Title: thoughts on this for a 3 ball arsenal for next season
Post by: lsf_21 on April 26, 2015, 10:33:46 AM
So I injured my arm last year and we deemed the issue to be a bad fit. So since everything I have is 3 years + old I have been given the okay to get me a new 3 ball arsenal for next year.

About me. I am a more rev dominant player. Video of me tossing the recon. It is old but still pretty similar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLm7AT5wp4o

But here is what I am looking to do for my 3 ball arsenal for next year.

Heavy- Revolt vengence or covert revolt.

Medium- Forza. this ball is already purchased and punched up with a new span. Rolls amazingly and performs great in this spot

Light- Tag- I am looking to use this to replace the recon which is my go to ball and can be used on a wide range of shots for me.

Thoughts? I am thinking about putting the same drilling on all 3 as I love the way it rolls for me.

I would suggest the Forza for heavy, Venom Shock for medium and the Tag for light. But this is based on you seeing conditions that would require the Forza.

Based on the way you bowl you wouldn't really need the Forza on 99% of league patterns. If you are bowling tournaments then sure.

If you don't see real heavy conditions then I could see the Venom Shock as your "heaviest" ball. Then the Panic/Tag below that then an original Ascent Pearl.

Yeah. I am hoping to bowl in some tournaments this upcoming year but not really sure how much oil I will see in them.

Might end up getting a Tag and waiting for the new urethane ball.

What ever you do, Get a Tag!

I am thinking the tag will be my next purchase. Which will be before winter league starts.

What ever you do, Get a Tag!

You know....I am a late comer to the Sting and just love how that rolls for me.  I want to throw that on anything.  Bought a Panic as a step down from that, as I thought the Shock would be too strong as a step "down"...and have really struggled with it.   I then saw a friend throw his Tag, and after seeing it make him look like (name your favorite PBA bowler here)....I could not get to the pro shop fast enough.  So I picked up my Tag on Thurs and first night of league play with it on Fri I went 258, 233,246!!!  Then at the end of a practice session I threw a couple games for score and shot 268, 255!!  I have a pin down layout on this one, but if I can offload my Panic, I may have to buy another one and make that a pin up.  I bet these 2 alone would make a great 1,2 punch for most THS!!

I did the same. I wasn't thrilled with panic and now have 2 Tags. I shot 749 with pin one Friday and 702 Saturday with the other. I now have 5 sets with them. 702,785,670,749 and 702 again. It's not like im a 230 avg guy.  They are great. One at 4000 and one polished. Could be the best ths combo I've ever had.

I have wanted a forza since it released. Had the money to purchase and did.

I don't see an issue with the arsenal. Once you get all of the pieces how you like them (i.e. drilled and coverstock prep) you will see where you need to make adjustments and what balls you may need to swap out.

I think the biggest thing I may need to add would be something under the tag. Not sure I need/would go as weak as the rebel tank. But maybe an ascent drilled weak.

Before you buy something else though I would go with what you got. The Tag might be enough, or you'll find out that some of the balls are stronger than expected and may overlap. Part of the fun is making adjustments.

Yeah. Currently I throw a recon and a primal impulse. The PI is weaker for me than the recon. Makes sense.

The Primal Impulse was an odd ball.  Suppose to be skid/flip but developed before the renaissance of Motiv so the cover was a little lacking.

I see you throwing the Orange Recon in the video and that ball is very urethane-like in its reaction.  Even the Ascent will be a bit stronger than the OG Recon.

I think the Tag will be very close to the Panic for your style so I feel having both will have a bit of overlap.  I agree with what EL3MCNEIL stated, I would get one piece at a time unless there is a financial reason for doing otherwise.  I really feel for your style, the Venom Shock will be a phenomenal ball for a multitude of conditions.  After that, you can make additions as needed.

And after seeing the Rebel Tank, it has the potential to be a good ball for someone who is significantly rev-dominant and wants to stay in the dirt.  Good looking ball with DMX pearl urethane and the Halogen core.

Thanks for the response. The recon for me has been a go to for awhile. The ball rolls awesome on a lot of conditions.

I really do like the look of the venom shock. I would just be worried of a lot of overlap between it and the tag for me.

I think the forza after throwing it could end up being my heavier oil ball.

I believe strength-wise, the Tag will be a little weaker than the Venom Shock, but the shapes each provide are very different.  There will be plenty of fresher conditions where the Shock will provide a significantly better look than the Tag.  And when it comes to flatter conditions, the control at the breakpoint the Shock provides (compared to the Tag) will be very beneficial.

I personally wouldn't worry about overlap between the Shock and the Tag unless all you will ever see is the exact same THS every week and nothing else.  A lot of balls can be made to look the same on THS.

For sure.

Any idea the difference between the shock and toxin?

The Toxin and the Shock share the same spot in the line-up, but at different times in Motiv's history.  Motiv had great cores early on but their covers could not compete with the Storms/EBI/Brunswick covers at the time.  Consequently, the complete lineup was a little weaker overall when compared to other companies complete lineup.

The Toxin is a great ball with a shape similar to the Venom Shock, but the Venom Shock cover is stronger and the ball in general is more predictable with the Turmoil MFS coverstock.  This is especially apparent on flatter shots.

In the current Motiv lineup, the Toxin would fit in a space between the Shock and the original Ascent in strength.  In fact, I feel Motiv needs a ball similar to the solid Ascent it used to have.  But that is a different story.

I gotcha. I have a toxin hanging out on my current bag that doesn't get thrown much. I can't carry with it to save my life so looking to Redrill it.
