Beast Mode w/Sigma Tour & Retirement
« on: March 26, 2014, 01:35:58 PM »
So it was awesome for several hundred games back when I drilled it.  Paid for itself several times over, had some great scores with it, but pretty well destroyed the ball.  Sat in the pro shop for the better part of 7 or 8 months just waiting to go on the used wall whenever we needed to fill a spot.  Heard about Jayhawk's Detox in January, they invited me out to give it a shot, and I thought if there's any ball I want back, it's this one.  Turned it into a brand new ball, shot 300/800 the very next week, and since then I've averaged nearly 250 between two different shots at two different houses in two different cities, with a 796 last Thursday, and then fresh off another trip through the Detox Monday, 772 last night.  This is without a doubt the best consistent run of big sets I've ever had.  I've had a couple good weeks before, but 4 out of my last 8 sets have been over 750, I've only missed 700 ONCE, and that was a 687.

Alas, I think I'm going to have to retire it.  It is BEAT UP, cuts, dings, scratches, the track is extremely worn, it's going to need a DEEP resurface, and I'm not sure that's going to help.  Based off my other topic and a conversation with my Motiv staffer "co-worker," I think I'm going to drill a Tribal for a bit weaker look when I run into track burn at the tournaments.  I can't decide whether to go Sigma Sting or Primal Rage to replace the Tour.  I realize that the Sting would be the most similar, but if I went stronger, I could avoid any overlap, and the Rage isn't TOO strong.  My co-worker suggested the Sting as he felt it is more versatile, and I think that's the direction I'll probably go, but I drilled a Rage lefty and it's so good it's making the decision really hard.  I'm going to continue to bowl tournaments righthanded, but bowl my leagues lefthanded, so it's not like I'm just drilling a couple balls for a months worth of tournaments and leagues.  Yeah I'm obviously still scoring great with the Tour, but I really don't think it has much life left in it.

I have a Sigma Sting and it's the best ball in my bag. I also have(and love) the Primal Rage. No other ball I have owned turns the corner and charges to the pocket like the Rage when it matches up to the condition, but it's not near as versatile as the Sting for me.

The Tribal is a very nice step down from either of them.

On a different note, I have a 15# Sigma Tour NIB. Since you work in a pro shop, we might be able to work out a deal.  ;D

My experience with the Sigma Tour is it is a weaker than the Sting.  If you want a ball close to the same strength, then perhaps the Venom Shock, (as long as the core differences don't affect you too much) and even then I bet the Shock is stronger.  The Sigma core is very good, but the difference in covers is night and day.  Fusion pearl was a huge upgrade in cover compared to the Atomix cover on the Tour.

Haha Milo, I'm gently "encouraged" to throw newer equipment that we can sell, but going super beast period looks just as good. Regrettably, I'll have to pass . .

Being that it's going to be tournament bowling, I'm more interested in more versatility, so I'll probably end up going with the Sting then.  The Tour is already just a tad on the weak side for me, but I think that makes transition easier to work through, which I think is responsible for the big sets.  Thanks for the comments!

If it helps any, I've got all of the balls in question. I actually drilled the Tour tonight based on the ridiculous number of people who loved the ball. I was lucky enough to be able to get a NIB one.

Anyway, here's what might help. I have the tour and the sting drilled almost identically. I bowl on 41 foot house shot on the heavy side of medium volume wise. To be honest, I was shocked how good the Tour rolled. That being said, the Sting is very close. It is stronger overall, about 2 and 1 for me, with a bit longer roll and much more significant move off the dry. The two would actually make a pretty good 1-2 punch for me.

All that being said, I think a good option here might be the Revolt. Very similar type of roll and reaction to the Tour. Slightly more angular, but only slightly. Overall strength for me is similar, but the Revolt is stronger, again, 2 and 1, maybe 3 and 1 or 2. If you're comfortable with the reaction shape of the Tour, I personally think the Revolt would be the best option. Phenomenal ball. Something to consider.

Matt

Awesome.  I was worried the Revolt might be too much ball, but it still looks like it clears the heads really easily.  If anything, I have a tendency to help the Tour too much, so something I can project with a bit more confidence might work, but as far as shapes go, I like the Revolt better than the Sting, but they're both so good!  I also need to start thinking about lefty balls too to be ready for next season . .

The Revolt is a very verstile ball.  I can use it whether the lanes are freash or beaten up after league.

Might have been 775 with a revolt. Someone's gotta play devil's advocate :)

Realistically though, I do understand why you like the tour. I was able to throw it a little more last night and it is awesome. Reliable, consistent roll and hits like a ton of bricks. That being said, I would describe the Revolt the same way.

Lol it would have been 780 if I hadn't left the big 4 first ball of the 10th the first game . . but yeah I've been looking at the Revolt hard too.  Despite my success, I'm trying to reign in the righty stuff.  I think this time next year I could be better lefthanded, and that's where I want to start devoting the resources for now.  Lol it's hard to argue with shooting 750s every week, but my right shoulder isn't good for much more than 3 games, so league is working out, but I'm not sure how longer format tournaments are going to go.  Might drill a Revolt lefty!

Drilling it lefty is the perfect solution! On a side note, do you throw the same weight left handed as right? Just curious.

Oh and the revolt probably would have crossed over and carried Brooklyn for ya on that first ball in the 10th. Lol.

Haha . . yeah I use the same weight.  Here's a video, I'd take some ball suggestions lefty too:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUg-OPAICSk
