeper x-hole for more snap (vs. a wider, shallower x-hole for more arc.)

Check this out.. I'm not a driller but learning about ball dynamics.. this is my theory.. as most of the weight hole tequniques I see are wrong in my opinion..ie .. the inside pap , on pap, past pap.. for most part they may work .. but the PAP has nothing to do with what the weight hole is doing..
it is distance from the pin that changes how the hole influences the ball dynamics..Ie taking weight out of the top of the core vs side of the core.. I am almost positive of this.. only thing I don't have a grasp on yet is how what side of the core changes what the weight hole does..

anyway.. for more pop.. my theory.. you get bigger/quicker/ sharper backend from putting the pin near the VAL.. now it isn't actually putting  the pin near the VAL that makes this reaction.. it is the fact that putting the pin near the val allows the fingers and thumb hole to be taking the "averaged" amount of weight out of the side of the core (6 3/4 from the pin)  This does two thing.. increase the rg which allows the ball to get down the lane.. and also raises the RG differetial which increases flare.. I don't know about this either.. but you would think increased flare would make the ball want to start up early.. anyway.. one of those two things or a combination of the two makes the ball get down the lane and then have a bigger backend..
so a weight hole that is 6 3/4 from the pin is the first step.. and I would think somewhere close to the thumb or in the Thumb quadrant. Depending where the thumb in in relation to the pin you could also go deeper with the thumb hole..
Keep in mind that you need to keep the ball legal.
What is the pin to pap of the ball??

check out this article by ebonite.. I think this is the best explanation and summary of weight holes I have read..

The strongest position for a weight hole to create more back end is to draw a line from the pin through the PAP and go 2 1/4-3" past on this line. Also going 6 3/4" from the pin through the PAP can create a similar reaction depending upon where it lands in regards to the PAP.

Going down the VAL will create a more overall, earlier reaction.
