Tommy Jones
« on: January 07, 2008, 01:40:30 PM »
Did anyone notice that Tommy Jones did not wipe his ball off after he hit the thumb hole with his rosin bag?

I know league rules you HAVE to wipe the ball after using a rosin bag in that manner. But does the PBA have the same rule?

On Edit:
Could any of his opponents said something about it?

If you watch him, he wipes it on his shirt afterwards. Hard to catch if you dont watch.

Maybe because  pros go through so much equipment they don't really care?

But I wonder - if there is oil on your ball, will it affect the shot?  Will the ball hook less?

Yes he wipes it on his shirt.  The rule is that you cannot have a foriegn substance on the surface of the ball that is why it has to be wiped off.  If not you will be putting rosin on the lane as the ball rolls down the lane effecting the shot.  I had an argument with a guy this year and had to break out the rule book to show him this.  Tommy meets the rules also I noticed one of the other bowlers this week doing the same thing I think it was Danny.

Guess I am going to have to watch the show again, cause I never caught it. Then again, I was not looking for it, I was looking for a towel, so he very well could have been doing it.

No, the PBA has a tougher rule. On the PBA Tour you're not even allowed to APPLY rosin or powder to the surface of the ball.

http://www.pba.com/file_upload/members/rule_book.pdf
11.7.6 Foreign Material on Ball Surface. All foreign material (such as rosin or powder) may not be applied directly to the surface of the ball.
Penalty for 1st Offense: Warning
Penalty for 2nd Offense in a Season: Bowling Conduct Violation $250 (PBA Tour)
$100 (Senior and Regional Tour)
Penalty for 3rd and Subsequent Offenses during a Tournament: Disqualification

Unless that's a new rule I have never heard that. Tony Reyes was notorious for pounding tons of resin on his ball then would hardly wipe it off. Of course it's going on the lane surface.
