Arlington Lanes High Roller Scratch Tournament summer '10
« on: August 17, 2009, 06:02:41 AM »
Arlington Lanes (Arlington Heights, IL) will be holding it's first High Roller Scratch Tournament  in the early summer of 2010.  The tournament is just an idea on paper as of the moment, but there is strong support amongst local scratch bowlers to get this up and going.  All we need to make this a reality is bowler interest.

There is little set in stone, so the decision process will be very democratic.  The format will be decided by the people for the people.  If you have any ideas for the format, entry fee, prize money breakdown, etc, speak up and have your voice be heard.

These are the guidelines we have thus far:

- Open to both men and women
- Open to PBA regional tour members
- Must be atleast 18 years of age
- No USBC Youth Bowlers permitted
- 2 day tournament (Saturday Qualifying, Sunday Match Play/Championship)

Current topics I'd like discussed in greater detail:

-The official date (what date won't conflict with other large/regional tournaments???)
-How many games of qualifying on Saturday?
-What's a reasonable entry fee?
-Is a new car better than a cash prize for 1st?

to help generate interest and make this tournament a reality we have just created a FACEBOOK GROUP

Once we have enough members this tournament will be able to get off the ground

To Join the facebook group simply follow the link below!!!

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=121873343513

BE SURE TO HELP GET THE WORD OUT, WE NEED AS MANY BOWLERS TO JOIN THE GROUP AS POSSIBLE!![

ENOUGH BOWLERS CAN = A NEW CAR FOR 1ST PLACE

Now let's make this the best tournament we can!

I think a for a SCRATCH tournament you have to lay down a sport pattern.  Possibly a Kegel Sport Series pattern?

I would like a format like this...

SATURDAY
6 games qualifying, cut field in half
6 games qualifying, cut field in half (people who get through this round cash)

SUNDAY
6 games cashers qualifying, cut to top 16.
Top 16 heads up match play.  2 games total score.
Round of 8 heads up match play.  2 games total score.
Round of 4 heads up match play.  2 games total score.
Final 2 heads up match play.  2 games total score.

I think this format will attract bowlers because if they have to spend money on a hotel Saturday night, they know they get a check back.  Another option is 12 games of qualifying on Saturday, and then cut to top 24.  However, I like the early cut because you will be paying less in linage.

I'll most likely be there regaurdless of format =)

Duke's suggestion on the format is something I've seen work very well at Collegiate Masters...the cut after the first six games of qualifying allows you to save on lineage (important as this will add to the prize fund) and the cut to cashers after the second round of qualifying means those spending $$ to stay overnight will get $$ in return the next day.  It's a fair format...not too short, but not too long either.

Andrew's point is very very valid...advertising is the way to go, and the more sponsors the better.  Kudos on devising a tournament so many months in advance.  Gives this a real chance to fly!  I would advocate keeping the entry fee "reasonable"...perhaps $200 or less will still attract the local players.

Best of luck!
