USBC proposals.....thought.
« on: June 23, 2005, 07:26:01 AM »
After taking in all of the comments here and from my customers and fellow league bowlers, here is the conclusion I have come to.

It is being looked at very negatively from about everyone, from the pro shop owners, the house owners, and yes, the bowlers themselves in my area. As a pro shop operator, I probably stand to make money, from either the plugging and redrilling I would get, not to mention new sales in general to replace other orbs.

I do believe there is another way....I remembered back 5 years ago to my distributor's (at that time) trade show. They have a bowling tourney for the shop owners and employees for anyone who wanted to enter. I missed the cut by 2 pins, was plus 75 for 3 games(cut to top 16). While they were holding the finals, they also announced a second tournament, the "Lumber Jack" tournament. They put in super heavy pins on one lane. High game took the pot on the SAME EXACT condition I just missed the cut for the top 16 being plus 75. Enter as many times as you wanted for $5. I bowled twice, my Assassin hit like a 6 pound ball (threw 16 then). I shot 1 game in the 170s and the other in the 150s. The 170 game WON the pot.....55 pins less than my average with the regular wood.

Moral....maybe changing the pins would be easier. It wouldn't cost the average bowler anything (no need for a new ball/redrilling/plug now). The only item is how do we assure every house gets new pins? How do you make sure all of the old stuff is thrown away? What if a house, which is barely surviving now, does not have enough money to buy new pins?

I don't want to get in the middle of anything...just telling of an instance where heavy wood really made you hit FLUSH and not off pocket "hit em thin and watch em spin" type of strikes.

Pins that are heavy is a good solution, but it´s not the best. Players with low pound balls would almost never get a strike because their balls would hit like house balls. The result would be that they have to rise in ball weight and get a worse teknik because they can´t handle a heavier ball.

Fuhgeddaboutit.  Telling every center in the U.S. that they have to replace all their pins, not to mention the boxes of spare pins that they have tucked away in storage, in order to keep their certification, would be a complete non-starter.
