MOTIV’s latest release, the Sigma Tour, is going to be loved by a broad variety of bowlers. The Sigma Tour takes the proven Sigma core found in the SR2 and puts the new Atomix cover stock around it. This ball at 15 pounds has an RG of 2.47 and a differential of .047, and one sweet cover stock. The intent of the Sigma Tour is to provide a skid / flip reaction.

I put a tall pin layout in my Sigma Tour, 55 x 5.125” x 25 with the pin very high above my ring finger, and no extra hole needed after drilling. For me, the Sigma Tour lives up to the hype and skates through the front part of the lane with ease and goes through the pins like a saw. With the low RG core and the Atomix cover, the ball is not sensitive to oil and loves to read the friction. This ball is going to be the ticket for me in league and when the lanes begin to transition during tournaments and I need a ball to get around the corner harder.

This ball is something special in the MOTIV line, and will definitely make a lot of noise this season. In comparison to the Raptor P7, it is more length with a stronger backend reaction. Comparing the Sigma Tour to the QZ2’s, when the QZ2’s sometimes go too long, or do not have enough in the backend, the Sigma Tour still reads the mid-lane while storing enough energy to make the corner and send the pins flying.

Take a look at my Sigma Tour in action:

This is the next great thing coming from the Motiv brand.  I drilled this ball last week, pin over my ring finger approx. 3 3/4 from my axis with CG in the palm, with no hole.  The ball with this layout gets great length and has a strong response off the back end. As the lanes broke down and I was able to move in the ball got even better building up some hold in the middle the ball was still able to recover strong in the back end and plow through the pins with a perfect entry angle.
Comparing the Sigma to the Cruel LE, for me it was cleaner and more angular than the LE but still plenty of ball, it will be a great fit in my arsenal this season.  I think that this ball is definitely going to live up to the hype.  Releasing September 2nd.

I layed my MOTIV Sigma Tour out with the pin on my midline, just below my fingers and kicked the CG out 4 inches to the right of the center of my grip. Had to put a weight hole  to bring back into USBC specs. I am a very high rev rate player and this layout for me, causes a lot of flare and a ball motion that is the most continuous that I have ever seen. Here's a video of 2 different Sigma Tours, both thrown on a house shot.  This ball gets down the lane great and keeps going on the backend!  Great addition to the MOTIV line.  Take the length of the SX1 and the backend of the SR2 (with better continuation on carrydown).

Ball One Specs:

Surface: OOB 2000 Wet Sand
Layout Before Drilling: 50 x 4 1/4" x 80

After Drilling because its a symmetrical ball: 90 x 4 1/4" x 80 w/P2 1/2 hole, Pin Down

Ball Two Specs:

Surface: 4000 Wet Sand w/ Power Gel Polish

Layout Before Drilling: 35 x 5 x 50

After Drilling because its a symmetrical ball: 80 x 5 x 50 w/P2 Hole, Pin Up

Review:

The Sigma Tour by Motiv brings back the already proven Sigma core with the all NEW Atomix Reactive coverstock. I drilled up two Sigma Tours and I must say this the perfect benchmark ball. The SigT rolls the through the heads super clean and provides easy length without sacrificing midlane control and then provides incredible continious backend motion. Now, to compare my two Sigma Tour's. My OOB 2000 wet sand SigT picks up in the midlane sooner and provides a more smooth continuous backend motion. My 4000 abralon with polish SigT provides much more length and a more angular backend motion. This ball is very versatile and can easily become the first ball out your bag! Sigma Tour is set to release September 2, 2011. Get MOTIVated!!!!!

Sigma Tour

This was another one my initial MOTIV pieces drilled as a MOTIV Staffer. This ball presents a reaction that I haven’t seen from any manufacturer before! I wouldn’t characterize the ball as a skid/flip ball, but it does have the backend of one. Skid/flip balls get down the lane very easy and tend to have uncontrollable hook on the backend. For bowlers with more ball speed or that may like to play straighter skid/flip balls don’t come out of the bag too often.  The Sigma Tour gets down the lane but picks up stronger in the midlane than a skid/flip ball, yet still maintains a very sharp backend motion. On medium to heavy oil conditions the Sigma Tour will really open up the lane by being able to play in deeper and still being able to really turn the corner!

My first session with the Sigma Tour was on Kegel’s Easy Street with a synthetic surface. On this pattern this would be my first and only ball needed for an entire set.  I just slowly moved in as the set progressed and it created a great entry angle. Playing that deep I will typically see a few corner pins, this was not the case with the Sigma Tour.

You can see my video here:

This will be a benchmark ball for just about anyone. It is strong enough to throw on the fresh, but is clean enough and can corner with deep angles on a lighter or broken down condition. The out of box surface is in between, allowing you to add surface to make it stronger overall or add polish to make it longer and stronger.

If you are looking for a ball to transition to after the Sigma Tour, look for my review on the QZ2 Back Draft!

If you haven’t drilled a MOTIV piece, make this your first. You won’t be disappointed!

LANE CONDITION

Length: 41ft & 39 ft

Volume:

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): 41 ft THS; 39 ft Sport

The MOTIV Sigma Tour is the latest release building on an already proven successful core design seen previously in the SR2 and SX1. The Sigma Tour takes the proven Sigma core and wraps it in the new Atomix cover.  The Sigma Tour is designed for more of a skid/flip type reaction.

I recently drilled two Sigma Tours, the first with a 45x4.5x35 layout. This places the both the pin and the cg in a stacked position. I’m a right hander with moderate rev rate and this layout provides me with the length and a sharper move off the break point down lane. I have thrown this ball on a 41-ft house pattern as well as Team USA Seoul pattern. On the both patterns, this layout is dominant. The ball glides through the heads with ease, reading the mid lane and providing a strong move off the break point. As the house pattern broke down, the ball didn’t disappoint. Carry down didn’t affect the balls ability to turn the corner. Typically bowling balls will seemingly lose their reaction while fighting the carry down leaving flat corner pins. The Sigma Tour plowed straight on through without sacrificing hitting ability. The second layout I used was 65x3.75x35. This layout places the pin ½” right of my ring finger and the pin 5/8” right of the mid line. This particular layout is calmer on the house pattern off the break point. The layout alters the reaction from more skid/flip to strong arc. As seen with the first layout, this ball handles well in carry down and won’t over react on the backends. On Seoul, this ball gave me a strong continuous look off the break point driving through the pin deck. Overall, this ball is a must have for any bowler, especially a MOTIVated bowler!!

This ball is something special in the MOTIV line and will undoubtedly make noise this season. Comparing the Sigma to the QZ2 line; if the QZs have too much length and not enough drive for the condition then switch to the Sigma Tour. It reads the mid-lane well while storing enough energy to turn the corner and destroy the pocket.

The MOTIV Sigma Tour is a medium oil ball that goes long and has a strong, but controllable back end motion. It glides through the heads, hits the breakpoint – then makes a strong continuous motion through the pins. This ball gives me the perfect 1-2 punch with MOTIV’s other new release the Raptor. The Sigma Tour is now my “go to” ball in the 2nd to 3rd game on my house pattern. I’ve found that this ball seems to smooth out the pattern for me… unlike other “skid/flip” balls that I’ve thrown in the past which can over-react to friction. Since the downlane move is so controlled, it is also highly effective on sport shot patterns when the heads burn up a bit and I need to move inside. My carry percentage is excellent with this ball, and I feel like I leave fewer splits due to the fact that it drives through the pins, rather than a “slashing” motion that I sometimes got with other angular equipment I’ve used in the past.

Here is a link to the Ball Reaction Video that I made for the Sigma Tour on the Kegel Main Street Pattern:

I highly recommend the MOTIV Sigma Tour!

COMMENTS

Likes: One of the biggest backend offerings Motiv has produced to date. A lot of this can be attributed to the new Atomix reactive coverstock. For those of you who loved the SR2, you can expect an additional 3 feet of length and a more pronounced move down lane. This is an excellent piece when the bowler needs to move left (in my case right) and play more open angles through the front. I really like the 4.5" pin up Sigma Tour as a ball down off of my TR2's and that is my progression personally. When the TR2's start bleeding energy too early I can switch to this piece and know I am going to get length and recovery down lane. I have also drilled another one with a layout that my friend Justin "Wi" recommended. 35 x 5.5 x 40 w/ a P3 hole. I left this one as it came out of the box. This one I have a feeling is going to be a house shot killer! :)

Dislikes: As with any ball that is meant to be cleaner in the front the bowler may struggle to match up early on the fresh oil environments. If this is what the bowler normally sees I would recommend using a slightly stronger pin placement and/or touching the coverstock with a 1500 grit pad to start. Fortunately with the lower RG Sigma core design I don't think this is going to be a very big issueas it does read the mid lane very well.

The Bowler:

Left handed

Ball speed = 17

Rev Rate = 400

PAP = 5 ¾, 3/8 up

The Ball: Sigma Tour

Ball Specs = RG 2.47 Diff = .047

Layout = 80x5.5x40

Axis Migration with layout = 4 inches

Surface = 4000 Polished

The Sigma Tour is one of the most exciting balls for me going into the fall season. This ball is my secret weapon for tournaments and sport leagues. The SR2 was one of my favorite releases from Motiv as an all-around 80% ball. Now Motiv made that ball even better with the Sigma Tour. The Backend takes over where the SR2 left off. I’ve found the Sigma Tour to be ultra-versatile on most of the oil patterns I’ve used it on. In the words of our tour rep, the Sigma Tour is a moderate response/moderate friction producing ball. I’ve found that to be true which makes this ball the new 80% ball. This ball picks up with that Sigma midlane reaction but continues with a stronger than expected backend continuation. Smooth and continues is how I could classify the overall reaction. I haven’t seen a bowler that the Sigma Tour wouldn’t have a place in their arsenal. This ball embodies the Skid-hook-continuation reaction that is accentual for consistent ball reaction and pin carry. I was able to play up 5 on a 37 foot challenge pattern, up 10 and all the way into 5th arrow on house shots without a lack of backend. In fact the more I moved in the more it kept coming back even harder. The most surprising thing for me was being able to retain length with a low RG ball. Get your hands on the TOUR tuned house shot killer ASAP.

The MOTIV Sigma Tour Review
Ball-15lbs. 3oz. top weight-3.3," pin-3.0',
Drilling-70x45@41/2",With a P2 hole,1" deep,with 1" bit,

Inner core name-Sigma,Type-Symmetric
Coverstock name-Atomix Reactive,New cover from MOTIV
Box finish-2000 wet sand
15 lb ball-RG2.47.Diff. .047

My information-Right handed,Ball speed-15 mph average,
Rev rate-280 average,Axis rotation-45 degrees.Axis tilt-15 degrees

Type of lanes tested on-9 yr.old Anvilane,3 yr. old Pro Anvilane

http://www.motivbowling.com/

The Sigma Tour was designed for medium oil. Most bowlers will use
it as their benchmark/first ball out of their bag ball.

This Sigma Tours medium low rg core and new Atomix cover lets
it lope through the front part of the lane, which helps it store the
energy for the breakpoint. The smoothness through the heads is
insane. The smoothness through the heads will let you keep the
ball straighter through the front part of the lane to start.

The Sigma Tour has a very strong midlane roll. This reaction is so
defined and strong for a ball that gets through the front part of
the lane so easy.
The key to the Sigma Tour is the energy stored for the downlane
movement. The Sigma has a medium response to the friction at
the breakpoint. The breakpoint shape is very a very heavy arc. That
has a long and strong continuous movement.Yet controllable
and predictable.
When the lanes transition from fresh to open, the Sigma performs just
as well. When you need to move deeper the ball corners with ease.
Carrydown doesn't give the Sigma any problems. The Sigma shines
out a variety of patterns and conditions. The Sigma is a must for everyone.

MOTIV has taken a giant step with their last two releases;the QZ2
Backdraft and the Raptor P7.With the release of the Sigma Tour, they
have filled the gap between those two.If you are looking for a three ball
arsenal, you have it here.Throw in the RX1 Silver for dry lanes and spares
and you have a complete arsenals for most conditions.

Are you looking for a new “GO-TO” ball that gets through the heads, is strong at the breakpoint, and still very predictable? Look no further! The new Sigma Tour from MOTIV is your ball.

This is one of my initial MOTIV balls that I drilled as a new MOTIV Staffer. I am a high speed/high rev player.   I drilled this in a stacked leverage position with a 4inch Pin from PAP. This places the pin to the right of my ring finger and the CG is in a straight line below the pin (stacked). Due to the CG being kicked out from my palm, a weight hole was necessary. I put a hole in the lower vertical quadrant and half way between my vertical access line and thumb.   This is one of my very standard drill patterns that I have used my entire life. This drill pattern typically gives me medium skid with a strong backend motion.   I must say “SUCCESS!” This drill pattern works perfectly for me with the new Sigma Tour, if not better than other balls I have drilled in the past.

I have now used this ball on 2 patterns (Typical House Shot at 40 feet and Kegel Boardwalk at 35 feet). On the THS, the Sigma Tour got through the heads in a very controlled motion, hit the mark and gave a very strong motion to the pocket. I was never concerned about over/under reacting. If I hit the dry a bit early, it still held and did not overreact. Same went for pulling the ball a bit inside towards the oil; it was strong enough to have the traction in the oil necessary to still hit the pocket. As for the Kegel Boardwalk, this pattern is typically played near the gutter. I was able to score “ok” near the gutter, however, this Sigma Tour allowed me to move my feet a little bit more towards the middle and play around the track area (12-7). Typically on a short pattern, you will have a lot of over/under in this area as if you miss out towards the gutter, it won’t recover, and if you pull it, it will make a strong move to the opposite pocket due to the short oil. Not with the Sigma Tour!  I could miss out as it was strong enough to recover, and I had a little “tug room” as the ball was controlled and held towards the pocket.

I am excited to continue throwing this ball as it is very versatile and gives me a strong, predictable motion. I would classify this as a medium ball and can be used over a wide variety of patterns and lengths of oil.  If you are a league bowler bowling on a Typical House Shot, this piece of equipment would give you a ball to use the entire evening. If you are a tournament bowler bowling over a wide variety of patterns, this will be your “Go-To” ball and probably used the most out of your entire arsenal.

B.K.A  The House shot KILLER !!!!!!

The Sigma Tour by MOTIV is the most angular back end ball I have "ever" thrown and it smashes the pins upon contact. This is a medium oil ball that is super smooth through the heads and turns into a beast when it comes at the oil of the pattern. This is one of the best MOTIV balls in handling oil carry down and still maintaining a skid/flip reaction. The Sigma has approved upon an already successful core design in the previous SR2 and SX1. The main ingredient of this ball is the medium low rg core and new Atomix cover.

This is my Bench mark ball out of the bag and once you roll one, you will see what I mean.... MOTIV is moving in the right direction with its new line of products that I would highly recommend -QZ2 Backdraft, Raptor P7 and now the muscle of the group- The Sigma Tour.
