Title: 3 ball arsenal
Post by: thewhiz on February 18, 2015, 02:01:58 PM
If I were to build a 3 ball arsenal what would be recommended.   From a heavy oil ball to a light oil ball.  I already have a ascent that works great for dry.

Gotta include the shock!  Maybe something pearl beneath it, and something solid above it?

my favorite for a 3 ball is jackal, rage, shock and since you got the apex already it seems set to me.

You can't go wrong with Joker-1's suggestion. If you are including the Ascent in your three ball limit, then maybe the Jackal and Forza or Sting. If you are rev dominant, then perhaps skip the Jackal and go with the Vengeance or Primal as your heavy oil choice, the Shock, and your Ascent.

Motiv basically covers everything for all styles.

The house I bowl at is on the dry side, so my 3 ball has been Primal Rage, Sigma Sting and Ascent Apex.   Although in most cases lately the Sting and Apex get the most play.    Would like to try the Jackal, but I don't see enough oil.

Jackal, Vengeance and Shock.

I have yet to have much luck with anything asymmetrical. I don't know if it's my more up the back release, low revs, or higher speed. But I just haven't found one that I can get to turn the corner very well, nor am I interested in spending more money to try one when a symmetrical cored ball seems to work just fine.

So if I went with #2 Vengeance and #3 shock. What would you suggest for a heavy oil ball, a Vengeance or Rage with a strong drilling and a lot of surface?

As a slower ball speed, low rev guy, I'm looking to have a three ball arsenal that really fits my game. I currently have a Primal Rage that works well for me on heavier patterns. On the lighter side I have a Tribal. Does the Revolt Vengeance fit comfortably in the middle of those? I too, have found little success with asymmetrical stuff. I also find I don't have enough ball speed to get solid stuff to work well for me, so I always look for pearl balls that cover most conditions I normally see.

How often do you see soup? I don't..

Current balls from Motiv 3 ball lineup....

Revolt Vengeance
Venom Panic
Ascent Apex

I do love my Sting and that would be in the middle of those instead of the Panic.

I have low tilt and medium rotation and less or close to 300 rpms.. I'm guessing the ascent apex is a dry condition ball?

Yes, cause a solid color works so much worse then a multi-color ball.  ::)

Performance should be the most important factor, color is superficial.

Wow didn't know people threw motiv.

Its big in the Midwest right now.  The ebonite and Brunswick brands are seriously dying out in the Midwest.  It used to be all about dv8, and before that hammer.   Now its either storm or motiv...and nothing else lol.  You'll have a one off throwing Brunswick, and a c300 fanatic here and there...

Colors very important. Performance also important but not as much. I gotta like what i see going down the lane. Might just be me.

Ok let me step in here... We've seen trolls over the years come into this site and create havoc. Ken isn't one of them. He's a local kid in my area and has bowled with ppl I know recently in a tourney. I never met the guy personally, but guys he bowls with are good ppl.

He isn't as seasoned as we are on here as seen with his post. But, maybe he is sincere about his preference in ball choices - looks over performance. It's not the norm, but we know many ppl are differnt. Also, he hasn't called anyone out nor teased anyone on here. So don't be insulting to a newbie in this site.

We should be cool with one another cause we all are bowlers. Some of you bowl with a towel in your back pocket, or keys hanging on your waist side, and think pin up 1" above the fingers will make a difference. Nothing wrong with that ;)

In all honesty, who cares if someone is choosing a ball because of color or look. There are so many balls that do the same motion anyway, might as well just choose the one you like the best out of all of them.

Ken, do you lick windows when you ride in vehicles?

Idk what this means either but it just sounds like a weak insult

And even wear white belts when they bowl, now, there IS something wrong with that.

I have a confession, when I compared the balls on the Motiv website and was trying to figure out a 3 ball arsenal, I was trying to figure out 3 balls of different color... I also really wanted to make the Rage a ball in my arsenal because I've never had a red ball! Oh my GOD, I too car about color! But you have to admit, when you go to the ball return and your ball is very dark in color and so are 5 others it gets annoying.

I am finding it very disheartening to read this thread. Xrayjay, I understand what you are saying, and I am not, hopefully, going to make any personal attacks on anyone. But unless you want to be a beginner bowler, the kind who open bowl once in a while and maybe join a league....color doesn't mean a damn thing. If you take this sport seriously, and I don't mean PBA, Regionals seriously, but seriously enough that you want to compete to the very best of your abilities, color should be the very very very last thing you worry about. And if you aren't taking it seriously enough to be the best you can be, then you have no business on a website like this complaining about any companies color choices, or lack thereof. The number one thing you should be looking at is the performance of the ball, and does it compliment your game and give you the desired reaction you are looking for on the specific conditions want it to. Simple as that. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't....and color makes up about 0% of that. No wonder bowling is dying....there are actually people out there who would rather buy a ball based on color rather then is it the right ball for the conditons...and these people are probably the first to be back in their local pro shop complaining because the ball doesn't do what they want it to....but at least it looks "cool" going to down the lane.  ::)

I see your point your trying to make but there are plenty of balls out there that have peformance to handle a specific shot.  Yea imma rookie who prefers cooler looking balls but don't doubt those cool looking balls they kept me alive in many tournaments. I'm not saying I always choose color over performance. I am saying I never gave motiv a shot because of it's color. Storm roto Brunswick provide everything I prefer.

I would love to bowl in your league Milo lol... I throw a pink strike ball (bloody cross), a pink spare ball, and I have a pink shoe lace on my slide shoe......I do this for two reasons.

1. BLoody cross is damn good ball.
2. I lost my GF to breast cancer 12 years ago, she was 31.

I had a pink panther and pearl panther, no one said a word when i shot 700+ the first night out....

Ken is still a rookie and hasnt gotten to the point yet in his bowling career to either realize or care about other things. Thats doesnt make him bad, just means he is thinking different. My only advice would be if you want to continue to grow and compete, than dont let the color of a ball deter you from buying it, the "ugliest" ball may just be the ball that matches up to you the best, never know if you dont try.

As far as Motiv goes, there are more and more people giving them a try. I was a 20+ year Storm and Roto guy who wanted to see what else worked, I do that now and then, not that I had any issues with Storm/Roto at all...still love them and have in the past always gone back. But curiousity got to me again and I tried Motiv and have been exceptionally pleased. The Venom Shock is one of the best balls Ive ever thrown, ever. If I didnt try it, I would have missed out on something very special for me. That ball between pots, pot games and tournaments has almost paid for the whole new Motiv arsenal I currently have....So just keep your mind open to trying different things....Storm/Roto makes great equipment but they are not the only ones...

Yea, that does tend to shut them up doesn't it? LOL

I loved beating those guys with the Pink Panther. It was so in their heads it just made it easy. I would leave it in the bag until shadow was over, then pull it out for the first shot and start striking.

And Xray, them boys might want to "string you up" with all that pink! LOL

Lots of holier than thou in this thread. Performance is of course the biggest factor, but you can find 10 balls that cover the same performance and reaction for any need.

Not saying I choose based on looks first, but there are enough options out there to avoid Bad Ass or Brute if I think the name/logo/colors aren't too my liking.

Oh just because a ball is ugly doesn't stop me from buying one. I Bought a slingshot black n pink  for an amateur bowling tour tournament and shot 278 290 248 to qualify and eventually winning the 1500 $ prize fund. I'm just saying due to motiv balls not appealing to me I never gave them a shot when I can get a ugly* performance ball from a company I trust ya know.

I'm in Stockton and there is a lot of Motiv used here. Genesis has a decent following and is growing, probably because most of the guys involved are from this area. Likewise with Lord Field/Lane Masters as Lane Masters is made here.

Storm and Hammer are still the most popular brands though.

Hey, don't diss my Pink Panther.  ;)

I like the way it gains attention, because it's distracting. If they're focusing more on my pink ball than their own performance, that's only good for me….

As far as the topic, if you're looking for 3 Motiv balls, I'd look at the Forza and the Revolts. From what I've seen in others throwing them, you can't go wrong.

Personally, I'm no longer on the Motiv bandwagon. A few years ago, I threw 2 300's in a row with the solid Ascent to win a sport shot tournament. Convinced that the company was the greatest thing since sliced bread, I went crazy buying a complete Motiv arsenal. I found that their overall line-up was OK, but frankly I wasn't overwhelmed with the totality of their performance.

Still, for anyone curious, it's worth giving Motiv a shot. Their equipment is unique and might work out for you.

I ain't dissin! I have a Pink Panther that I still throw from time to time. I did recently trade the two un-drilled ones though.

It's a good ball and as it's been mentioned here before, if that thing had Lighting Bolt on it(instead of a Saw Blade), it would have been sold to a ridiculous number of bowlers.

As for Motiv, I have gotten to the point that it's almost all I use. I have a couple of Genesis balls that I have put up good numbers with, but nothing else works for me like the Motiv stuff.
