MOTIV Freestyle Video Review
« on: May 14, 2016, 09:52:25 AM »

Description: The Freestyle is MOTIV’s newest release in the entry level category. In fact it will be replacing the long lasting Ascent and Ascent Apex line. It will utilize the proven Recon Core, but with the new Turmoil LFP (Low Friction Pearl) Coverstock. This Turmoil Cover is a modified version of the same coverstock used on the famous Venom Shock. You also have two choices in color, pink & black or blue & black.

Reaction: The Freestyle will be in play when you want a ball that can get down the lane and never have to worry about it reading too early. As far as shape goes, it’s very controllable and although it’s very continuous it never changes directions too fast, which makes it ideal on patterns that just flat out hook. In my first few sessions I tried using it in league on a typical house shot and I was surprised how straight I was able to play in the track area, but was even more impressed that the ball still got through the pins very well. Although it does fit in the entry level category, remember it uses a modified cover of the Venom Shock.  Giving it a stronger layout or just adding a little surface can make this ball more useable than just on drier conditions too. So far a little surface on my pin down one has made it a very good option on league conditions.

Comparisons: To give you some comparisons the Graffiti Tag is overall stronger and also responds to friction much faster. When the Tag is just too much ball or just too strong down lane the Freestyle is an ideal fit. Now compared to the Ascent Apex the Freestyle is a little longer, but not much, and isn’t quite as even throughout the lane. The Freestyle provides better continuation than the Ascent Apex, but in terms of total hook they are very close.  I think the Freestyle is an upgraded version of the Ascent or Ascent Apex line. Once again, because of the similar cover that it shares with the Venom Shock, this will be a nice piece for when a Venom Shock is too strong as they have similar overall motions.

Summary: I would recommend the Freestyle to anyone who is looking to purchase a quality ball at a very affordable price.  An entry level ball is an important utility piece to have and you’ll never know when you need it.

I like your vids Mike in that you are more the norm as far as bowling stats. and the majority of staffers are high rev and the majority of average bowlers can not relate to that kind of a game.

IMO Motiv needs to add a lady staffer that does vids for their products ie. lady like Storm/RG has in Christina Hardee.  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2Nda6DMsWzMCUAvnio1I1w

Also it's s shame that MattyG is not doing Motiv products any longer on bowlerx as he he is also much like you Mike in the stat. area.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_AEtV9Yo4c

Thanks for the video Mags! Always appreciated.

And by the way, I used my Venom Cobra for the first time this weekend and your review was dead on for that ball.

They did have a female on staff, Angela Wilt.  Don't know what happened but she's on the BIG B staff now.

I remember that but JMO distaff staffers need a bit different stats. to show various bowlers how equipment may react for them understanding that house lane condtions make every ball look good.  That is why MattyG was so good for Motiv as he changed his technique showing various parts of the lane to showcase Motiv's equipment.  He was the best bar none for the average bowler.

I like Justin Wyman's vids but I can not relate to 400+ rev rate.  Motiv and all companies need  more 275 to 325 rev staffers to be able to relate to the majority of house hacks.  JMO.

I do agree Scott.  My wife had intended to do videos for Motiv when she was on staff, but having kids put a damper on that.  She would have been a good representative with about 275-300 RPM and 16+ mph.

There are a lot of us "Old Farts" who cannot relate to bowlers with 300-400+ rev rate playing so deep that it is only a 'dream" for us how they play the lanes.  Yet, most of us "oldster" have the money to buy equipment, but cannot made an "informed  decision" relative to the way we bowl (stroker up the 10 board).  I personally always try to find really good woman  bowler who probably resemble me to help make a bowling ball purchase decision.
Not against the cranker or high rev tweeners, but I would like to see more videos showing solid strokers to see how the balls react.
Thanks for listensing.

Check out Motiv videos posted by ROK (Real Old Kegler) on Youtube. He rolls the ball like a lot of us ''regular'' bowlers.

You do a really good job on your video reviews Mike. The comparisons to other balls is probably my favorite part, and as I start getting into Motiv products they will play a big part in my arsenal building decisions. Luckily for me your style and mine are similar enough so I can feel good about what I'm seeing in your videos.

Which of the two layouts you had for the Freestyle would you use for the burned lanes? I have a Shout that's probably getting replaced soon with something very similar to the second one but I'm wondering if a more even shape would be benefit me more.
