Title: bowling centers in NJ
Post by: 20 YRS LATER on March 12, 2007, 01:00:34 PM
What's happening to all the bowling centers in NJ, closing left and right, and where did the bowlers from these centers go to?

For example:
Roosevelt lanes (CLOSED)
Garden State (CLOSED)
Belle Aire (CLOSED)
Parkway (CLOSED)
Strike and Spare (RUMORED TO BE CLOSING)
Carolier (RUMORED TO BE CLOSING)
thats over 200 LANES. And I may have missed some.
All these centers had VERY GOOD PRO SHOPS where did they go?

I'VE BEEN OUT OF THE AREA FOR ABOUT 1 YEAR AND I CAME BACK TO THIS!!!!!

Carolier is probably not closing, but MidState probably is (to be replaced by a Gold's Gym, or so I heard.

Soory, Barry, but,
Basically, property values are so high, that if a corporation leases the land from the owner, they can't pay him/her/it nearly as much as he/she/it would get if a developer bought it and put up a shopping mall.

Strike and Spare (a very old 48 lane house (24 lanes on each side), is theoretically AMF's biggest money maker on the entire East Coast. Yet, the owner was not even going to allow AMF to renew the lease. So far, it's a month to month operation as to whether or not the leagues will be allowed to finish the season. I haven't heard much about it lately nor do I care (it's a real pit, only good for, as far as I am concerned, testing your adaption skills and your release and ball speed changes. The lane bed wood is in the neighborhood of 30 - 40 years old; they were supposed to put in synthetics in 2000 but AMF used the money to put in a new heating and A/C system.)

WOW!! I didn't know about Mid-State, it's really sad to see all these centers close. Do you know about the others and where the pro shop operators went to?

Are you serious?  Carolier in trouble?  Dang, have to travel 200 miles to bowl!  Same situation here in NYC

That really sucks! I grew up some 15-16 years ago bowling at Midstate and Carolier! I only bowled there for about 2 yrs as a junior before moving to Las Vegas. But it is still sad to hear!

No, some of those are more in northern NJ; I stick around the Middlesex, Mercer, and Monmouth areas.

I know Lonce (userid: NextLevelPS) recently (year ago?) moved to a different center.

Ask Krumpy300 and solid9; they are northern NJ bowlers who post here also.

Ironically, I travel an hour and 10 minutes one way to have OJ at Howell Lnaes dirll my ALL balls. He used to run the pro shop at Carolier, but left there in 2000. Tommy and Teata Semiz run the pro shop at Carolier now.

I remember OJ, Teata and Tommy,
but I never heard of anyone named Lonce
you said he moved to a new location
a year ago, I've been out of the loop
for over a year, who is he and where was he before?

I also remember the guy at Roosevelt lanes they said
that he was the best. This was about 3-4 years back,
and if I'm not mistaken he was related to the girl at
Garden State, Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Where are they now that both centers are closed.

Lonce posts here under the userid NextLevelPS (for pro shop). I was looking for him but he hasn't posted here in a few months. He came to a few of our gatherings in NJ of ballreviews people. He moved to a new center form his old one, but I can't recall which center right now.   I'll check with one of our other guys and get back to you.

... Lonce is at HiWay Bowl, on Rt 22 in Union.
(Thanks, Vernon)

Lonce is @ HyWay bowl in Union.  He's been my driller for about a year now.  He moved from Bowlrite lanes in Union City..
At least Parkway Lanes in NJ is upgrading, it is a very needed change.  Now if they could only fix Bowler City.......

Same trend on Staten Island, Colonial, Victory and Bowling on the Green are gone. Unfortunately it's all about the property owners maximizing what they can get per square foot.

From what I know....Roosevelt bowlers went to Hudson Lanes, Garden State bowlers went to HyWay, Parkway Lanes bowlers went to Lodi and Garden Palace.

The guy who had the shop at Roosevelt aka Kurt Borst (?) may have gone to Hudson as well. Garden State's pro shop staff is now operating at North Arlington Bowl-O-Drome.

And with 3 or 4 leagues from Parkway going to Garden Palace, the amount of adult leagues there (GP) has doubled...thankfully.

Dover Lanes is also closing.....thank god.

It is funny because my wife and I were talking about this the other day as we both bowled at those houses that have closed or are closing in the JBT's.  Not to mention she shot her 800 at Belle Aire.

Ever since Chuck Soos was transferred out by AMF, the only help that Strike and Spare (Rt. 22 in Greenbrook) can use is a 5 gallon can of kerosene and a book of matches!

Carolier is not going anywhere. The property owners own enough shopping malls, they don't need the money.

Lonce,

You're only scratching the surface of the problem in that "Corner of Hell"!

I am actually under 190 there. Been over 25 years since I was at that level. Only their Monday night league gets any consideration. Glad I'm not and will never again pay them any money. Only subbing now, trying to learn hand release finesse.

Last several years. God only knows why.

Last year several squads literally had no oil at all. Excuse: somethign wrong with the oil machine.
Duh!

When Chuck Soos was the manager, he had a standing rule: any employee who touched the oil machine's oil was immediately fired. He worked his a** off, fixing the oil machine and making sure every league had the proper oil, no matter what.

AAAhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! Thanks for bringing that nightmare back. I was there one Sunday morning to bowl singles/doubles.  The machine broke - guess who's pair it was on. It took them about an hour to fix it. Ran the whole house and taped it - no good.  They ran it again and said it was OK.  First set I was playing up 5 with my Ultimate Inferno on the right lane and swinging a plastic ball on the left.  At the beginning of the second game the scorekeeper broke and they wouldn't believe us when we told them what we had scored. It went downhill from there. To top off the day, I shot 250 something in the last game and lost 5 brackets and they wouldn't show me the sheets.......   Where's the valium I had left over.

There are currently rumors flying all over the place about where AMF will have the replacement for Strike and Spare (Greenbrook) built. Considering that it's is supposed to be their biggest money maker on the entire East Coast and the  owner is definitely selling the property, this makes sense. Potential sites up and down Rt 22 have bene mentioned.

Jeff,

Here's the latest (only time will tell if these are/come true).

Midstate has re-signed their lease (no Gold's Gym) and will be there for some time.  Yeah! This is one of my favorites houses.

Now on to our favorite place, Strike & Spare (Jeff is correct about your averaging dropping like a lead balloon here (my average is 20 pins less at this house)).  They were looking for space within a few miles each way on Rte 22 to build a new 70+ lane center. Here's the new word on the street.  Landlord has come down on the price of the land and is "throwing" in the property with the trees to the left.  AMF will update the entire place, including new lanes.  They will use the additional property to expand and build another 24 lanes.  Rumor has it that have already ordered new ball returns to replace the non-working ones.  Like I said before, only time will tell if this is true.

Even if it is and we get new lanes, etc we still have to deal with the mindset of catering to the "open bowlers" and not league/serious bowlers.  The conditions will still be horrendous for the leagues, I'm sure.

Somerset county has nothing really.  We have Strike & Spare and Manville.  It's a given that if you want something decent you have to travel out of county.

John,

Regarding Strike and Spare, Maybe that's good news, Maybe not.

I'm not joining one darned (to be polite) new league and giving them a red cent of my money until I see new synthetics AND I see the results of them actually taking care of the lanes. I have suffered too long there, since 1995; I can't tell what bowling there has done to my game.

Right now I am subbing there at th erequest of some friends, but that prevents me from bowling elsewhere that night. I won't be doing that next year.

Even as bad as Carolier is now (no real oil), it's still highly preferable.

Glad Midstate, that is good news. Maybe I can join you in a league next year OR this Summer, if you can stand bowling with me. Even if they oil very lightly, they still oil regularly and they have synthetics.

ALmostguaranteed. I spoke to an AMF manager last night. Closing date is May 5th. Property owner wants $200K per year for the lease and AMF thinks that's too much.

Also heard AMF is buying the property under Strike and Spare and will install another 24 lanes. Time will tell. I still won't give SnS a freaking penny until they install synthetics AND they prove they can take of the lanes AND the customers.

Still like Midstate over SnS in center maintenance and in the way they treat customers.

Carolier is a Brunswick house, does anyone know anything about other
local Brunswick alleys closing?  Such as Woodhaven Lanes, Queens ?

Oh, yea, Greenbrook Lanes. Now I remember it. Across the street from SnS. AT its end it was pretty run down. Last bowled there in 1987 or so, using a pin on axis Black Hammer.

I think Manville is still open. I was there twice, once for the Vargo in 1985 or so, when John Vargo, in his special tournament used 5 lb pins and put out a reverse block. YOu were thrilled to average 150. The pin setters kept dropping the pins, they were so heavy. Last time I went there was when I first moved to Somerset County; it was still one of the most awful places to bowl. In the last 15 years since I have never set foot in the place. People tell me it's still not a nice place to bowl. I think it's called Ten PinLanes.

Sad thing about Mid-State! it wasn't the best but it is not the worst.

I heard through the grapevine that AMF is rumored to open a brand new

center where Garden State Bowl is or was. is there any truth to that?

And as for Carolier I said in my 1st post that it was a rumored to be closing

not that it is closing.

Can't provide any info about Garden State.

Carolier is not closing but will not, as far as I have learned, host the US OPen any more. It's too costly without enough return.

Lee Livingston still owns Carolier, err, "Brunswick Zone at Carlier". AFAIHL, he is leasing the building and property to Brunswick. When the lease is over he still owns it.

Lee is a friend to bowling. Always has been; always will be,

The rumor that has been floating around for a while was that Edison Brunswick is going to become a nightclub for the new inhabitants of the community.

The story I heard was that he only bought the lanes to get the liquor license so he could open a club.

Where did the rumor of Carolier closing come from?  Roosevelt closed because they were leasing the land and they were bought out for potential Condos.  I believe the same thing happened with Garden State.  These houses weren't in the best neighborhoods.  With the increasing prices of the industry today, I don't think you were going to find too many people going to these locations and spending a minimum of $4.00 a game for beat up, outdated equipment.

The Pro Shop from Roosevelt moved over to Hudson Lanes, about 2 miles down the road.

That started 2+ years ago. It died more than a year ago.
The rumor was the high end was going to be sold in order to be made into another strip mall. I kind of doubt that Lee Livingston, the owner, woudl allow that to happen. In fact, I thought I had heard at one point (2 years ago) that he was considering ending the lease to Brunswick (they are leasing the property from him now.) and re-taking ownership of Carolier Lanes. It is now Brunswick Zone at Carolier. In any case, he didn't take it back. Brunswick is still running it.
