Young youth hand grip ????
« on: August 23, 2006, 03:23:58 AM »
My 10 year old finally said that he wanted to try to bowl.  So off we go with a house ball.  Conventional style.  As long as he stayed behind it he did well.  But it was to easy for him to come around the ball.  Do you think that if I bought him a ball and drilled it relaxed finger tip or semi fingertip it would help him stay behind the ball or is that too much to early.  Thanx...Doug

Doug

There are probably a series of things that cause problems at that age.  Going to a fingertip grip may just add to the problems.  On the other hand since he has no experience with anything it might also be good to start out that way and eliminate the conventional phase all together.  This is more common in adults than youth.  It would all depend on the person.  I would look at posture first before anything else.  Curing that may solve many issues.

Smash,  I was kinda thinking about starting him with something other than conventional that way there is not a switch in a couple years.  He is quite the student at everthing,  as soon as he releases the ball, he can tell you what he did wrong or right.  Buy the way I will be looking to buy a ball in the 8 to 9 pound area for him anyone know of any?   Doug

Doug, try ebay...this was where I purchased an used 8lb ball for my son.  These are some good undrilled balls on there.  Just type in 8 bowling ball and you'll see them.  Good luck!!

I put my 10 year old in a 10# ball she handles it well, I, too, am in the same delimea as I am getting ready to have their stuff drilled, I do believe since it is their first year of leagues I will be going at a minimum of relaxed fingertip to start them with.

We tried not to go to finger tip until they were 13 or 14 years old.

We felt there were two issues.

One is they grow so fast at times that during a bowling season they can out grow the grip. It is a lot easier to out grow finger tip grips than a conventional.

The second, which I feel is the most important, is that their hands are growing and don’t need the strain a fingertip grip puts on the hand.

When their spans are that short they are essentially hanging onto a point on the ball. Any turn not perfectly timed will cause them to spin around the ball with their hands.

Just let them have fun with it for now. You can get them their own ball but at this stage it is a personal pride issue with them more than a performance issue.

I had my first finger tip ball at 10.  It was a 12 lb danger zone and I never had any problems.  I personally would start with 10lbs however.  I was a very big 10 year old.  As far as hand problems I never had any and if the ball is properally layed out to fit his hand I don't see any problems arising either.

My nephew is turning 11 and he uses a Hot Rod Super Sport, 12 lbs. He is probably 4'9", 100 pounds. It's not too much.

My 11 year old and 13 year old both use 14lb and have thrown finger tip for about the last 3 years. Granted they have more of a chance of learning since they have grown up in a bowling center, and started bowling leaugues when they were 5 years old. Down here in Texas we have a youth organization called Grand Prix that goes along with our youth leagues. They bowl tournaments all over the state. If they had not started using a finger tip grip 3 years ago they would have never been able to compete. They start them young down here.

Thanx for all the input everyone.  It really helps me in making my decision HARDER.  My son is like his dad,  smaller in size with big hands.  I am 5' 9" but have a span of 5 1/4".   You know what the say about big hands .......................big gloves.    Doug
