Title: Your Physical Game Keys?
Post by: 802dave on May 08, 2006, 04:03:06 AM
What are your physical game keys (the things you must do to score well)?

Mine:
Rock solid slide leg - keeping a steady head through the release and followthrough

Roll the ball; rather than throwing it...

Seeing the Target!

Looking for hold area - takes priority over swing area.

Is it physical ? or Mental ?

Mental game keys is the topic for another thread, although "seeing your target" obviously ties in to the mental game - ties the physical to the mental.

I didn't want to hijack the thread, just wondered IF you could seperate the two...without one, is there the other ?

Good pushaway, feeling the weight of the ball pull on my shoulder (letting the weight of the ball swing my armswing) and sliding toward my target (creates a solid posting position). When I am doing these elements well I am bowling well. That is different than scoring well, I am still learning about todays technology and layouts.

Balance, balance, balance.  My arch nemesis has always been the old falling off at the line.

Plus, I've done some complete revamps in my game in the past month.  Slower ball speed, a few more revs, and better timing are all on my mind.  So, I really concentrate on my foot work (slow and even, 5 steps), my backswing (went from almost nothing to about shoulder height), and my hand position (a little more under the ball).  It's been a bit of a change, but it's fixed a lot in my game.  I'm much more consistant with hitting my mark, as well as the ball is much more predictable.

My mechanical keys:

BALANCE BALANCE BALANCE
Follow through the mark...get that hand up there.
Keep those feet slow.
Keep the shoulders constant (I open a bit in my backswing, but that's due to a lack of flexibility in my shoulder area - it was the reason my old backswing never went above about my waist.)
Make sure the hand is pounding through the ball, not pushing it at release.

Good Pushaway/timinig or I muscle the ball rushing my backswing to catch up with my feet.

Keep my upper body back. I have a tendency to lean forward and that also makes my release inconsistant.

Short 1st step (10-12"), 2nd step about 18-20", 3rd step, power step (10-12").

Ball in the middle of my chest in set-up.

Head over ball at finish (like the diagram on the Morich (http://"http://www.morichbowling.com/MosCorner/February2004/February2004.htm") site.

Keep my feet SLOW, I have late timing. (Beginning of 3rd step, ball is just at my side).

Figure out if it's me, the ball, or where I'm playing the lanes.

It's me, about 90% of the time.

Plant my shot, keep speed up, and come out of the ball clean.

Most importantly though, i have to plant the shot.

i have a complicated game, as anyone who's seen me bowl will say, so i have quite a few.
#1 Don't raise up the ball too high on the push away
#2 Keep feet slow
#3 Do not cock the wrist going into the backswing (i curle my wrist alot bringing the ball down)
#4 Do not allow backswing to get too high
#5 Do not drift
#6 Make sure to get around the side of the ball, and most important, keep the hand open
#7 During #6, try and keep the head and shoulders from jerking.
Its pretty nice looking when all goes as planned.

1) Slow feet, which = perfect timing
2) keep swing free
3) not to turn my wrist at bottom of the swing
4) watch my backswing (seems to be getting higher and higher)
5) Stop over thinking everything (i hate working in a pro shop and knowing so much dam useless info what messes me up!!!! )

Pushaway direction and shape. No lockout of elbow.
First step must stay small.
Feel the game and visualize the target line.

A lot... relaxed body, good warm-up as a basic.

In the delivery (stroker): Upright starting position, ball held in shoulder line. Good push-away to reach a straight elbow BEFORE the ball goes downwards. Upright body and square shoulders at the foul line. Finished follow-through and a trail leg that reaches the non-bowling arm's side. Good balance at the foul line to maintain release position until the ball has bassed the arrows (or even longer). The latter is a good sign for me that I did a good shot. Sometimes I struggle with the follow-through (cutting it off too early), but I re,ind myself of proper execution, try to focus et voilà: I am back in the strike alley.

Differnt things at different times.

If accuracy is off. Pushaway towards target usually helps.

No area for playing and balance problems. Slow feet and open up the tripod. Seems to give me more room for missing than anything else I have tried.

Getting the ball down the lane. Keep more behind it and dont come around too early.

I just seem to get stuck in a rut sometimes depending on who is on the lane with me. It seems to knock off my timing and these few things help fetch everything back into sync. "IF" I can spot it soon enough.
