Motiv Trident video and written review with ball comparisons!
« on: August 14, 2016, 04:06:28 PM »

Hi guys! Here is my third review so far and this time I was lucky enough to get my hands on the new Trident, the new asymmetrical ball for heavy oil made by Motiv.

Usually Asymmetrical balls are kind of a hit or miss for me. Some of them roll great for me (Hyper Cell Skid, Cruel Intent, Nirvana) and some others hasn't been what I was expecting from them, sometimes they start too early for me and they hit the pins with almost no energy.

I was kind of worried when I read that it was the strongest ball ever produced by Motiv, thinking that it was gonna be too strong to be usable on a wider variety of patterns and that it was gonna be more of a condition specific ball for me. (flatter patterns, heavy oil, etc) Well, I was wrong.

I've been using the Trident for almost two weeks now and I am still impressed of how this ball retains so much energy even with my low tilt and using it on a THS. I have used it in leagues and so far I had a 297 (Yes, I choked lol) and a 279 (another 7 pin ruins it for me) and I also have been able to use it the whole night just moving a couple of boards. I am a lefty, so that might help too, but I have had other balls that after one game and a half I need to ball down, until now, not with the Trident.

Since I am a low rev bowler, my confort zone usually is playing between 10-12 and my breakpoint usually is 7-8, with the Trident I am able to play that part of the lane reserved for the big shots who can play inside 15. This is the first time that I can play that part of the lane and have the ball come back to the pocket without leaving corner pins! A lot of bowlers can do that with a lot of balls, but for me this was a first and I was so happy to finally being able to play that far right!

The ball is a little bit more clean than the Forza GT and a little bit earlier than the original Jackal, having more hook potential than both. I would describe it as if the Vengeance and the Carnage had a kid. The Vengeance is one of my favorite balls because it has this motion that is not early, not late, has a great backend motion without being too angular or uncontrollable and the Carnage was smooth and had a big hook potential, you get those two together, and you have a Trident.

The ball hooks A LOT but not too early making it hit like a wet noodle and it has a great backend motion but it is not angular or unpredictable.

I also used it on the Dead man's curve (43') and honestly I felt like I was playing on a modified house shot. I was able to play 10 to 8 and the ball was just coming back strong to the pocket. I was even able to swing the ball some and the ball rolled great. I used the GT too and while I had a good look with it, I had to be more accurate and play tighter to hit the pocket.

I am gonna keep using it now that the fall league is about to start on the two houses I've been bowling this summer, both are synthetics, both have THS, one is 39' and the other one is 41', plus I am gonna start bowling a league on wood lanes and I am gonna try it there as well so I can let you know how it works on different environments.

So far I am really impressed on how this ball rolls, it is really, really strong, but thankfully it seems to be a versatile ball too!

I hope this review has been helpful to you guys. Good luck for all of you now in this new upcoming season! Please let me know what you think and what can I do better to make better reviews. Every comment is appreciated!

Trident Review

 Ball Specs:
 Motiv Trident
 HVH – High Volume Hybrid
 3000 Grit LSS
 Asymmetric Core
 Layout 45 x 3-7/8 x 40

 Bowler Specs:
Right Hand.  PAP  4-3/4 Over 1/4 Up
 Rev Rate 250. Tilt 20. Rotation 50.
 Speed off hand  18

 Review:
The Trident fills a big hook slot in the Motiv line. It is also the only current Asymmetric ball at this time in the line by Motiv.  The Trident is 3000 Laser Scan Sanded out of the box, but can be roughed up easily for more hook. The Trident also polishes nicely which gives it a strong reaction even with a shined finish.  The Trident has a High Volume Hybrid cover known as HVH.  I feel this cover is what creates most of the hook potential of this ball. I had the opportunity to see this ball used by many styles at a recent Trade Show and it worked well for everyone. The ball picks up in the midlane very well but still maintains backend energy for such a strong ball. The Trident also uses a new asymmetric core known as Turbulent. The combination of the new Trident core and cover make reading heavy oil very easy. The Trident seems to keep the pins low at impact.  The Trident is definitely the most hooking Motiv ball I have used. Although the Trident isn’t replacing anything in the recent Motiv line by having its own characteristics, the Trident reminds me of the retired Talon but with more raw power. You will need oil to use this ball or be very speed dominate.  I would suggest weaker layouts to help the Trident get down the lane on most conditions. If you bowl on flat wet shots then have no fear drilling it stronger. The Trident will not quit. I have tested The Tridents dull, but on a house shot the polished surface works better. On sport I can trust the box surface to bite early and punch the pocket with predictability.  I have a few heavy oil tournaments coming up and I will be more confident with the Tridents in my bag. We all know big hook balls sell well and the Trident will be no different.

Summary:
The Trident Features new big hook core and cover design.
This Asymmetric ball is a good fit for most styles on oil.
The Trident rolls heavy and is predictable.
The Trident polishes well which makes it more versatile.
The HVH is a very strong cover.

LOL! Thanks for your comments. Yes, I really like how this ball rolls, I am surprised on how much I can use this ball without losing carry or energy... Being a lefty helps me staying in the same part of the lane too but so far I am really really happy with this ball.

Nice job.  Keep up the reviews!

Thanks! Hopefully the next one will be out soon!

Well done.

I have the GT and was thinking the same thing, so Indecided to get the Trident.

I do have that Jackal LE coming as well, but it seems to be the solid component of the Trident"s cover stock. Rather have a Hy dried for league.

Yeah, it looks like the LE is gonna have the solid version of the Coercion coverstock, which will probably result in a smoother, earlier piece compared to the Trident, probably gonna be something more similar to the Carnage, but we have to wait and see.

Why are you undecided? Do you have something in your arsenal similar to the Trident?
