approach
« on: June 13, 2006, 09:22:21 AM »
Looking for a little help on my approach here.  I went and got some coaching for a couple days by my old coach.  He said my steps werent straight and got me working on it.  My steps have caused my release to be about 6 inches or so away from my ankle which I am not used to nor like.  My question is, how do you fix a messed up approach.
I took video today and noticed my 1st step is straight, my 2nd one is a little left, 3rd is good again, then my 4th/ pushoff step my foot turns  about at this angle / and my slide goes to the left a couple boards.  I end up drifting about a board which isn't bad.  I just want my steps to go in a straight line and my ball close to my ankle again.  If anyone can help me out let me know.  I'd put video on here but hve no clue how to get it on the computer.

Nick

Most of the people I have coached with this problem are sliding away from their target instead of toward their target. Make sure you slide with your slide foot in the center of your body and that you are not falling off the shot, if you are then you aren't sliding properly. This may and probably is caused by the previous steps, but without seeing your foot work I can't properly tell you.

I know, I dont know how to get video on my computer or else I'd show you.  Camera doesnt work on DVD.  That's whats odd though, I have good balance.  I occasionally fall of a shot every blue moon when i get too fast but that's it.  I understand the 2nd step being a little left.  Tried to get it in my mind to slide towards my target but for some reason that alone is not fixing the problem.

If you are not having balance problems, figure out where you should slide and put a shoe cover to the left of where your foot will end up if you slide toward your target. All you have to do is don't hit the shoe cover when you slide.

One other thing might be that you are leaning to the right when you are going into your slide. I have a teammate that does this, it doesn't seem to matter how far inside he moves his feet, he still hits between the 15, and the 10 board at the arrows, with the same laydown point. If this is your problem, try to keep your posture upright and centered over your belt buckle. Make sure you are getting your ballance arm out on the second step and keeping it up, not letting it drop to your side.

The last thing to try is have someone watch you from behind (your coach or watch your video tape yourself). What you are looking for is your swing plane. Your swing could be starting infront of your body, falling back to the right and looping back toward your slide foot, but not far enough, or it could be pushing to the right, swinging back behind you and looping out to the right on the down swing. If you are having this problem, check out Ron Clifton's articles on swing plane in his archives tips 43 through 45:

how do you post video on here.  Make that how do I get video on my computer without it being on dvd?

after watching my video and after reading what CoachJim said, I believe the problem is me pushing the ball out too far right which is looping the ball behind my back.  I'll check that site and see what I get out of it.  Thanks.

Once again, just tell me how to get the video on here and i'll do it.  I'm pretty good with computers, just dont know how to pull that one off.

Do you have the video camera to fire wire cable that is supposed to come with the camera? If so all you should need to do is run windows movie maker and plug in the camera. I have loaded my camera on my computer before, but I have no clue as how to load it on the internet for display.

honestly I dont know if I have that cable or not.  I dont remember it coming with one but i'll have to dig through the box again and check.  Thanks.  btw, looked at that site and tried some of the things and they seemed to help when I practiced tonight.  Seemed to get my ankle closer to the ball.  Will have to check with more video of course.

JohnP- the original bricks huh?  Been numerous replaced since then and lots of people tripping over them as well.:-)  Personally love the school as it's a great place.

Going to dig more to find that stupid cable then will get back to you.

wulfpackbwlr -- When they installed the originals they must have put them in and taken them back out at least five times.  The joke around campus was "Well, are they laying down or taking up today?"  --  JohnP

Always seems as if they are repairing where the brick has become loose, broken, etc.  First thing I was told was never laugh at anyone that trips over the brick, it'll happen to you.....they were right.:-)
