Youth Disqualifications
« on: August 08, 2006, 11:56:11 PM »
We have a league coming up that's 2 person teams. It is not USBC sanctioned. There are no awards for scores, placement in standings, etc. You can choose from 9 free games a week, a bowling ball up to $200 or a 3 ball bag (which everyone can choose from).

I'd like to bowl on it with my 13 y/o cousin, but when his dad called the USBC, they said that he would be disqualified from youth activities if he bowled in an adult league. Somehow I don't think he gave them the details. He can't win money on this league.

Anyone know if he would be disqualified from youth activities? I was leaning towards no.

I think that because there is not prizes given to actual accomplishments, you should be ok in having your cousin bowl.  It is just like all those disney ball leagues or sponge bob ball leagues, where all you do is participate and you get the same thing whether you finish first or last.  I used to manage a center and those leagues were filled with kids so I doubt that the proper information was given to USBC.  That was 3 years ago, but I doubt it has changed.  Keep bumping this post and I am sure that you will get a more official answer soon.

The Youth Rules have changed in the past 2 years. I'd suggest you go to Bowl.com and check out the Rule Book on Youth. It's hard to give an answer without knowing first hand all the details of the league. I'd suggest you read the rules as you know the details. Sorry if it sounds 'snippy', but I'd sure hate to give an answer and someone else read them differently and the kid is messed up for it.

Yeah. Looks like based on the FAQ of the rulebook:

"175. Our center is starting a league that will give NFL jackets to all members who remain the full 30
weeks. The jackets will cost over $100. Can my children join with me without violating their USBC
Youth membership eligibility? Yes, since receiving the jacket has nothing to do with bowling skill, score or
position standing. Actually, the league members are paying toward the cost of the jacket in league fees each week.
The same holds true for ball, bike or merchandise leagues as long as they follow Rule 400 and every bowler
receives the same item."

Thanks for the insight guys. Didn't even bother to read the book ;P

I remember I wanted to do a have a ball league back about 10 years ago, but they said I couldn't since "The value of the ball was over $150."  Next year, they gave the same ball out to our Junior League as prizes...

I still would double check with usbc because in the last month or so there has been revision to rule 400. I believe something along the line a youth member cannot receive anything over the value of $50. Call usbc and make sure the youth status does not get violate.

It looks like they did revise Rule 400.  Section B states
quote:
Youth membership may be suspended or denied to any youth bowler who bowl, substitutes, or paces in any bowling activity where any of the participants are:

2.  Awarded any cash, bonds, gift certificates or merchandise prizes.  Trophies, medals, ribbons and certificates (symbolic) may be awarded.

There used to be an exception that allowed merchandise as long as everyone received the same thing.  The exception is no longer there.

I thought I read that giving away balls, bags, or shoes is Ok as long as it is personalized i.e. engraved, embroidered.

Well I can answer this for you guys.

My Teusday night leauge is set up JUST like what se7en described. We have youth bowlers in this leauge and they are able to bowl as long as they do not recieve any cash or prizes over a certain amount of money. They CAN receive a ball, shoes, or 3 ball bag as long as they were paying for it while paying their weekly fees for the leauge.

The USBC rep I contacted said that everyone has to receive the same thing, but eluded to go into detail whether or not a choice of items violated 400 b2. Waiting to hear back on clarification.

Everyone has the same choices, so I would assume it isn't a violation. It's not like a person gets a ball if they place 1st to 3rd, bag for 4th to 6th and free games for the rest.
