First Lessons Ever!
« on: January 10, 2010, 10:38:45 AM »
So today the bowling coach for Ferris State, was giving free lessons, all you had to do was pay for the games you bowled.   I showed up at about noon and he was already giving tips.

So he had me throw a few balls to get a idea of how i throw the ball and then asked me what I wanted to work on...  I said my timing at the line, I know i am late and want to know how to fix it..  After about two games of him having me do what he was saying, I was already getting better timing at the line...  While talking to the other people there, I said probably the toughest thing was to unlearn the 10+ yrs of bad habits i had been doing.

It actually wasnt that tough to unlearn it, but to just get my "foot work"  working properly...

He also had me in my stance, stand up taller in my approach and take full steps, and losen up my arm from start of my approach to the finish and to not "hit" the ball till the end of my swing, cuz he noticed, i would cup my wrist to try to add revs to the ball...

I will say, once i got everything down, I couldnt believe how effortlessly I was able to bowl, and still keep my revs up.   I also increased my speed by about almost a 1/2 mph, too.  the Coach did say once, I am able to get good timing at the line, I'll increase my speed by about 1 mph..

I'll be honest and say, the 11$ i spent for the 4 or 5 games i bowled, and his time he spent working with me, was UNREAL and worth the weight in gold.  he did tell me he does this every sunday, and if i wanted, he can do some 1 on 1, early friday mornings.

And it's not that I would shy away from tips and helpful hints from guys who knew thier stuff, but it seemed like 90% of the time all they would talk about is getting me to lower my backswing...

this guy didnt care about how high my backswing was, just getting me to have good timing at the line...

The hard part isnt to change when there is someone telling you what to do. The hard part is to adapt these changes when your on your own.

A good coach that knows what he or she is doing does not make a lot of change's
Most bowlers just need a little tweaking. Look at Wayne Garber On todays show How many coaches would like to change his style. It works for him.

I did forget to mention, a friend called me at like 315pm and asked me to bowl @ 4pm on his league he was missing a guy.   So i put to use what i learned today and i did about average, went 198, 222, 217...

first game, i had a pocket 7-10 split, and another shot i got a bit fast, and left the 2-10 spit..

second game, i started X 5(split)spare X 5(split same one)3 then switched from my Xfactor Xtreme to my BarbedWire and went straighter and was clean the rest of the game with strikes from the 4th to 8th frames.

third game i had a open in the third, but was clean the rest of the game...

While i felt i was throwing the ball alot better, i know my accuracy is a bit off because of all the adjustments.  So now its just getting my accuracy back

Take advantage of it while you can. I've asked around my area and can't find anyone decent for lessons. I'm a 205 ave. hack and I just know I could bowl even better with some instruction....

Azus,

yea when i was subbing in the league later that nite, I kept on having to silently tell myself to stand tall, do this n do that.

I mean I'll tell silently keep telling myself to do all those things till they become second nature, but the hardest part is when I stop telling myself this and keeping myself from slowly going back to my old ways..

Second that, esp. when you are already a bit experienced and have a certain routine. "Bad" coaches tend to tell you you are doing crap and want to change everything from the basics. That can work for a beginner who did not have any training at all and bowls "naturally", but for harder cases I can hardly imagine that it would work - esp. on the motivational level for the trainee.
Good coaches or top level players I got to know try to sort out errors - and in most cases these are timing things, where IMHO many "user flaws" have their origin. Small things can do wonders.

I read that a good coach only tries to change 5%....or as little as possible.

...or just as much as needed, in gradual steps. A good choach will also motivate you and not tell you "You are doing crap - me knows better!".

dizzy and agroves,

yea i was very happy that, he didnt try to change my backswing, but to just "free" it up.

the other thing that really made me go WTF, was he said give me enough time to work with you and I'll have you playing up the gut like you wouldnt believe, and I mean like the 2-3 board....

Not that i cant play up the gut, but generally it would be like 5board.
