Title: Octane - Surface
Post by: Sikxer on July 17, 2014, 08:46:19 AM
Wondering how well the Octane takes surface adjustments?
I'm looking at something for a step under my Hyper Cell. My critical theory has a ton of games on it. The Sinister was a thought, but I'm really more interested in the Octane after watching some videos.

Would an Octane fit the bill, possibly with a surface adjustment and/or strong drilling?

Possible line-up for fall:
Hyper Cell (2) - 4x4x1 & 4x4x2
Octane  (Med-Hvy, strong backend)
Reax (Med-Hvy, smooth backend)
Venom Shock (Med, Continuous)
Wrecker (Med, early smooth)
Hyroad Pearl (Med, strong backend)
IQ Pearl (Med-light, control)
Venom Toxin - Motion hole (Med-light, flip)
Red Backlash - (light)

Some slight overlap there, but I do bowl a lot of tournaments.
Thanks for any feedback..

It seems to me you need a Revolt in that slot instead of the Octane. It has plenty of back end snap.

yeah, you may be right Milo.  Revolt certainly looks more the part. Just looking for that strong pearl look. So the Revolt can be fairly strong off the spot?

Mine makes a pretty hard turn even with the box finish. Not like the Primal Rage, but it's still moves a lot when it hits dry. If you are looking for a strong peal that can handle oil, check out the Cruel Intent. It really takes a sharp turn down lane.

Maybe even a Sigma Sting....

From what I have seen, the Hyper Cell is early and very strong.  The Octane would be a pretty big jump in ball shape since it is pretty angular and so is the Primal Rage.  The Revolt may be what you want, as long as you are looking for the same shape.  If you are looking for something to use after the Hyper Cell is too much, then perhaps the Sigma Sting is a better option.  Early revving core with a sanded pearl cover.

That thought crossed my mind as well. The Sting is a great option with a cover adjustment.

I'd look at the Primal Rage or Covert Revolt if you want something that's a step below the Hyper Cell.  But, a Sigma Sting could potentially fit here also with either a surface adjustment or stronger layout.  I see the Octane being a compliment more to the Sigma Sting once the lanes burn up a little.

What makes these types of recommendations difficult is each bowler behaves to ball reaction differently.  Some want an arsenal for league (maybe 3 balls) and some want an arsenal for tournaments (maybe 8+ balls).  Some might want two of the same balls drilled differently as their step down while others might want "high" performance, "medium" performance and "low" performance as their pieces.

Then you have coverstocks.  Do you go solid, hybrid then pearl.  Or do you go solid straight to pearl.  The combinations are endless.  Without knowing how the lanes are breaking down or the comfort level of the bowler and his style, a good recommendation is difficult.

Thanks for all the input guys..  After getting to see some Revolts in action this weekend, I'll probably pick one up. Looks like a good fit.

The Revolt would be a good choice. It would be like the same type of shape like a Marvel S.
