- DESCRIPTION: Set your game on fire with the QZ2 Backdraft for light to medium oil. The Quadfire core is engulfed by the Fire Pearl and Solid Black MOTIVator-Z Reactive Hybrid shell.

The MOTIV QZ2 Backdraft is another one of Motiv's new Pearl Cover Stock bowling ball.

The QZ2 Backfraft features the all new unique MOTIVator-Z Reactive Hybrid Cover that is extremely clean through the heads yet strong enough to hook on carry down along with a very strong continuous backend motion.

Motiv Bowling Balls located on

www.motivbowling.com

I drilled two of these balls up and took them to the Mens Travel League Tournament in the Dallas, TX area.  Because the ball was design for medium to dry lanes I decided not to bowl with them and placed them on the bench.  I called them rookies on the bench waiting to play.  I started with my Cruel and I left 3 flat 10 pins in a row.  My team members were laughing cause they were striking.  I brought the QZ2 Backdraft (Rookie) off the bench and I struck out to finish with 257.  My next 3 games were 268, 245, 257 to total 1028 for the four game set.  The next week same house for Texas Men's State Tournament.  How lucky can you get.  The Rookie got the starting job and I shot 279 out the gate.  I finished 1st and 2nd 28 out of 30 brackets and the second set 278 out the gate. Finished 26 out of 30 brackets.  This Rookie gave me a very even and smooth transitions along with a hook on the backend I couldn't believe.  This type of back end reaction resulted in very high scoring.  In addition, I bowled the San Antonio Association Bowling Tournament and finished 6th out of 144 bowlers, not bad for the Rookie.  I used a stacked layout in max flare position for heavier oiled conditions and the out of box surface finish plus a Rico layout on these balls.

The awesome part about the QZ2 Backfraft was the setup type reaction that works well playing a more direct line on heavier fresh oil patterns.   This is great when the lanes are fresh.  The other good part is after the shot breaks down the ball will not burn out to early and not carry, although I had to speed the ball up just a little and stayed in the same zone.  I really loved the predictability of this bowling ball, with it’s ball motion.

I will never leave home without them.

You can get more details about this bowling ball in the link above.

COMMENTS

Likes: This is a welcome addition to the QZ line of bowling balls. Stong midlane and most total hook of the four balls in that line up make it an ideal match for any fresh medium lane environment. I have had success with this piece on the PBA Viper playing around first arrow, Cheetah firing is straight up 1-2, and on just about any medium-light volume pattern when I need to move in and belly the ball more.

Dislikes: This piece really matches up well on the fresh patterns I encounter b/c the backend move is smoother due to it reading the midlane more than other QZ balls. That being said I can run into problems getting the corner pins out when the backends become spotty or some carrydown occurs. This is when I will go to one of the other QZ releases as they are all straight pearl coverstocks. They go through the first half of the lane much cleaner, and therefore retain more energy for a more skid/flip look and more angle through the pins.

 Lane Condition: 40ft. THS

Ball layout: 5 x 4.5 cg with pin 2 inches above midline

PAP: 5 1/8 3/4 up

Rev rate: 327

Left handed

Comments: The new Backdraft is now my go to ball. The Motivator Z hybrid shell fits perfect on this ball. I find to be a perfect combo with the original QZ1. I find this ball to work best when the Qz1 starts to read a little to early on me to be able to stay in the same zone just with the New Backdraft. I find this ball to be about 3 boards stronger with a more continuous motion downlane with the Backdraft. Yet another great piece by MOTIV. Keep up the great work!

COMMENTS:
This is one of the most surprising MOTIV bowling balls I have ever used.  This new hybrid cover on the backdraft clears the first part of the lane with ease, as does the original QZ2.  You really see the difference between them by the earlier, and stronger drive of the backdraft.  I have noticed you have a little more "bump" to the right, and a little more "tug" to the left with this new cover.
I have noticed that this ball works great on fresh shots, either on synthetic, wood, or an overlay on top of wood.  Able to play straight up the lane, or swing out to the dry, and it will recover with enough energy to carry out those corners.
My opinion, this is a must have ball.  Motiv has done it again.

The new MOTIV QZ2 Backdraft is on FIRE !!!!!!!!!

The Backdraft uses the same Quadfire core design as the previous QZ bowling balls. This core usually gives me medium revs through the entire lane which helped me get the ball through the front of the lane. The Backdraft's hybrid 2000 abralon box finish gave me a little stronger read in the mid lane than the original QZ2. I was able to get a 4 inch flare with the OOB finish. The back end recovery was smooth and very controllable as I rolled the Backdraft during a tournament this weekend on a reverse block oil pattern. I was able to play a tight line around 18 to 12 (right-hand) as I worked the middle part of the lane using the range finders.

The versatility of the QZ2 Backdraft will lend a hand to most bowlers on medium oil patterns and the new MOTIVator-Z Reactive hybrid coverstock is a must have in your bowling bag.

The QZ2 Backdraft is MOTIV'S upgrade on the popular QZ2 Blue.
MOTIV has given this mid price winner,a new hybrid reactive cover.

The new QZ2 Backdraft still clears the heads nicely. But it has a
better midlane reaction than the QZ2 Blue.
The Backdraft revs sooner than the QZ2.The hybrid cover greatly
helps in this area of the lane. The stronger midlane read of the
Backdraft helps to control the backend reaction, allowing this
ball to be less jumpy at the backend.
The ball motion from the midlane to the end of the pattern is more
continuous and less flippy. The reaction at the breakpoint is heavy
arcing and not as skid flip as the QZ2 Blue.
The total hook of the Backdraft throughout the entire lane is more
than the QZ2 Blue.
The Backdraft gets about 1-1.5' less length than the QZ2 Blue.
The Backdraft is more forgiving, which gave me more miss room
to the right and still get good recovery. And if I missed left,it would
hold the line.Giving me good tug area.
The Backdraft is a great control ball. This ball is now my THS ball.

The Bowler:

Left handed

Ball speed = 17

Rev Rate = 400

PAP = 5 ¾, 3/8 up

The Ball: Motiv QZ2 Backdraft

Ball Specs = 15# 2.55 RG .043 Diff

Layout = 60x5x65

Axis Migration with layout = 3 ½ inches

Surface = 2000 grit polished

This Medium oil monster has a beautiful hybrid cover with fire red pearl and black, with gold Neo-Mark graphics. The cover helps pick up the midlane about two to three feet sooner and a smoother midlane then the other QZ balls. The Quadfire core with my 5 inch pin to pap layout has an axis migration of three and a half inches from my hand to the pins. This keeps the ball in check through the heads and allows the ball to uncoil in the mids and backend. I was shocked how the ball just doesn’t quit when it hits the break point; it just seems to keep hooking. I will be using this ball as a benchmark ball for every lane condition from the house shots to sport shots, but its home will be on medium to medium light oil. I haven’t had any carry down issues with the ball in all my testing and have been able to stay with it though over six games. It doesn’t seem to burn out your line near as fast as stronger balls.

In short if you’re looking for a great medium oil benchmark ball look no further, get a QZ2 Backdraft.

The QZ2 Quadfire Backdraft is a fantastic ball for Medium Oily to Medium Dry lanes. The real star of the show is the Hybrid Coverstock. I find that it picks up very well in the mid-lane, and makes a strong, confident move on the backend, without overreacting to the dry. I typically pull this ball out of my bag on league night in the 2nd game, just after the lanes have broken down just a little bit. I can carry consistently from the deeper inside angles, without the ball being too skid-flippy.

I find that the ball is also very effective on medium Sport patterns such as the Chameleon. When other balls “float” a bit in the mid-lane, the box finish the QZ2 Backdraft gets through the heads, and gets just the right amount of traction where I need it. Because of that, I feel confident that I can get really aggressive with my ball speed when I need to. Similar equipment I’ve used in the past would have a tendency to blow right through the breakpoint on sport patterns when I got too aggressive. If I need a ball to fully take advantage of a pattern opening up, this is the one I most often choose.

The QZ2 Backdraft is a very versatile ball, at a great price.  If I were allowed to use only one ball in a tournament/league situation, I’d be hard pressed to find a better ball to bring with me.

Really like this ball alot !!!   Drilled mine 60x4x45 w/P2.5 hole just to make it complient.  The Backdraft has one of the best continuations through the pin deck I've seen from a Motiv ball.  Absolutely destroys the rack.   Did a typical 18 out to 6/7 on our THS  (wood lanes) w/box finish & I could not miss.  Unless I threw it wide & hit 3/4 board it came back screaming everytime.   Really appreciate the ease at which the Backdraft revs up.  Excellent midlane read & strong motion off the pattern.

Decided to hit it w/2000 pad & try it in our Sport League.  43' pattern.  Amazed at the reaction & drive it gave me.  Had to square up alittle more than when I threw on the THS but had not problem getting it to make a solid move off the pattern.  And talk about messengers . . Holy Cow does this ball throw the pins around.

This has got to be one of the best mid-prices ball going.  No Questions!   I will be drilling another one.  Until then,  stay Motiv-ated ! ! !

Drilled up my Backdraft with a 4x5 layout. Took to the lanes and compared this QZ2 to the Blue and Black QZ2. Right away I noticed that the Backdraft is noticeably stronger than the Blue and Black by at least 4 boards.

Where my original QZ2 (blue and black), tends to be a bit more snappy, the Backdraft has a great continuous arcing motion that drives through the pins. This is a ball that I can definitely see coming out of my bag first.

Now the center did inform me, at the time of taping, that they had just switched to a new oil and were still working out the new pattern and this was a little lighter than what it will be.

Likes: This ball is so good in the mid lane.
This is another GREAT Motiv ball and has replaced my SR2 as my benchmark ball. I get such a good read in the mid-lane and the ball is very clean through the fronts. I love all the QZ balls, but this new cover retains it's energy longer than the QZ1 Purple and kills the pocket. What is most impressive is the way it goes through the pin deck with very little deflection and finishes in the middle of the pit. I have great sets using this ball, I know you will too.

MOTIV QZ2 Backdraft

 Coverstock:

The QZ2 Backdraft bowling ball features a Red Fire Pearl and Solid Black MOTIVator-Z™ Reactive Hybrid shell. It provides a strong but controllable reaction on light to medium oil.

 Box Finish:

Adding fuel to the fire, the 2000 polished finish has an increased Ra value to read the lane slightly earlier and cover more total boards than the original QZ2.  Still, the QZ2 Backdraft gets through the heads cleanly and displays excellent backend motion.

 Inner Core: Quadfire™

The proven Quadfire™ inner core produces an RG that stores energy for the backend reaction and a differential for controlled track flare. The 15# ball has an RG rating of 2.55 and differential of .043.

 QZ2 Backdraft drilled:

Axis Point - 5" over 0" up/down

Pin to PAP- 4" – pin slightly above and right of ring finger
CG Placement - lower right quadrant, left of pin
Balance Hole – no balance hole was needed
Basic Drilling 4 X 4
Surface Preparation - Out of Box (2000 Polished)

Review:

The reaction from this ball is just what Motiv advertises, a little earlier read than the original QZ2 through the front part of the lane. This is due to the hybrid cover and factory finish (original QZ2 is 4000 polished). The midlane roll has a smooth transition into the back part of the lane for a nice controlled motion to the pocket. Since this ball is suited for light to medium oil it is my first choice when playing on typical house patterns. The attractive two-tone red pearl and solid black cover along with the gold pearl lettering makes this ball a stand out from the rest of the pack … but the color isn’t the only attractive feature, it’s the striking ability that this ball contains that will keep this ball out of your bag.

Well first off, this ball is one of the prettiest balls MOTIV has come out with, it brings the attention to the eye and is very presentable for many customers by just having it on display. This Hybrid cover makes for a clean and predictable reaction with a very versatile surface options. Although clean through the front, very strong back end ball. This is very much a benchmark ball for any user, and when complimenting other balls, fits in nicely with any arsenal. I have an SR2 drilled similar, and is a very mid lane rolling ball, The Quadfire fits right in next in line when the SR2 is a little too early for what I am trying to accomplish on the lanes. This is for sure one of the favorites of mine, lots of hitting power and not much quit in it, all fight, can't beat that in a bowling ball. I have used this ball playing up the lane and going around them as well, and either option is acceptable, with great results. The MOTIV buzz and excitement is bigger than ever! And will only get stronger, with makes like this ball and all the other great bowling balls MOTIV has to offer, it is a true no brainer. Being a staff member of MOTIV is a new and exciting experience, the QZ2 Quadfire Backdraft makes me want to just go out and bowl just because of how good these balls roll, this one is a true winner, get your hands on one and I promise you will not have a single complaint.

All in all, if you’re looking for that great medium oil ball to start with, the QZ2 Backdraft is the perfect answer!

Likes: The Backdraft is a very versatile ball which can be used on a wide variety of conditions. Compared to its predecessor, the blue/black QZ2, it clears the heads with ease, while reading the midlane stronger, with a predictable, continuous motion through the pins. I drilled mine similar to the b/b QZ2, pin under ring finger with a small cg kick, and find the Backdraft to be the perfect compliment...makes a good benchmark ball, as it reads the midlane so well and isn't too snappy off the breakpoint. this ball would be a great addition to anyone's tournament arsenal, and especially to anyone curious about the MOTIV brand...

Bowler Stats-Ball Speed 17 MPH Rev Rate-App 300 Axis of Rotation-30 to 60 degrees Axis Tilt 20 degrees Right Handed

The QZ2 BackDraft is designed for light to medium oil patterns.  The ball performs as advertised. It pushes through the heads with ease  as on fresh shots as well as heads that are getting thin on the oil.   The ball does little reving in the midlane, but as soon as the ball hits friction it begins to read  When the friction is found you can visually see the ball rev (thanks to the  Neomark graphics) up making it easy to identify the current breakpoint. The change in direction is not as sharp as the Cruel LE but still plenty strong enough to generate sufficient angle into the pocket to carry.  I am able to use the BackDraft  playing both down the boards, swinging it out to the dry, or playing  deep but not far right. The ball recovers very well making an aggressive  move when it encounters friction.  When the volume in the heads is above the norm, the Backdraft will "squirt" through the breakpoint at times and also will leave weak corner pins when the ball is not able to complete the transition to a roll. As  long as the Backdraft does not have excessive head and midlane oil it is a very  effective ball.  In comparison to the original QZ1 and QZ2 the ball picks up a  little earlier (due to the hybrid coverstock) and the total hook is about 2 boards more then the original QZ's.   I have been able to play straight up 5 as well as playing deep and swing it wide and still carry.

The Backdraft does not seem to have a surface preference as it reacted well on all surfaces.

If  you use this ball as designed on shorter or lighter oil patterns, it is a  very effective ball. To throw it on a fresh THS or a longer Sport  Condition with a few games will take very good ball speed and rev rate control,.

The Backdraft gives Motiv a piece of equipment for Motiv believers to step up  from the the original QZ's without having to go to the SR2.. I'm very colorblind but I've heard from multiple bowlers that the  ball is very pleasing to the eye and will give it good shelf appeal.

The NEW QZ2 Backdraft from MOTIV features the same core as used in the previous QZ ball releases. The difference between this and the original QZ2 is the coverstock. The backdraft uses a hybrid version of the coverstock which will provide bowlers with more friction causing an earlier reaction as compared to the original QZ2. I chose to drill my Backdraft with a 55x3 7/8x65 layout. This places the pin 1/4" below my ring finger (right hand) and places the cg about an 1" above my thumb kicked out 1/2".

I conducted some practice on the Team USA Stockholm pattern (34 ft) and found the ball was smooth through the heads with a strong continuous move down lane. The layout mixed with the hybrid cover allowed for a smooth but strong read of the break point without any over/under type reaction. As the pattern transitioned, I moved left with the target and was able to maintain the same shape and angle into the pocket. As compared to the blue/black QZ2, which tended to be a bit more angular for me off the hook spot. I have kept both at OOB surface for this session.

I drilled the QZ2 Backdraft 50 x 4 3/4 x 70 with the pin underneath my bridge with no additional hole needed. Throwing this gem on a league pattern is definitely a winner with those medium to high rev rate bowlers, or when they begin to transition for those who need to begin the night with a stronger and more aggressive bowling ball.

The QZ2 Backdraft is also ideal for Medium to Short Oil tournament patterns. With the new MOTIVATOR-Z hybrid coverstock, combined with the Quadfire Inner Core allows you to be able to play a variety of angles, benefitting all types of bowlers.

The Backdraft, in comparison to the SR2 covers the same amount of boards, but allows you to create more angle through the front part of the lane. And in comparison to the QZ2 Blue/Black, it gives you more read of the mid lane, and a more continuous roll through the pins, where the QZ2 Blue/Black may be too clean through the heads.

QZ2 BACKDRAFT

HYBRID Cover stock

2000 With Power Gel Polish.

This is the ball that I have been looking forward too for some time now.  Most league and Tournament conditions will dry out very fast. Normally, the transition phase will happen between games 1 and 2.  Generally, in a 6 Game Tournament block you only use your High end balls 1 to 2 games.  As the lanes start to Dry out you will have to shift down to a less aggressive bowling ball.  This is where the new QZ2 BD comes into play for you.  The Key is the Hybrid cover stock that Motiv used on this ball.  Changing from a High end ball to a Mid-line ball will sometimes change the shape of your entry angle. Changing your entry angle shape will hurt the carry you had with the more aggressive ball. Most High end balls roll in the mid-lane and which creates carry. This is what the QZ2 BD does at the Mid-price point.  The QZ2 BD picks up in the mid-lane like a High End ball every time with a strong cautious roll thru the pins. This QZ2 will glide thru the front part off the lanes with ease because of the pearl resin mix. The QZ2 BD is ready to handle any transition phase in any league or tournament you will bowl. Sometimes a pure Pearl or a straight Solid ball cannot handle transition well.  The QZ2 Backdraft will not be that first ball out of my bag. But, I do know this it will be the ball that saves my butt and makes me more money every time I bowl. Get Motivated!

When this ball arrived I had very high expectations. I like the entire QZ line and have had a lot of success with the QZ1P and the QZ2. I was not disappointed. As expected being a hybrid the  Backdraft has more mid lane than the QZ2. But it still has the backend  reaction that bowlers are looking for. Hitting power for  the entire QZ line is great and the Backdraft is no exception. Especially when you consider the mid level  price point. The cover stock handles changes very well. At 2000 with Power gel  polish this ball can handle med oil. I had a chance practice with the Backdraft on a few conditions. Where it  really started to show what it could do was when the shot started to  break down. This ball would glide thru the heads and make a strong turn to the pocket. Where the QZ1R or QZ2 blue would sometimes push thru the break point the Backdraft will just make the turn and keep going.  I can see using this ball for a long time. Only the extremely oily or  very dry lanes will keep this ball in the bag.

Review:

The QZ2 Backdraft by Motiv is quickly becoming one of favorite bowling balls. My first three games off the press were 245/269/279 for a 793 series on a 40ft typical house shot. The MOTIVator-Z hybrid coverstock helps provide a clean read in the heads and provides a nice strong angular move in the backend. I really like using this ball when the lanes start going through transition and I have to start playing the inside part of the lane. The backdraft gives me the angular motion in the backend without losing midlane control. This ball gives you alot of bang for your buck. Another great ball by Motiv. Get MOTIVated!!!!!

QZ2 Back Draft

This is the 3rd ball of my initial MOTIV pieces drilled as a MOTIV Staffer. The Back Draft is very clean through the front part of the lane and then consistently reads the remainder of the lane. When I say “consistently” I mean, I never saw the ball jump too much (over react) or skid too far (under react). I would consider the ball to have a strong arc for the reaction shape (I did a milder pattern compared to my Raptor P7 and Sigma Tour).

My first session with the Back Draft was on Kegel’s Easy Street (Light volume) with a synthetic surface. This ball forced me to play a little straighter than I normally would on a fresh house pattern, but without sacrificing any carry. Other balls at this price level are allergic to carry down, but the Back Draft kept a strong arcing motion even with the carry down late in the session. Consistent ball reaction late in a set is a piece that will get a lot of use for me this season.

You can see my video here:

(Video footage for this ball was taped after I had bowled on the lane for about an hour)

It’s hard to come by mild equipment that is also suited for tougher or sport conditions, but the QZ2 Back Draft will fill that void. It also completes an unbeatable trio right now all from MOTIV, between my Raptor P7, Sigma Tour, and QZ2 Back Draft I can compete on any condition!

If you are looking for other MOTIV equipment, go to my reviews on the Raptor P7 and The Sigma Tour!

If you haven’t drilled a MOTIV piece, you’re missing out!

What's not to like about the QZ2 Backdraft.  It gives such a clean read in the heads and a strong reaction on the back end.  It provides a very consistent, predictable reaction and continuous roll through the pins.  The Backdraft is also one of the best looking balls put out by Motiv.  The Neomark graphics on the ball actually provide a great visual of the breakpoint as the ball hits friction.  Even though a recent injury has forced me to throw 14 lb equipment, the Quadfire core punishes the pins just like the heavier equipment.

The Backdraft is another excellent ball by Motiv. It has a very clean reaction through the front of the lane with a controllable mid lane roll leading to a strong back end reaction. This ball continues its driving action through the pins for superb pin carry. I have used this ball on various conditions from dry to a medium oil pattern at 35 foot and a medium oil pattern at a 45 foot pattern and on both wood and synthetic surfaces. With having such a clean predictable reaction and a strong finish this is now the first ball in my hand to start off a tournament or league. I can quickly get a good read on the lanes and know what Motiv ball is right for the condition. Since I bowl on wood lanes where the heads break down fairly quick, the QZ2 Backdraft allows me to hold onto my line longer and score higher. On top of being such a great performing ball it has a very appealing look.

I am right handed and throw the ball at 17mph. The ball is drilled 95x45x3.875 with no hole and was left at the factory finish of 2000.

Likes: This ball was something I had seen thrown by others and really wanted to try for myself.  With my speed and rev count being a little higher I wanted something to roll and pick up a little sooner but not lose backend reaction as the lanes transitioned so I would have another option if my Primal Impulse became either too flippy or flattened out just a bit since it is a skid flip ball by design.  After some discussion from trusted reps. I decided to go with my layout of choice to get the rolly reaction desired and still see the push through the heads with ease that I have gotten with all my other Motiv balls.  This ball is a hybrid cover and with the layout I put on it, the length and recovery are as good as any other ball I have thrown from Motiv.  I have not had a ball that reads and transitions as smooth as the Quadfire QZ2.  What I like the most out of this ball is that even with a slightly less ball in your hand, you do not lose anything when it comes to pin carry.  Not only do these balls react so smoothly, but they hit soooo hard and the pins just dance!

Great Ball MOTIV!

Dislikes: That I didn't drill one sooner!
