You think scores are too high? Blame your fellow bowler
« on: January 05, 2010, 07:41:55 AM »
My dad bowls in a fairly competitive handicap league on Tuesday nites.  Over the last several months, scores have been very high.  Not a lot of honor scores, but a lot of people are averaging 10-15 (or more) pins higher this year over last year.

Well, a couple weeks ago, a few of the officers/captains went to the manager and asked if she could make the shot a little tougher.  They didn't want it to be US Open hard, they just felt scores were getting out of hand.  The manager said she'd look into it.

Her final response?  She's not going to change the shot.  She talked to the other leagues, they all like the shot and the scoring pace.  It's a 20-team league, no other house in the area can take them next year.

I would say 50% of the people in my (evening)leagues drink alchoholic beverages.

Early/senior leagues I would think the number is smaller.

I do believe because of DUI laws the amount of beverage has been reduced and maybe the percentage of drinkers.

Everyone complains they want harder shots, but when the center puts one down, the same bowlers complain its too hard.  If you want harder conditions, bowl in a PBAx league or organize a scratch league where the house will be down a harder shot.  I am sure you will get bowlers to join, BUT will they come back next year after averaging 20 pins or so lower than normal ?

This topic has been around for years and years and years and nobody has come up with a solution yet.  As someone already said, you can not go backwards and for the most part, most of you folks on this board would not want to.

The reality is that many centers get no significant interest in people even signing up, so it is disingenuous to claim that the decrease in average is the cause for the demise of something other than a THS...

PBAx and sport-compliant leagues were nowhere to be found in my area.  As far as I know, there are not any that are close to my second residence either.

As to the earlier comment about using older equipment...been there, done that...got bored with that as well.  20 year old pearl urethane and plastic were basically all I carried the last season I was in a league.  For the office party I described in an earlier post, I was also not using new equipment (the newest stuff I have was probably from late 2002 or early 2003, depending on when the SonicX was sent to me from Roto).

In the interim, the firm is picking up most of my golfing expenses...

Sorry,

But I for one am tired of all the whining, the shot is too hard... the shot is too easy...  Either bowl and enjoy yourself or don't bowl if you don't enjoy it...

This topic has been beat to death over the past year.

Then why today's bowler's are always complaining about how easy the shot is and why there are to many high scores. Why the USBC brings up the subject of the bowling balls. These whining bowlers should shut up and bowl. Have fun. I do not care who has a higher average that I. Put down what ever oil pattern there is during league time and let's have real fun. I like seeing the faces of frustration of the house hacks and sandbaggers. Seeing their egos go down the gutter. LOL!!!!

This Wahsam thing is like putting cork in a baseball bat.

Together with an easy oil pattern you put this also into the equation.

With these bouncing trampolines in the sides of the gutters of the pinsetter. Will have "bowlers" thinking they can out bowl Norman Duke or Walter R Williams any day.

And it is USBC approved

Now wasn''t the USBC complaining about the bowling balls and the scores??????

Give me a break!!!!

Keep in mind this product is in many bowling centers under a different name of lumber and bracing. It is an easy bolt in support system. Pros bowl with them as well. Either this product (wahsam) or the less expensive version (lumber) installed at the time of the lanes. Or any center can hire a carpenter to go back and ad support as needed. It's nothing new, just another way to make money off of a lack of knowledge.

The wahsam is a product for the lazy. It isn''t the product its the concept. It puts support under something that in most houses don''t have it. Many houses do have support and its from good carpentry. Wahsam or lumber its the same thing.

The difference from either is dropping an item (bowling pin) in the middle of your kitchen table where there is no support and then on a concrete slab. (if you watch football you know 250lb football players bounce on concrete slabs)

Scores are because a couple of things. Conditions, equipment and bowlers. If the sport isn''t a challenge for you then make it one. If you average 240+ in more then one house go bowl regionals. If you bowl 220 in one house one or two days a week go win tournaments else where.(out of city, out of state ect) If your beating Walter Ray week in and week out then you''ve done it all. Enjoy the pay checks.

…… you can't  add a physics term to a bowling term and expect it to mean something.

I know when I referrer to making them consistent I was saying .. Make them hard or make them easy but don't change the shot from week to week .. don't know if that definition got lost some place!

i could care less about the conditions UNLESS they are not cleaning the lanes. that is the only time i get upset. Im not a fan of paying a lot of money to bowl only to have my ball hook or not hook randomly because certain spots have more dirt then others.

shut it, just bowl. too many bowlers are cry babies

If you layout a certain pattern the first week it should be the same pattern every week of the season. That's what I'm referring to as consistent!

Hey where I bowl they wax the approaches inconsistently from week to week. Its scary and a challenge. It's the dumbest thing I've ever seen but it's a challenge.
People complain they are too tacky so some minimum wage J.A. gets out there and buffs all the approaches from gutter to gutter and the last 5 feet to the foul line. If you didn't have that week to week it's a nice place to bowl.

Easy shots isnt fun to bowl on. Sure its fun to shot some strikes and shot high. But when everyone does it, it kind of kills all the fun.
Shot 690-ish yesterday, i deserved maybe 580-600 of those points. The rest was the lanes help.

I have bowled with bowler25 for over twenty years now. He has never been one to brag about his bowling, even though he is very talented. He is not going to get into a pissing match, life is too short.   The following is straight off of bowl.com minus the association and league names so he can maintain his anonymity.
