Title: Wanting To Get MOTIVated
Post by: toneoak1 on October 10, 2014, 10:29:59 PM
I'm left handed with a high track, ball speed of about 16.5, and more revs than most left-handers. I have been looking at redoing my whole arsenal with motiv balls, especially after a recent demo day I went to. I love the continuation through the pins and the variety of shot shapes offered. I have a good dry lanes ball so I will not be looking into true dry lanes balls yet. This is what I'm thinking (and this is where I need help) I'm thinking an original tribal for when the pattern is walled up. A venom shock to play straighter with strong roll on the flatter and longer patterns where keeping the pocket is key; and an Octane for when I need HOOK. I don't match up well with asymmetric equipment (never had good results with them even when experimenting with different layouts.) so the Jackal is out much to my dismay. Any suggestions?

The Covert Revolt can handle oil and a nice step down from it would be the Primal Rage.

Just my opinion, but you are missing out if you pass on the Sigma Sting. It's a superb benchmark ball.

+1.  The Covert Revolt is a nice ball that is smooth but very continuous in back.  Think of it being similar in motion to the Game Breaker/Game Breaker 2 with the low diff core.  It's a great ball to chase the oil in with and I love throwing it on the fresh.  The Primal Rage is a great step down as it will allow you to open up the angles more.  Plus, the Fusion Pearl cover is one of the better pearl covers that has come out in a while.

As for the Sigma Sting, once I bought that, I was hooked on Motiv.  That ball is the definition of benchmark.  I've said it before on a few other posts but IMO it's 1 of the top 3 I have ever thrown personally.  I haven't seen a ball that good in a really long time.

I agree. Put your favorite layout on a sigma sting. Don't see how you'll be disappointed. Agree on the revolt too. Haven't drilled one for myself yet but it'll be my next motiv because of what I've seen of it.

For a league bowlers first venture into Motiv, you cannot go wrong with the Sigma Sting...It's what dreams are made of....

I'm the only one I've seen throwing one in my area. See more of the rage or revolt. They both look good as well but i think the sigma sting might be the ultimate THS ball for me. Over the last 3 years working in a pro shop I've probably averaged drilling myself at least 12 balls a year. I haven't drilled myself anything since drilling the sigma sting and i drilled it late February. I had drilled an Uproar right before drilling the sting. I put about 10 games on the Uproar and just sold it last week. Outside of those 10 games I've only thrown the Sting. I am planning on drilling a couple balls soon for tournament season (maybe even another sting), but i really don't need anything else for league.....

I have not seen any Stings out in our area.  How does the reaction compare to say an Octane or Shock.  I'm Looking to build a three ball arsenal with as little overlap as possible.  I'm kind of hooked on the Octane after throwing it at a demo day.  What two would you recommend for a good start to a tournament arsenal?

Having a Sting, it will be a little earlier and less angular than the Octane.  The Octane in Motiv's medium ball lineup is going to be the true skid/snap motion and it is slightly weaker than the Sting.

The Shock is designed to be smooth throughout and therefore isn't going to be as angular as the other 2 balls.  It does have the same hook rating of 50 as the Octane.

If I were building a 3 ball arsenal, I would go:
1) Covert Revolt (a versatile medium-heavy solid, smooth and handles some volume)
2) Sigma Sting (great benchmark ball, versatile on a huge variety of medium patterns)
3) Tribal or Octane (just depends on the motion you're looking for- Octane is slightly stronger than the Tribal)

Those 3 balls will handle probably about 90% of what you'd see on tournament patterns.

do

I agree except if you want something more on the weaker side you might want to swap out the tribal/octane with a apex accent.

I am high speed (19-20) and low rev (200-250) bowler, always on THS with medium oil.  Would my ball speed be too much for the Sigma Sting?  It was suggested to me to stay away from Pearl coverstocks.  I have some experience with the Venom Toxin and really liked it on lighter oil.  It looks like I will be limited to just one ball for next year, buying after New Years, and from people's comments it sounds like the Sigma Sting is a 'sure thing' ball to purchase.

It's a pretty strong cover for a pearl withsurface it's too much cover for me on a house shot but I'm fairly matched speed and rev rate these days....if you're seeing medium oil i think you'll do just fine with a sigma sting. It's not a skid flip type pearl.
