Title: Finally giving Motiv a test.
Post by: Nmpdx on August 03, 2017, 03:21:58 AM
Hey all. I have been a storm freak for the past few years but Motiv has really caught my eye and grown on me. I finally got the opportunity to pick up some used balls and they are on their way to me now. Got Venom Shock and Panic. The Shock has about 25 games and the Panic about 15. Should I have them resurfaced when they get here? I have heard great things about the lifespan of Motiv but thought I'd ask. Also what should I really expect with these two. I kinda have an idea with me being a higher speed lower rev play but wanted to get some input. I picked up 16#s to hopefully slow my speed down some.

TIA

The Venom Shock is a great ball to play on fresh.  It has control and plenty of strength to take advantage of most medium conditions.  The surface also takes well to adjustments and is consistent in its reaction to changes.

The Panic has similar strength (may even be a bit weaker) but gets through the heads better than the Shock and would make a good transition ball for when the Shock is too early.

I would lean to keeping the Shock a little less than OOB for someone with low revs and high speed.  Just make sure you don't go too low because the ball can be early.  The Panic I would keep polished (maybe experiment with the underlying grit for your style) to try and keep the separation between the two enough.

The Venom Shock is a great ball and I am confident you will enjoy it.  Unfortunately the Panic was hit/miss with many, but can be a good step down for the Shock for a typical league environment.  People expected Storm-like reaction shape, but Motiv just doesn't do that.  Motiv's "skid/snap" reaction is more rounded than Storm.  And to be honest, I feel more people need that type of reaction.  The Panic just didn't look the way they wanted it to look, thus they didn't like it.

i LOVE my shock! i forget the exact numbers, but i remember it's 5 inch pin/pap. makes it pin over middle finger, and it's the perfect benchmark ball. cant say enough good things about this ball! it even makes my bad shots look good! lol never threw the panic. but i agree if i remember correctly the shock is finished at 4000 abralon(motiv's weird factory finish thing makes me laugh) id probably go 2000 if ur speed dominant

The Venom Shock is one of the better balls to have been made. By anyone, not just Motiv. The Venom Panic? Not so much. A better option is the Venom Cobra for something polished.

Totally agree, but I was under the impression he already got the Panic.  Make the best of it, may like it.

True, the Panic wasn't a total t*rd for everyone.  ;D Maybe it will work in this case.

I know a couple of people locally who like theirs, so it's not all bad.

I'm looking forward to giving them a test. I got them as a package deal so I couldn't pass up. Figured it would be a good ball down. I'll let you know next week after I throw them. Thanks for all the opinions. What would be another ball to add to the arsenal.

Something to handle a bit more oil - Forza GT(if you can find one) or the Chronic Paranoia
...or a lot more oil - Jackal Ghost
...or more oil with a good down lane move off friction - United Revolt

Motiv is a VERY impressive line. I threw the original Jackal right up until it got banned. :(I was impressed with the ball motion, which is why I will compare the Chronic Paranoia and Forza SS and Venom Shock to the Dare Devil Trick, IQ Tour, and the Torrent before I drill a new benchmark for the season. Oh, I love choices, lol:)

I would wait till you really understand what you have now and how it works on what you bowl on normally.  You may or may not like either ball and want something to replace them.  Or they may be too strong or weak; too early or too late.  Lots to know before making the decision.
