Title: Is Octane pearl or hybrid?
Post by: johnkim on January 31, 2016, 09:09:57 PM
The hybrid black and purple pearl cover on the Octaneâ„¢ is the new Agilityâ„¢ SFX (Skid Flip Xtreme).

According to BTM, octane is listed as pearl cover instead of hybrid.
However many motiv staffs said it was hybrid.

It's definitely a hybrid cover.

The hybrid black and purple pearl cover on the Octaneâ„¢ is the new Agilityâ„¢ SFX (Skid Flip Xtreme) Reactive formulation. This new technology provides outstanding length and an absolutely explosive backend reaction. Factory finish is 5000 Grit LSS (Laser Scan/Polished).

It is a pearl but if you want to believe is a hybrid, be my guest.

Original Octane is hybrid. Brett Spangler talked about it when it came out and I know someone on Motiv staff who also reaffirmed that it's a hybrid cover

Does it matter what the cover is? Hybrid or pearl, it is a skid flip ball for the mass majority. I believe it is a Hybrid that is dominated by Pearl additives considering the ball is mainly purple (pearl). All the ones I've had or drilled look like a 3-1 ratio. The ball is a hybrid by definition and does exactly what it is supposed too. Skid flip.

Mine looked hybrid and was not skid/flip,doubt motiv knows what skid/flip is.

The colors have no bearing on the ratio or anything else.  All colors of the ball are the same except for color.  Hybrid balls are marketing success stories.

Solid reactive balls have no pearl additive (mica or whatever).  Pearl balls will be a solid reactive cover with pearl additive.  Hybrid is simply a solid cover ball with less pearl additive so it would fall somewhere in between reaction wise.

Ultimately, it shouldn't matter what the coverstock is (pearl, solid or hybrid).  What should matter is the manufacturer's intent on what the ball should do.

a Manufacturer Tour rep told me that pearls and such are added to the color. So if you have a solid black and pearl purple mix, that creates the "hybrid" cover. The vast majority of Octane's that I've seen are mainly Purple with black here and there. Which is what I meant when I said 3 to 1. The balls are 75% purple. With purple being the pearl portion, the balls reacts more so like a pearl, than your average 50/50 mix hybrid. Marketing or not, just what I was told by a Tour rep that can be seen on TV weekly, if his brand makes the show.

Has anyone ever seen a solid color ball, free of swirls, be considered a pearl? What I mean by this is, compare the Covert Revolt to the Primal Rage. Or has anyone ever seen a single colored hybrid? Zero color mix and swirls.

Not according to the Motiv site.

Also want to add that "hybrid" doesn't necessarily mean a mix of Pearl and Solid. It just means more than one type of cover stock was used. It could be two different solids or two different pearls, or even more than two.

tkkshop,

I understand what you are saying.  And on the outside, it would seem to make sense.  However, how does a manufacturer provide consistency if there is no control over the final product that ends up in the customer's hands?  (inconsistency of swirl patterns)

If the costumer drills and rolls over a specific part of the ball, how does the manufacturer guarantee they are seeing the right type of reaction the manufacturer designed?

A prime example was the Storm Frantic with the orange and green colors.  Many of the Frantics were two big globs, one orange and one green.  Storm wouldn't be able to guarantee consistency between balls unless each color was the same material.  Saying each color is different is the same as saying you can drill a Frantic to be a Furious or a Fast or somewhere in between, all in one ball.  But in reality, regardless of which part of the ball you roll over, you saw the same reaction.

Not necessarily spmc. It could explain why some of us see different reactions with every ball we drill duplicates of. How many of you have drilled 2 exact balls the same and had them roll the same? I haven't seen 2 balls roll exactly the same. Different batches, swirls, pads, mica loads and the list goes on as to why each ball rolls a little different. I'm just passing on the info a one Chuckie G gave me. Phil C will tell you differently though. I don't think any of us really know the correct answer as the ball designers aren't telling anytime soon.

It's a hybrid, but it really doesn't matter. Reaction matters. It's a long, angular cover.
