Title: 3 balls for S/D Nationals
Post by: J_w73 on June 21, 2017, 03:37:29 PM
Which 3 Motiv balls would you take to Vegas to bowl the singles and doubles National pattern?

Any surface recommendations also?

Jackal LE
Jackal Ghost
Covert Revolt
Revolt Havoc
Venom Shock
Sigma Sting
Paranoia
Ascent Apex Pink/Green
Rebel Tank
Arctic Sniper

I would take the Ghost, Revolt Havoc/Covert Revolt, and Paranoia for doubles/singles

Paranoia with surface (500/1k), Tank Rampage would be better than the Rebel, but if that's all you have the Rebel, and probably the Ghost again with surface..

So what is the overall thought?  Early and strong, Early and smoother, and then something longer with more of an angular back end?

I was thinking of the rebel tank just so I could use it as a spare ball as well.  I could probably put some more surface on it too.

Just a question. Why no Jackal LE? or Why the ghost over the Jackal LE.  Not saying your choices are wrong, I am just wondering the reasoning.

My best reaction was a Covert Revolt at 1000.

bring the ghost and sand it down to 500 maybe even 360

I'm in Vegas and ended up bringing my Ghost at out of the box.  I will more than likely bring it down to your suggestions.  I also brought my Jackal LE that is at 4000, probably take that down some as well. And I brought my Paranoia.  So all these balls usually have decent backend for me.  They are all just longer than the other.  I was going to bring my covert but the age and way it is drilled, I didn't think it would do enough for me. It might have been a mistake because it is the ultimate control piece.

So changing surface is allowed during practice?

In Vegas, I found a medium strength smooth hooking ball worked best for team.  A little stronger skip flip ball for minors. Move left for minors and stay between 2nd and 3rd arrow for team.

Are you kidding? Seriously? A Ghost at 500? They're not THAT tight.

I just went down to the arena and I agree that they didn't look as tight as I thought they would.  The balls seemed to be hooking quite a bit if you had slow enough speed and decent rotation.  A lot more movement than I thought I would see. Seemed like breakpoint at 8 or 9 but don't be left of 10 or you were beak or left of head pin.. Slow shots right of 8 would still make it back..but any speed and it labored to turn the corner.

Yes, it is now...  You don't need less that 500 (someone said 360) but it's not that they are tight its that you want the ball to stand up a little sooner to control the back end motion.  You don't want anything that will go dead sideways off the end of most sport patterns until they open up a little at least.  On the fresh it's nice to have the surface to help the ball bleed energy early and have a smoother transition..  That's why I liked my Black Hammer reaction out there so much.  Got the ball to start early and it was super predictable going to the pocket..  Also, you typically want to play the pattern from front to back not side to side.  Want to get the ball to slow down and transition in the right spot of the lane, and a lot of people had been having success with that with more surface..

Talk with Brian in the Motiv booth, very knowledgeable about what is going on out there.  I talked with him quite a bit while there and gave me some good ideas.  I had 1872 with 180 my last game of singles.  Not a monster, but very happy with it.  That was the problem I had with urethane though, didn't strike a ton, but left very manageable spares, think I was around 83 clean and 3 opens came in the last 4 frames of singles.

So I brought the completely wrong equipment. The balls did what I thought as far as length, but I should have brought the covert and taken the surface to whatever allowed it to read the lane the best. Whoever said controlling the backend is the key, was right.   All the balls I had were just too much backend to start.  The backends were flying to start,  but you still didn't have miss room to the right if swinging it, but playing straight up the outside the ball wouldn't hold either.   The pattern was tough. Don't miss left and don't miss right.  Move left too quickly and you just never get your ball to the break point and you are beak or left every shot.  But throw it hard enough to get it out and it more than likely wouldn't come back.  I think I was throwing it too soft to start so it made me move left and that was bad.  I started throwing it harder and was able to move back right and hit the pocket pretty good.  Was pretty flush 7 in a row one game but then carry was another question.  Left 3 nine pins and a good amount of 10 pins.  Had a solid 8 in there too.  I might have done better with the 3 other balls I was going to take.  Covert, sigma sting, rebel tank.  Who knows.
