2nd week of the season, I picked up my first ever 7-10 split
« on: September 12, 2007, 12:15:20 PM »
I think that was a bigger adrenaline rush than anything I have ever done in bowling. I have always wanted to get one, and I got it the cool way: I banged the 10 with a hard straight spare shot, the 10 flew out of the pit and took out the 7 pin while airborne.

I shot 279 my first game last night with a ten pin miss in the first frame, had the first 5 strikes in the second game and left a pocket 7-10 split. I was so pissed I threw the ball as hard as I could and the ten pin came back out on the deck and into the gutter in front of the seven! Oh so close! nice pick up though.

Great Job! I've got mine back in 1978, at an air force base at Bentwaters, England
they built a new 24 lane bowling house,(better than the 6 lane one), and probley since they where they were new, I hit the 10 hard, and it bounce out of the pit and roll and took out the 7!

I wonder if it the lanes are still there?

The one time I picked up the 7-10 back a couple years ago, I kicked the 10 out of the back and it rolled across the deck and slowly knocked over the 7.  Very cool.  I've had the 10 or the 7 pin come out of the back and go across the deck many times, but only that once when I had both pins standing at the same time!

The methods of pick up 7-10 splits.  A lot of people think the 7-10 pick up is nothing but luck.  I guess you can say some luck is involved but there are a couple of methods if used that can increase your chances at it.  Yes, throw as hard as you can but throw with a purpose.  First of all, be aware of what kind of action you're getting off the back stop.

Method 1:  Dead back stop (pins hit and basically lay down in the pit).  Try and slap the 7 pin (10 pin for lefties) off the side wall. You want to hook into the pin (or give as much angle you can) to hit dead center on the side of the pin slapping it against the side wall which will bounce the back across the lane knocking out the pin on the other side.  I've found this actually harder to do than the next method but if the back stop is dead trying method 2 will only get you a dead pin in the pit.

Method 2:  Lively back stop (pins bounce all over the place).  Cut the 7 or 10 into the back stop.  This is like shooting a split.  For a righty think of a 6-8 split.  You want to cut the 6 into the 8.  In this case you're just off set the pins so the 6 become the 10 pin (reverse the pins for lefties).  I've found that you don't have to be as accurate as in method 1.  As long as you get a good cut on the pin you can get a favorable bounce off the back stop.  I've picked up way more 7-10 with this method.  Actually I've only picked up 1 7-10 using method 1, a lot of close shots but only 1 to go down as you have to be able to get the 7 (10 for lefties) to bounce off the wall and go nearly straigth across.

Congrats on your rare pick up.

Hey DonSVO, Congrats on making this tough shot!!  Good job!!

I bowl with a guy who picked up the 7-10 three times last year, he used method #2 as described by ELPW above...lucky and good!
