Learned a lot tonight at the lanes
« on: January 06, 2004, 09:11:54 AM »
I got my Walter Ray Williams Jr. Secrets to Better Bowling in the mail today. Put it in and watched it a couple of times. Of course i got the urge to go bowling.

I went to the lanes i go to mostly. I used my original marks and i was hitting way left totally missing the headpin. I usually shoot 2nd arrow. So then i think well if i throw faster it won't break as much yet it still did. Then me being a dummy i start moving to the right and shooting to the right and still coming up on the brooklyn side. I was getting a lot of brooklyn strikes, but at the same time wasn't satisfied cause i wasn't hitting the pocket like i am suppose to do.

I am such a dummy. If your ball is going way left your suppose to move to the left and shoot more left, not move to the right and shoot more to the right.

The first three games i shot 130ish. I wasn't really worried about those scores cause i was moving around a lot and trying out different things. The 4th game I started striking but they were brooklyn strikes.  I rolled a 181, 4 pins above average. The 5th game I finally figured out the lane. Stand to the left of the center dot with my the edge of my right foot just covering up the center dot and aim just left of the 3rd arrow, 14board 13board. I started striking like crazy and shot a 215. Started off well in game 6 5 strikes in a row but the game went down from there cause i started missing my spares.

I started to let the weight of the ball carry my arm back on the back swing and not muscle the ball when throwing. That was big improvement for me. The week before my hand and wrist were wore out by the 5th game and I could hardly hold onto the ball.  I started to shoot straight at single pin spares 7pins, 10pins, but found it hard to hit them. I feel that when i throw straight my confidence is lacking cause i feel i have no control over where the ball goes as much.
I tried to throw straight as possible but the ball still hooks somewhat anyways.

I guess I'll have to get use to throwing straight at some of my spares and work on that.

I have a lot to learn when it comes to bowling. I don't have all the fancy terms, knowledge, and facts under my belt just yet. I did find it fun that i had to figure out the lanes. I don't want to go to a lane and be able to hit the same spot every week and know that a high score is just waiting for me. Although I didn't get a decent game until the 5th and 6th games, I figured out the lanes eventually. I should be able to do it a lot sooner next time, even on thursday when I will be going to a different bowling alley.

I would like to join a sport condition league. Challenging conditions are more fun.

If your just starting out the tape is good or if your just past that beginner phase.

Thanks for the compliment.
