You ALL need Power Grooves!
« on: October 01, 2003, 10:10:19 AM »
A couple weeks ago, I drilled up a Chrome/Yellow Power Groove for a buddy.  He wanted something he could throw at the dry house in town.  It hooks more than he expected, but it also reacts better than he expected.  Last week he shot 805 his first league set with it.  Tonight he shot 300-789 with it.  It would have been 810+ if he'd have picked up the two ten pins he missed in the second game.  Then I think he had a spare or two, and a big open in the middle of his last game (or he'd have shot 299 the last one if the open would have been a strike . .).  17 of his first 18 balls were strikes, the only miss was a 10 in the first frame of the second game (which he consequently missed).  I think he ended up having 30 or 31 strikes on the night.  And this was all done without him throwing a single ball in practice.  He was asked to sub on our late league, and he has an early league tonight that usually runs too close to this league to be able to make it from one house to the other in time.  He skidded in at the beginning of the 2nd frame, and just started mowing them over.  Not to mention last week he shot 299-795 (although with a different ball).

So a recap of his last two weeks.  Last Monday, 805.  Last Wednesday, 299-795.  This Wednesday, 300-789.  One last thing, each score came from a different house, not to mention three different lane surfaces and three different patterns.  805 on synthetic, 299-795 on wood, 300-789 on Laneshield.  He's a control cranker, and he's ON FIRE this year so far.  He used the Smash/R for the score on the wood.  High performance balls, eh, who needs 'em.  Me, that's who, lol, the only balls I've been throwing this year are my Fuzes.  Not to say I need the high performance ones, they're just so freakin awesome.  Also at discounted prices . .

HAH!  I don't know ANYBODY now!

Being in adult leagues teaches you many things.

1.  You're not on top anymore, but there are a lot more people that suck worse than you do now.

2.  The myth about the youths having an easier shot is NOT TRUE.  I'd have an entire ring collection if it was.

3.  Drunk adults are a lot funnier than drunk youths.

At one point a little while ago, I lived up to the subject statement.  With the exception of carrying a Lind's Laser for a spare ball, my bag consisted of the following balls.

Power Groove - Burgundy and Gold:  slightly sanded
Power Groove - Lavender and Lime:  factory polish
Power Groove - Purple and Silver:  highly polished
Urethane Groove - Dark Blue:  factory polish

All 4 balls are drilled straight up and have a smooth and strong reaction with good carry power (the amount of hook was different just because of the surfaces).  At the time, I threw a high rev full roller on a deep inside line with a little swing.  Unfortunately, age and injuries forced me into a less aggressive style and the balls were setting up too early and coming in high with this new style.  I am currently throwing a DV8 Outlaw with a skid-flip drilling, but I still have a soft spot for the Power Grooves.

I was always very good with plastic balls (including five 300 games), and I always described the Power Groove as a reactive resin plastic ball with attitude due to it not having a central weight block.

It's worthwhile to have them spun on a determinator before drilling. They are asymmetric due to the flip bocks and most after being spun show to have the pin 1-2" further out then marked. I've spun 4 where that was the case.

I have a 14lb nib purple/black that I put back for a rainy day! I just didn't have the heart to drill it and put it in the closet! They are an amazing ball for being entry level. It use to be the first ball out of the bag on a ths!

Funny I just put up a post on my old time arsenal in this same forum.

I have no 800s!  Drat!

However, I AM sitting here looking at a Gold flecked powergroove fully plugged after a righty drill setting on my dining room floor hidden under the Dining room table from my Wife!

I won't tell her it is there!  Thank you.

I wondered what I was going to drill next.

Sincerely,

Luckylefty
PS if you can find a Control Zone, pretty similar reaction I would say.  Pushes well beyond first encountered friction like a Power Groove.  Similar High RG maybe weaker cover.  I have had more success on shots under 40 feet with it say near 38!  Misses the breakpoint on shots over 40 usually.

Well since its was someone else who brought this thread up I can say if you can't get your hands on a power groove, a Slingshot is an amazing ball for the dry as well.  Powrkoil is just so good.  I put it head to head with my Gladiator LE today and it crushed the competition in the dry house.  I have the Glad drilled longer and weaker and strength wise overall pretty close but carry wise Slingshot is in another league.  Ball hits amazing for such a low diff core.  Bet it beats the crap out of the new Twister (at least for this house) and got it cheaper as well.  No surprises on high friction conditions is awesome.
