We have wood and synthetic lanes.  What material, if any, do you see being used for lanes?  How about oil?

I'd like to see a slate lane bed (say 3/4 inch) covered in some cloth material (red felt?).  You would eliminate the need for oil, though chalk use might go up.  No resurfacing needed, just replace the felt.  Oh yeah, you could put up some really cool bumpers for the kiddies - say a coupld of inches of rubber, also covered in the felt.

Seriously, there has been an effort for a while now to produce an "oilless" lane.  Hasn't worked so far and I doubt it ever will.  The only change I can see is using different versions of urethane for the lane beds (aren't current synthetics made of some blend of urethane?)  Maybe a lower friction bed will come along to reduce the need for oil, but I don't think we'll ever do away with oil completely.
