Title: Question About The MOTIV Ascent
Post by: Brickguy221 on December 22, 2013, 12:04:57 PM
In looking at the MOTIV web site and viewing the 3 different colored Ascent balls, the specs all seem to appear to be the same. Are these 3 balls all the same with the only difference being the color?

I got a Pink/Purple and love it..  Also have the Red/Blue Solid..  After I put a ton of polish on it had a 300 and then an 800 a few weeks after..  HAve not really used it since the 800 though..

....so to sum it up, no matter ball I might choose if I decide to buy one, it will react and do the same thing on the lane exactly the same as the other 2 colors, is that correct?

Reason for my question is because I now have the Primal Scream and Thrash Frenzy. Because of the weather, I haven't tried the Frenzy yet, but with the Scream, picking up the 10 pin is killing me. If I do no better with the Frenzy, I will have to purchase a plastic or polyester or something similar. In my former lineup of balls before I was forced to drop in ball weight because of medical reasons/problems, I used a Lane 1 Red XXXL for the 10 pin and liked it because I could throw it straight or I could hook it a wee bit when needed. Thus my interest in the MOTIV Ascent balls.

You're correct. Any color you get (unless you get the ascent solid, which is discontinued) it will react the same.

I suspect not:
As far as the BTM AND the BJI reviews of the new Red/Black and the Purple/Green Ascent Pearls are concerned.

Both reviews said the Red/Black ball hooked earlier and more than the Purple/Green version. While the difference wasn't huge, it seemed to be significant enough for BTM to publish 2 different graphs, one for each ball.

I am not sure the difference is enough to make a difference if you choose one for just 10 pins. I think you will see a bigger difference, the slower your ball speed and less difference, the higher your ball speed. In any case, there seems to be enough of a difference for both reviews to mention it specifically. Neither of them make any reference to many other balls when they test different colors of the same ball.

Brick, any one of the Ascents is going to hook more than the XXXL. Certainly less than the Frenzy, but they are reactive and will chage direction when they encounter friction.

Steven is correct way more hook than an XXXL.  I use a a Sniper for spares Crosshairs on my PAP which is a negative weight drilling.

If you are looking for a light-medium ball under the Thrash Frenzy I'd wait until Motiv uses the Halogen core again in a solid cover to replace the Ascent Solid.  I would think that would be upcoming in the next few releases.  BTW....Ascent MOTIVator-Z Reactive cover is a bit stronger than some would think.  I have a Pink-Purple Ascent Pearl 2 5/8" pin VLS type layout P2000 still gets length surface cuts down backend flip that is a good light ball but it's relatively strong even with a weak layout.

Thanks for the information guys. It helps, really does, and I appreciate it.

On my ball speed, it has picked up some as well as my revs a bit also since I am now throwing 12# balls. Not sure at the moment just how much though.

I am wondering if the Sniper will hook at all, does anyone know?

I posted a pic above so I guess I would know.   :o

Basically no less hook than the XXXL because it has Hollow Point core is less dynamic..  Now you can buy a cheaper poly ball but I choose the DMX poly for 2 reasons.  It's made in the USA and the majority of poly ball are not..  2nd I have had 2 poly balls crack in the past few years a Legends Arrow and a Golden Globe.  These kinds of poly are very brittle and seem to crack easier than any.  The DMX poly seems less brittle or resilient if you will.  I have used it over a year and keep it at 1500 dull.  The negative drill gets it in an easy roll and lays off.  I use my normal release it goes dead straight so mine the way it's laid out is poor for a dry lane ball.  I would lay out slightly positive for a dry lane ball and maybe you could get a few boards hook but that wasn't my intention with my spare ball usage.  Of the higher dollar spare balls I'd rate it up there for spare use.  Pic is above......kind of neat going down the lane when the cross hairs roll up on your PAP.

Thanks for the information Scott. I can handle a wee bit of hook on the 6's and 10's, but just can't handle the sharp left turn the Primal Scream makes on them. I also liked my Red XXXL when shooting the 3-10 leave. Sounds like the Sniper drilled on the strong side and "maybe" dulled a bit might do what I am looking for. I will wait and see after I try my Thrash Frenzy. Again thanks or the info.

My Sniper is drilled straight up 0/0 and it goes dead straight no matter what release I use even on high friction lanes
