Someting I've noticed (can't help but notice) on our sport league shot is that after about 10 minutes of practice and maybe 4 to 6 frames of game one there seems to be a sudden transition.  I have to move about 1 board right with my feet, maybe slightly more, or I can't get the ball to the hole.  After many 2-8-10's I'm coming to expect this.  Is this sudden carry-down (I assume that's what's going on - the only other thing I can think of is that I'm suddenly gaining speed) typical of a sport shot?  Strangely though, this seems to be the only major transition I see in a 3 game set (4 bowlers on a pair).  Once in a while I find that I have to move right, then, very late, move back left, but very rarely.

My comment is, very simply put, it doesn't appear that you can score on a sport shot without being very good at spare shooting.  And, shooting spares on a sport shot is, if anything, more difficult than throwing strikes.  On the THS I rarely chop the 6 off the 10 - on the sport shot I do it frequently.  But, while I convert maybe 70% of my 3-10's on the THS, I manage to miss at least that many on the sport shot.  And we all know (I hope) that straighter is greater at single pins on a sport condition.  On the up side of spare shooting I now know how to try for the 2-8-10 - lots of practice ya know.

PNH, you are correct that spares are critical to par-level scores on sport-compliant conditions.  What gets a lot of people in trouble is a) not being able to shoot spares to begin with and b) trying to loop the lane at them, especially multiple pin leaves.

The breakdown of the condition has as much to do with the persons on a pair as anything else.  Ideally, everyone will be playing them somewhat the same...however, sometimes groups play them differently than expected, which makes for some wierd transitions.

And I feel your pain at the 6-10...I've gotten real good at taking the 10 and leaving the 6 (or shooting just the 6 and missing it right AND staying on the lane).

Hey sounds just like my top hat league any more.

I just think it is defense oil!!!  That stuff stays, moves quick, then it's gone!  That stuff really sucks!!!

I have the pocket, then it's gone, then it's back!

I don't think transitions like carry down occur faster on a sport condition - I just think that we notice them more, 'cause the consequences are greater.

I have been bowling on a sport shot this summer, and have had to go waaaaay back for how I adjusted 25 years ago. A 1 and 2 move on a sport shot doesn't usually work very well!

Last night, practicing on one with a practice partner, I actually had a CLEAN 199 game on a sport shot. More satisfying as the 279 I shot 2 nights earlier on a THS!

When I left for our road trip last month, I vowed to use only my spare ball on spares - both right and left side. I have continued to do so on sport conditions. Although I'm not quite where I want to be on spare shooting yet, I'm getting very close. Sure makes it easier when you can trust the ball to do exactly what you expect!

I now have to practice doing the same thing on the THS. Then I'll feel like I REALLY know what I'm doing!
