bowling centers in NJ
« on: March 12, 2007, 01:00:34 PM »
What's happening to all the bowling centers in NJ, closing left and right, and where did the bowlers from these centers go to?

For example:
Roosevelt lanes (CLOSED)
Garden State (CLOSED)
Belle Aire (CLOSED)
Parkway (CLOSED)
Strike and Spare (RUMORED TO BE CLOSING)
Carolier (RUMORED TO BE CLOSING)
thats over 200 LANES. And I may have missed some.
All these centers had VERY GOOD PRO SHOPS where did they go?

I'VE BEEN OUT OF THE AREA FOR ABOUT 1 YEAR AND I CAME BACK TO THIS!!!!!

Carolier is probably not closing, but MidState probably is (to be replaced by a Gold's Gym, or so I heard.

Soory, Barry, but,
Basically, property values are so high, that if a corporation leases the land from the owner, they can't pay him/her/it nearly as much as he/she/it would get if a developer bought it and put up a shopping mall.

Strike and Spare (a very old 48 lane house (24 lanes on each side), is theoretically AMF's biggest money maker on the entire East Coast. Yet, the owner was not even going to allow AMF to renew the lease. So far, it's a month to month operation as to whether or not the leagues will be allowed to finish the season. I haven't heard much about it lately nor do I care (it's a real pit, only good for, as far as I am concerned, testing your adaption skills and your release and ball speed changes. The lane bed wood is in the neighborhood of 30 - 40 years old; they were supposed to put in synthetics in 2000 but AMF used the money to put in a new heating and A/C system.)

WOW!! I didn't know about Mid-State, it's really sad to see all these centers close. Do you know about the others and where the pro shop operators went to?

Are you serious?  Carolier in trouble?  Dang, have to travel 200 miles to bowl!  Same situation here in NYC

That really sucks! I grew up some 15-16 years ago bowling at Midstate and Carolier! I only bowled there for about 2 yrs as a junior before moving to Las Vegas. But it is still sad to hear!

No, some of those are more in northern NJ; I stick around the Middlesex, Mercer, and Monmouth areas.

I know Lonce (userid: NextLevelPS) recently (year ago?) moved to a different center.

Ask Krumpy300 and solid9; they are northern NJ bowlers who post here also.

Ironically, I travel an hour and 10 minutes one way to have OJ at Howell Lnaes dirll my ALL balls. He used to run the pro shop at Carolier, but left there in 2000. Tommy and Teata Semiz run the pro shop at Carolier now.

I remember OJ, Teata and Tommy,
but I never heard of anyone named Lonce
you said he moved to a new location
a year ago, I've been out of the loop
for over a year, who is he and where was he before?

I also remember the guy at Roosevelt lanes they said
that he was the best. This was about 3-4 years back,
and if I'm not mistaken he was related to the girl at
Garden State, Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Where are they now that both centers are closed.

Lonce posts here under the userid NextLevelPS (for pro shop). I was looking for him but he hasn't posted here in a few months. He came to a few of our gatherings in NJ of ballreviews people. He moved to a new center form his old one, but I can't recall which center right now.   I'll check with one of our other guys and get back to you.

... Lonce is at HiWay Bowl, on Rt 22 in Union.
(Thanks, Vernon)

Lonce is @ HyWay bowl in Union.  He's been my driller for about a year now.  He moved from Bowlrite lanes in Union City..
At least Parkway Lanes in NJ is upgrading, it is a very needed change.  Now if they could only fix Bowler City.......

Same trend on Staten Island, Colonial, Victory and Bowling on the Green are gone. Unfortunately it's all about the property owners maximizing what they can get per square foot.

Carolier closing down....please thats one the best centers on the east coast.
I hear strike and spare in on its last leg but still may stay around due to a aspestos problem. I hoping my owner does not get up one and just sell the place. yeah I located at the world famous Hy-bowl.

From what I know....Roosevelt bowlers went to Hudson Lanes, Garden State bowlers went to HyWay, Parkway Lanes bowlers went to Lodi and Garden Palace.

The guy who had the shop at Roosevelt aka Kurt Borst (?) may have gone to Hudson as well. Garden State's pro shop staff is now operating at North Arlington Bowl-O-Drome.

And with 3 or 4 leagues from Parkway going to Garden Palace, the amount of adult leagues there (GP) has doubled...thankfully.

Dover Lanes is also closing.....thank god.

It is funny because my wife and I were talking about this the other day as we both bowled at those houses that have closed or are closing in the JBT's.  Not to mention she shot her 800 at Belle Aire.

Ever since Chuck Soos was transferred out by AMF, the only help that Strike and Spare (Rt. 22 in Greenbrook) can use is a 5 gallon can of kerosene and a book of matches!
Wish I had never left Monmouth county.
